Personal Projects / SD Splatterhouse needs a better sub-title

Hello my friends. Sorry that there isn't a better place to put this.

I'm re-doing the SD Splatterhouse translation as a low-priority project... My earlier efforts were kind of sloppy, and I think the game deserves a lot better.

The problem is with the game's sub-title. In Japan the game's known as Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti, which I guess translates to "naughty/playful graffiti". This is an absolutely terrible sub-title. And, I can't think of an English version that actually sounds good. Even "Wanpaku Graffiti" on its own sounds stupid.

So my question is:
1) Can anyone think of a better wording of this? The front-runner so far among my friends' suggestions has been "Goofy Graffiti", which gets a bonus for alliteration, but still isn't great.
2) Should I just leave it in Japanese? I went this route with Ganbare Goemon, and I think it worked out fine.
3) Would it be better to just think up a new sub-title entirely? "Super Deformed" isn't so bad, right? Or maybe something else?

Gaming Discussion / List of untranslated Famicom games

I mentioned in the other thread that I was working on a comprehensive list of all Japanese games and their availability in English. At first I was like "god, are they ever going to stop translating NES games, MOVE ON, people" but now I'm looking at it and I'm like "YAAAAAAY only 318 left to go!!!!!!!"

This was time-consuming, but a lot of fun. I might work on a list for SNES next (or Playstation, as someone suggested, but testing all the games seems really difficult).

I'm sure I got a lot of stuff wrong, so I'm counting on all of you to correct me. :)

Programming / Why would you do this? (SCD 68k)

So I'm trying to figure out the graphics compression for a Sega CD game. It seems like pretty basic stuff, only a handful of lines, but I'm kind of stumped as to a certain bit in there. It seems to consist of a lot of strings of values, preceded by a four-byte control code.

Is this right, that D7 is being shifted zero bits to the left? What could be the possible benefit of that? And then immediately overwriting it with a new byte? Is "#0" just some kind of weird secret debugger code for "eight"? :)

Also is there some kind of ridiculously verbose mode for Gens Tracer? I'm quite the beginner when it comes to assembly, and it would be nice to see this code being processed over and over again to see what it does with different values. The only trace that Gens Tracer shows for me is for the initial control code of 00000000, which isn't helpful. :)

Personal Projects / The Mysterious Murasame Castle

For a long while now I've been bothered by the fact that in my last translation of Nazo no Murasame Jou, I translated the title as Riddle of Murasame Castle, which is the wrongest thing. So I decided to fix it, and InVerse made a new title screen for the game, and I fixed up the castle names and file menus so that more space is available to them, and it all looks lovely.

I've got a lot of crap in the works, and I hate people who just release their stuff on a forum (like I've been doing), so I made a quick little temporary page for all my stuff. You can find the new Murasame Castle translation, and lots more, at:

Personal Projects / Die Hard TG16

Did you know that Die Hard was released for the Turbografx in Japan, and that it's different from every other version? Neither did I! It's a kind of a weird shooter with a top-down perspective like Commando or Ikari Warriors, and for whatever reason you have to fight through a jungle to even get to the Nakatomi Building.



That's just a quick thing I hacked into the game, I don't actually know what it says. The font's stored in a semi-funky barely-compressed format, but once I figured that out and inserted a new font it was a snap to locate and extract all the text (about 2k in total). Should be a quick little project! If anyone is able to translate, please send me a PM here, or email me at spinner_8@parodius.com.

I've recently caught the hacking bug again, and I've got like four other projects in the works right now (and all on completely different systems... whoops), so you can expect a few more things from me in the future.
