ROM Hacking Discussion / Need some input on this idea
« on: August 12, 2016, 09:21:32 pm »
I had a great idea for a future project. Port an NES game to SNES.

Better graphics.
Better music.

Is this something anyone would be interested in seeing?

What game do you suggest I try? And don't say something that's already been ported to a better system, like FF1.

Gaming Discussion / Super Mario Maker
« on: March 15, 2016, 09:03:47 pm »
Apparently, Nintendo has been randomly deleting peoples saved/shared level creations.
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2016/03/nintendo-still-wont-explain-why-theyre-deleting-peoples-mario-maker-levels/

I only bring this up because we were talking (a while back) about how this game would affect Rom Hacking.

To be fair, the deleted ones probably sucked / were boring.

Thoughts?

Programming / Advice on making GUI tool
« on: February 20, 2016, 07:48:45 pm »
I'm probably not going to do this, because I have ZERO experience programming a GUI...

But, I've been thinking about making a more complete hack of Punch-Out, with graphic changes. And I was thinking, since all the tiles are scrambled, I was considering the idea of programming a tool to unscramble the tiles, allow you to edit them, and reinsert them into the ROM in real time.

Again... I probably won't do this. But, if I did such a thing... I would opt to make it in Python and Pillow (and TkInter?). But, then if anyone else wanted to use it, they would have to have Python and Pillow installed to use it.

How would you guys approach this kind of project?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Where is the Zelda Disassembly
« on: January 12, 2016, 11:27:09 pm »
Hey, about a year ago, I saw a Legend of Zelda disassembly...somewhere. But, I can't find it.

Does anyone have a Link (pun intended) to it?

Gaming Discussion / crazy prices for NES games
« on: December 17, 2015, 07:55:28 pm »
I bought a bunch of NES games recently (including some homebrews/repros)...and I was really surprised at the crazy nonsense prices. Some games that I love (Ducktales) were like $6. Punch-out ran me $35 (makes sense)...but then Megaman was $100. Megaman 3 $60. Metalstorm was $125. And I think there was 1 for $200. Lolo (another of my favorites) was a reasonable $6.

Castlevania ...I really wanted... but not for $40. Come on! Really?

Any thoughts why the prices were all over the place?

Newcomer's Board / Megaman 1 help

So I have a question regarding Mega Man 1 hacking. I have slight experience in 6502 ASM (by slight I mean I can display a sprite using nesasm :-D too low? D:) and I was wondering: if I wanted to add a couple of stages to MM1,how many pointers would have to be changed? Maybe a code snippet for me to learn from to see how the stage select data works. I know I'dhave to add the TSA values and respective banks, but other than level data, would anything else be severely nmessed up? Also if I were to add a couple of new songs...is any of this possible? I think it's simple for those who know more ASM than me, haha :-) Anyway... Thanks in advance!

add a couple of stages

How would the stage select work with more levels? This idea is probably going to require a very good understanding of ASM, and a lot of work. Unless you are simply going to modify the existing levels...much more reasonable.

add a couple of new songs
Same response. Easier to change the existing ones than add more.

Edit: in a separate thread you asked about MM5. Is it 1 or 5 that you're working on?

Gaming Discussion / What is the most disappointing game you played.
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:55:42 pm »
I was just thinking about old games, and I thought I'd start a conversation about bad games. Did you ever see a game in the store, and it looked so cool. And you got it home and it just SUCKED.

For me, I remember "Deadly Towers" being awful.

And I was hugely disappointed by Final Fantasy:Crisis Core for PSP.

Newcomer's Board / 2 new homebrew NES games
« on: April 27, 2015, 11:09:49 am »
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum, though I've been visiting the site for years.

I just got into programming the NES (for and emulator) and finished my first 2 projects this month. They have been posted on the homebrew section if anyone wants to check them out.

http://www.romhacking.net/homebrew/68/
http://www.romhacking.net/homebrew/69/

The first is an action platform jumper called "Purple Cape Man". It was originally going to be something different, but I changed all the text and title and graphics at the last minute, to avoid any kind of possible legal issues.

The second is a simple drawing game, "Paint or Draw".

All original programming, all original graphics and music.

Btw, I'm looking to work on other homebrew projects, if anyone is interested in collaborating. I'm a pretty good musician, and I have a degree in Graphic Design. And I know Assembly for 6502.
