Script Help and Language Discussion / Some SciFi mumbo-jumbo
« on: October 22, 2013, 11:06:38 am »
The original is Korean, but the problem isn't so much the translation but to find a good word for in English.

The game is Astrocounter of Crescents, a sidescrolling action game where people fight in robot suits: http://translation.derboo.de/crescents.html

In the game, the new suit models seem to allow the pilots to move naturally as the robot (kinda like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Pacific Rim, only with small size robots) through a technology that literally translates to "Organic-Activation-System" or "Bio-Activation-System", but I think that sounds kinda weird. Any better ideas?

Here's the translated description from the game's manual:
"As the name says, a system that covers the entire metabolism of the organism and initiates a widespread overall acceleration process.
The Organic-Activation-System centers around the interconnection of organic life and machine in an outer space environment and was first employed in the Artemis Project prototypes Alent, Bulgidung and Zenith. Artemis Project is currently in the process of intensifying
Biofeedback between Bulgidung and its Pilot."

Not in the proper sense, but the colloquial one, as in: "My translation philosophy is to stay as close as possible to the source text." (just a hypothetical example)

My next Korean-to-English RPG translation project after Romance of the Forgotten Kingdom. This time it's a Windows game from 2000, which has also been released in Taiwan, China and Japan. While the mechanics are similar to well-known JRPGs like Chrono Trigger or Grandia, the world is fairly openly explorable from the beginning, mostly sectioned by the strength of the monster encounters (compare the first Baldur's Gate in this regard).

Combat is most comparable to Grandia II, monsters are visible on the map to begin with, and it's very involved ATB where timing actually matters. It's possible to avoid enemy attacks by moving out to attack at the right moment, for example, but attacking enemies can also be missed. The party consists of up to five heroes, so later in the game there's much to do during combat.

Hi-res spritework and animation are great, with only the backgrounds falling a bit behind. I also like the music, although it's comparatively quiet and low-key. The composer, Hwang Jooeun, also did music for The War of Genesis and Rhapsody of Zephyr (and later Ez2DJ, Kingdom of the Wind, Aion and others).

I can't translate the main text body yet as I haven't figured out the pointer table and scripting (I've place a help wanted ad for the hacking in general), so I've started with character and item names and stuff. The first screenshot is a translated one (the text in graphics was English from the beginning, element affinity is still in Korean cause it needs pointers set to fit in English).

Programming / Help with custom image format
« on: May 26, 2011, 07:55:37 pm »
I'm trying to figure out this overcomplicated image format, but I don't know what to do, anymore.

sample-1.dat, sample-2.dat are the raw binary versions of the original format
sample-1.png, sample-2.png are the same images how they appear on the screen

Big versions:

sample-1

sample-2

Every image starts with basic information. For example, here's from sample-2.dat:
8400 0000   image width (132)
2100 0000   image height (33)
0C06 0000   data block length (inverted), starting with the next following byte

Then it goes through each line from left to right like this:

0A01      one black pixel
000C 0100   ???
E1E1 E1E1   4 brown pixels
0A01      one black pixel
000B 0200   ???
E1E1      2 brown pixels
0A01      one black pixel
000B 0300   ???
E1E1 E1      3 brown pixels
0A02      two black pixels
000B 0100   ???
E1         1 brown pixel
0A06      six black pixels
000C 0100   ???
E1E1 E1E1   4 brown pixels
0A01      one black pixel
000B 0100   ???
E1         1 brown pixel
0A02      two black pixels
000C 0100   ???
E1E1 E1E1   4 brown pixels
0A01      one black pixel
000B 0100   ???
E1         1 brown pixel
0A02      two black pixels
000B 0300   ???
E1E1 E1      3 brown pixels
0A02      two black pixels
000B 0100   ???
E1         1 brown pixels
0A59      89 black pixels
000D 0C04 00   ???

Then it starts with the next line. 0F are pixels in the bright color.
I have no idea what the bits in between (with the ???) are for, but changing them apparently makes the line be shifted somewhere around the whole screen, changing many of them messes up the whole screen.

What are good names for items that heal stunned allies? How about items that make enemies unable to use magic skills?

Generally trying to avoid silly ones.
