Personal Projects / Re: Zelda II Redux

Very nice work. I was trying something similar a long while back, but didn't get too far in. I always thought the tileset was way too simple and was trying my best to spruce things up. Keep it up! I am eager to see how it turns out! Would love to see more visual variety in the temples and such.

After discovering these strange things called "name tables" (nooby, I know...) I went to town and whipped up a new title screen for my Earthbound Zero project, Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition! It's the 2nd title screen I've ever made and boooy is it easier with name tables...

I love it, my only nitpick is the line thickness of the upper half of the "R" is off a bit. Super thumbs up!

This patch probably isn't stack-able with the Modernization hack, is it?

It would be nice if you could see them with e.g. Dracula's eye, but there's no evidence anywhere suggesting that this kind of feature was planned for the game, and thus it falls outside the scope of this project.

It's an awesome idea, however. I would like to request this feature as an optional/separate patch, please.

Dace, fantastic job combining everything. It really does look like the definitive Metroid hack. :)  Hossbags' suggestions would be awesome additions, I second the request if you are up to it. Thanks for sharing mOTHER with us!

OK - then I just need a little help understanding the form for submitting hacks to this site.

Last time I uploaded a hack (Kid Icarus Retold) I obviously did it wrong and got some help from the staff.

Am I supposed to host all the files on another server and then just enter the URL's in the submit form?

Can somebody please give me some detailed instructions how to submit a hack?

/DacE

Yeah, check this page for recommended sites to store the files on, if you need. I recommend using dropbox, however. Insert the url to the file and fill in the rest, and you are good to go. The only other thing that can be tricky is screenshots. Just got to make sure you took them at the right resolution. But please upload this hack! I am eager to check it out!

Holy-moly. If only all these hacks could be combined with MDbtroid (graphic enhancements, not the lua script), you would have the perfect Metroid game. *dreamy sigh*

I had an idea for another addition. I'm not sure how difficult it would be but, since Zero Mission turns the Chozo statues into recharge stations, how about making it so that after you collect the item held by an orb it spawns a new item that fills up all your energy? Not as elegant, but would be a big improvement.

Or maybe after dying, at least.

Wonderful work. Always happy to have more Lolo to play. Your link seems to be pointed to the wrong place tho.

Has her own sprites/palette.

That was still mostly in discussion but we had the idea of giving her extra health with a regular jump.  Though doesn't seem really worth her case considering the others have better stats that benefit for the most part.

You might want to consider something like an "instant super jump". Just press down, and she is charged up instantly. Would make her a choice character for speedruns. Looks good tho!

Well, in that case....

Just for shits 'n' giggles, here's a list I came up with if I was going to localize the whole NES series from the beginning with River City Ransom in mind:

Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun / Renegade ---> River City Renegade
Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu / Super Dodgeball ---> River City High: Dodgeball Club
Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari / River City Ransom ---> OK!
Mekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu: Soccer Hen ---> River City High: Soccer squad
Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundokai ---> River City Run: Street Sports (sub: "Let's Go to the Great Athletic Meet!")
Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zen'in Shuugou! ---> River City Ransom: Kunio's Period Piece (sub: "Assemble Everyone!")
Ike Ike! Mekketsu Hockey-bu: Subette Koronde Dairantou ---> River City High: Hockey Club (sub: "Skate, Fall, Great Free-for-All Brawl!")
Bikkuri Nekketsu Shinkiroku: Harukanaru Kin Medal / Crash 'n' the Boys Street Challenge ---> River City Run: Street Challenge (sub: "New Records and the Distant Gold Medal")
Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu ---> River City Rumble: Fighting Legend
Kunio-kun no Nekketsu Soccer League ---> River City High: Kunio's Soccer League
Nekketsu! Street Basket: Ganbare Dunk Heroes ---> River City High: Basketball Club (sub: "Keep at it, Dunk Heroes!")

This. I like this. Would be great is someone did all these title screen hacks!

Awesome, I have been waiting for this! Thank You to your whole team for all the work up until this point. Keep it up!

A hack to get the newly-dumped prototype of Tyrannosaurus Tex to work on all emulators and flash carts.

I really like the sound of all of this. And I think you will get a lot of interest once it is all done and someone from japan either copies the idea or re-translates it back to Japanese, as girl and boy-love games are nothing new and strange over there.

These are my favorites:

MDbtroid is a fantastic Metroid facelift: http://metroid-database.com/fanapps/
Metal Army for MegaMan (tho I personally reverted the megaman sprite back to default): http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/777/
AC Death for Gradius II makes the game more arcade-like: http://messatu.wordpress.com/
Mario DX for Mario (I should post my tweaked version up, perhaps): http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/144/

I hope others will share theirs.

Oh yeah...
And Cute Zelda: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/26/

Awesome. I just got back from vacation and will try these out asap and give you some feedback real soon. Been eager to try them.

Sorry its taking me a while to get back with proper feedback. I have been trying to bait my roommate into playing 2 player with me so we can really feel it out properly. I did test out the first stage of DD1 myself on both the unaltered rom and easymode rom and I think the changes seem great. Survivability is definitely up on the easy mode. I can't say much about long term balance, but so far it seems to be pretty great. By myself I nearly ran out of lives on the first stage, but had just lost one on easymode, which seems reasonable considering I went into it unpracticed.

I would say these are already ready to go for submission on the site. You can always tweak and squash bugs as people give you more feedback. I will give you more feedback when I get a proper play with my roomie.

Once you get your current projects squared away, I have a request for a game to work on; Mr.Gimmick. A super awesome game that is of course, quite hard.

Suggested fixes:
Increased/Unlimited lives vs Infinite continues: If you continue the game at all, you can't get the good ending. So increasing the starting lives would be nice so it is much more unlikely you got to continue.

2 hits per dot (8 max health) vs 1 hit per dot (4 max health): This would be trickier, but definitely nice to be able to take more hits. Maybe have the first hit make the dot flash, the second hit makes it disappear, but that would probably be more programming trickery then you aim to do with this project.

Thats really all that needs to be tweaked with this one. Platforming can still be deadly, not much can be done about that. Its a great game, probably one of the most advanced on the nes, that could use a little love if your up to it.

Hope the file hosting situation gets worked out. Box.net works well for me.

Please do release them. I have been eager to give all the games you mentioned a try. I think there are a lot of ace retro gamers on this forum who grew up on nes-hard games, which is why perhaps your not getting as much attention for these balance patches as you should. I never really started gaming until the snes/genesis era, and even then there are plenty of hard games I think could use balance patches like these. Megaman X 1 is a perfect example of a difficult, but not impossibly hard game. I think that is really about how hard they should get. I remember feeling so frustrated as a kid on some rentals when I could not get past the first level. Anyway, so that is why I support your efforts. Please keep it up and do share them patches.

Made a Jeopardy! NES hack for a video game broadcaster over the summer. Most of the answers are inside jokes about the show and his followers, as well as other casters on the site. I think he enjoyed it.

This looks like awesome fun. You should totally tweak it to be less inside-jokey and release a patch!

How goes the project? With the release of the super awesome Double Dragon Neon, I have had a wicked itch to play the original games, none of which I ever beat.

I should also say that even if im putting patches in my posts, i'm still putting these up here in hopes of feedback.. if making changes will make them look better i'm all for doing so as suggested.

Well, for feedback, I got to say it looks great I think.   Wish I had a bit more constructive to add, but it looks quite nice, and that sums it up.
