ROM Hacking Discussion / Zelda 1 Sprite Hacking
« on: April 29, 2017, 11:16:18 am »
I'm having some difficulty viewing the item and Link's sprites properly. They almost appear as what they should look like in game, however there is a single line in each sprite that is missing making it hard to edit them correctly.

Newcomer's Board / FF I Bugs
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:43:47 am »
I've noticed a few bugs(?) in my hack that I need help fixing.
-The amount of Potions/Antidotes in your inventory is not shown
-The Fiend battle music does not play (instead mini boss theme does)
-Default equipment does not appear even though I changed those values in a hex editor

Also, though this isn't a bug, can someone tell me if it is possible to increase the amount of weapons/armor within FFHackster?

ROM Hacking Discussion / FF I Miscellaneous Changes
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:24:25 pm »
I found this hack which includes a myriad of changes to the original. There are a few in particular (see below) that I would want to apply to my hack as well. So I'm wondering how can I apply only the desired changes to my ROM? I couldn't find any patches that only changed just some of those elements without the others. Is there any way someone could walk me through the process of implementing them myself?

-New, animated title added at game startup
-Saving is now done from the main menu instead of via inns, tents, & such
-You can now sort your magic spells and delete unwanted ones
-Water & such things are animated now
-Default (pre-bought/equipped) equipment & spells added at new game
-Dual-wield ability given to Ninja
-Elemental magic does 2x (instead of 1.5x) damage against vulnerable enemies

ROM Hacking Discussion / Hacker's Block
« on: April 07, 2017, 09:54:04 pm »
1. the condition of being unable to think of what to hack or how to proceed with hacking.
2. my equivalent of an existential crisis

Seriously I don't know if it's just me, but I keep having this issue. I will work tirelessly night and day on a project for a while and then suddenly lose all motivation. It's not that I don't have the intention of returning to the project to finish it, but I feel like I need a break for a bit. Sometimes thoughts of doubt enter my mind as I wonder if anyone will truly enjoy my hack or if I'm just wasting my time. After all, there are people that know a lot more than me when it comes to creating extensive hacks and they could produce much better content I feel like. I hate that I think this way because I genuinely love what I do as well as this community in general. ROM hacking is my #1 hobby and I wish so much I could put all my energy and effort in it 24/7 (well, I already do for the most part...)

Anyway, does anyone else ever feel this way? If so, how do you cope with the discouraging thoughts and lack of motivation?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Final Fantasy I Tileset Hacking?
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:03:53 am »
I'm looking to move FF III graphics to FF I, specifically tiles from the overworld, dungeons, towns, etc. However, I'm not really sure how to go about this. When I open the two ROMs side by side none of the tilesets are aligned the same on both, and on top of that I can barely tell what anything is. I've seen it been done with FF V graphics so I know it's possible... Can anyone help me out? Where should I start the process?

I'm not really confident in my abilities to this, but I guess I'll have to learn eventually so... :P

Personal Projects / Final Fantasy I Redux [COMPLETE]
« on: April 04, 2017, 02:47:44 pm »

Hey everyone! Thought I'd reveal a hack I've been working for a week or so now. This is similar to other hacks which emphasize on "modernizing" FFI, making it updated and overall more enjoyable to play. However, I have taken much more creative freedom than most others. Also (before anyone else mentions it), the base patch for the ROM is Final Fantasy Restored, an excellent patch that fixes many of the bugs plaguing FFI and updates the feel of the game. So make sure you check that out too!

EDIT: The hack is now complete! Download the latest version Here

ROM Hacking Discussion / FFHackster Stats Question
« on: April 03, 2017, 07:21:37 am »
I'm trying to make custom jobs, but I just realized that because there are 2 jobs per table my stats aren't going to turn out quite how I want them to for each job. If I can't make 12 unique tables, then can I at least choose which table is assigned to which class? (i.e. Changing Warrior & Knight table to Warrior & Master, that way they both occupy the same table).

EDIT: Another example (for magic) would be assigning the Black Wizard's magic table to the same as the Master's, therefor giving no magic points in total to the new Black Wizard.

ROM Hacking Discussion / FFHackster Text Question
« on: April 02, 2017, 11:13:20 am »
I have a minor yet exceedingly frustrating problem. For some reason the first two black magic spells' names keep changing. For example, when I change the first one's name then the second one's name will change as well (to the new first spell's name). I tried looking in a hex editor only to find that there is only room for one name there (either spell 1 or spell 2). After that it goes straight to spell 3 leaving one in total missing. Someone please tell me how to fix this cause I'm losing my shit.

I cannot find this information anywhere, but I know it has been done before. Apparently it's as simple as changing an 06 to an 0C; the only problem being I don't know what 06 value it is. Can someone help me out here?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Final Fantasy IV Changing Battle Sprite Palettes
« on: February 23, 2017, 04:10:11 pm »
I'm finally back to working on FF IV! So I've started implementing some FF V sprites into the ROM, but I need to know how to change the FF IV palettes to reflect what the colors should appear as in FF V. Does anyone know the process for going about this? Also, if I change the palette for let's say Palom, will that also affect the palette for Porom? Or are they separated?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Arranging Tiles in YYCHR
« on: January 23, 2017, 03:12:52 pm »
I am having an exceptional difficult time editing the intro graphics for Zelda Oracle of Ages at the moment. Even with the graphic format set to GB and the pattern set to NESx16 I can only see scrambled fragments of what should be the portrait of Link riding Epona. The problem is that I am not able to see it in the editor as it appears in game and thus am unsure of where to make changes. Is there anyway I can arrange them using a map file or something similar? Also related to this, it would help even more to be able to see the palettes as they appear in game as well. I have exported a .pal file and loaded it in YYCHR, but am unsure what to do from there.

Personal Projects / The Legend of Emi Oracle of Grace
« on: January 07, 2017, 02:29:18 pm »
Though it is still extremely early and I have little complete I would like to unveil my next project. This will be a hack of The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages. All I have done so far is created the new main character's sprites and the font (much easier on the eyes now). I am still learning how to disassemble the game so that I can change the title screen, intro, etc. When it is finished it will contain a completely new story, new characters, and such. Think of it as the long lost 3rd oracle game that never saw the light of day :)

Long ago the Triforce was entrusted to the goddess Emi by the very deities who first created it in hopes that she could protect it for all eternity. For centuries peace reigned in the kingdom of Ruibaru thanks to the power of the Triforce. However, the light in the world was eventually threatened by a rising darkness that sought to seize the power of the Triforce as predicted by the 8 Oracles of the land long before. The Demon King Kage who lead the army of darkness was successful in obtaining the Triforce of Power before being defeated in the battle for the Earth. The goddess in attempt to protect the remaining 2 pieces kept the Triforce of Wisdom and entrusted the power within the Triforce of Courage to the 8 Oracles. Each was given a piece and locked away within a faraway shrine. The final action Emi could take was to divide the world into two dimensions: one of darkness and one of light. Now, with the last of her strength she summons a hero from a distant land to retrieve the Triforce shards and use their power to defeat the darkness once and for all, restoring balance to the world.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Zelda Oracle of Ages Hacking
« on: January 06, 2017, 06:25:13 pm »
So I noticed there is yet another great game which does not have any completed ROM hacks yet! As soon as I finish my CV3 hack I will be moving on to ZoOA, but I figured I already have some questions so I figured I would just make a thread for them here.
For starters, I was messing with graphics and I noticed that I couldn't find the location of the intro/title screen or the in game font grapchis.
Any ideas where these may be? (I've checked on data crystal already)

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania III Hacking Questions
« on: December 24, 2016, 09:17:27 am »
I know there isn't a lot of documentation on this game unfortunately, but I figured I would start a thread to see if anyone could answer any of the questions I have / will have while developing my hack. First off, does anyone know how changing bosses works using reVamp? For some stages modifying the bosses works and for others it doesn't. Right now I have an issue where I changed the boss of the Sunken City to Death, but after you defeat him when the stage ends it boots you back to Stage 1. My guess would be that it is some kind of error handler since the game should be taking you to the second part of the stage at that point. So if I could just find where the code tells the game what level to take you to next then it should be fixable hypothetically, right?

Personal Projects / Castlevania III Prelude of Light
« on: December 22, 2016, 07:54:29 pm »
Hey everyone! I thought I'd share some info on my latest project :) I am currently working on a hack of CV3 known as Castlevania III Prelude of Light (name finalized). This is my most ambitious hack thus far and so I am doing my best to make it the best experience I can for hardcore fans of classic Castlevania. Honestly I am surprised by the lack of work that has been done on such an amazing game so I have gotten in contact with levelengine, another CV3 hacker, who is assisting in the project as well. I don't want to spoil too much so I won't be revealing much more until the hack is released, but expect a fresh new Castlevania III by the time it is finished!

*For those wondering yes this is the same project I posted before, but I needed to move it to the right section of the forums.

The story takes place in an alternate timeline where Dracula defeated the Belmonts and conquered all of Europe. Thus, a new generation of Vampire Hunters are born and team up to restore peace to Transylvania. The story definitely doesn't take itself too seriously and the dialogue between the characters is meant to be witty and entertaining.

    Opening Prologue:

    Vampire Hunter

    • Redesigned stages
    • New characters
    • An Expert difficulty
    • Modified sprites & palettes
    • Rewritten story & dialogue
    • Day to night transition

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania III: Dracula's Revenge
    « on: December 07, 2016, 10:54:00 pm »
I'm finally back and I have another big new project! I am working on a hack of CV3 (aka the best and my favorite). This hack includes entirely reworked level design, modified sprites, and a level of difficulty that will be even more frustrating than the original. The story is still being written and the title will likely be changed in the future. So far all that has been completed is stage 1 and I am still familiarizing myself with the editor (reVamp). There are many unexpected limitations I have to work around, but despite that I am still doing my best to create the long awaited CV3 hack people have wanted for so long now :)

    Stage #1:

ROM Hacking Discussion / Stake Castlevania Editor Question
    « on: December 06, 2016, 07:37:34 pm »
Does anyone know how to remove stairs or breakable blocks when editing objects??? I swear I have tried everything, but just can't figure it out.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania III reVamp Utility Not Working?
    « on: December 06, 2016, 10:45:14 am »
I can't seem to get the utility to open up any ROM I have. It says it only takes the Castlevania III (US) and Akumajou Densetsu (J) ROMs, but I have tried both of those and neither have worked. Has anyone else had this complication?

Newcomer's Board / Looking for Experienced Sprite Editor & Team Members
    « on: September 01, 2016, 07:37:58 am »
I am in desperate need of someone who is familiar with editing sprites. Specifically, I'm trying to replace certain FF IV sprites with FF V sprites as well as change the palettes of some sprites, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

    Here is the project:,22582.0.html

If you aren't good at sprite editing, but would like to be a part of the team then let me know :)
It would be great to have more people to help out with this hack! (Especially if they know a lot about FF IV hacking!)

(Also, sorry if I posted this in the wrong location. I wasn't sure where to post requests so I just came here. Sorry!)

Personal Projects / Final Fantasy IV Heroes of Light & Dark
    « on: August 28, 2016, 12:00:47 pm »
So I've started on a new long term project I'm calling Final Fantasy IV Heroes of Light & Dark and I was looking for some feedback. This hack is going to provide a completely new story with new characters, and will take place in an alternate universe of the FF IV world. The game alternates between 2 parties, one of light and one of darkness, which each are on a quest to save the Crystals and recover their lost friends. It is worth noting that this hack is meant to have a brutal difficulty that will provide a challenge even for veteran FF IV players. It would be greatly appreciated if you would check out the demo and let me know what you think of this idea! Thanks :)

In a world where evil threatens the power of the Crystals once again, children from another land are summoned to rise against it. Confused as to what is happening before them, they soon learn of the ancient Mysidian prophecy which foretold their quest long ago. They then set out to find their lost allies and to save this new world they now call reality.
