ROM Hacking Discussion / Anyone ever hacked Kingdom Hearts?

I realize the hacking scene doesn't touch much past the ps1 N64 era, but as popular as these games are there is literally nothing about hacks or editors for them anywhere (unless you count the people who used an action replay and called it a hack)

I hated how characters not in the party never gained any exp, since the main character is forced on you I figured the easiest way to remedy this is change the pointer for each charcter's current exp (I assume its stored in ram) and have it point to the main character's.

the question is how do I find the location of a ram value and how do I find the pointer for it?

Opened a few ps2 ISOs in my hex editor and they just came back as all zeros, is my editor just not reading it or is it just not done that way on ps2? Fyi I've opened ps1 ISOs that way and they worked just fine.

I'm having a bugger of a time with temporal flux overwriting rom data instead of using free space, it seems that it regards FF or 00 as free space, I've found where it's storing my added text boxes and it's right about the entrance names which is what's currently being glitched.

So my theory is that if I can put some padding code in that space hoping it will jump to the expanded space, the question is what should I fill that space with so the game doesn't regard it as either free space or data/code.

far enough along in this that I think its time to post it here, this project is an expansion of the vanilla Chrono trigger that adds new areas and alot of unused content.

Includes full exploration of all Zeal continents and a new time period 1999.









New dungeon in 2300ad using the previously unused coliseum

The Porre Ferry now goes to Choras allowing its exploration from the beginning

Triple techs from Rocks are now learned permanently thanks to coding by Mauron

Crono's mom now has a room

Singing mountain and Battle 2 songs are added in

The frog king and Johnny can now both be fought

2 unused weapons of Lucca's added in containing unique projectiles

Magus' red scythe from the ocean palace cut scene can now be obtained.

Also a pretty substantial re balancing thats a little tougher but makes everything more useful.

Newcomer's Board / How do I upload a hack?

The only field still giving me grief is the one labeled 'filename' arguably the most important one and the only one without an effing help box.

I made the IPS then zipped it, I tried uploading it to both Dropbox and tinyupload and posted the link in that box but it refused it. Saying invalid file extension, even though it's a zip.

Tried to make an IPS patch for a ds game but it gave me an error about some 16mb limit. So is there another program that will let me make this patch?

Anyone have an IPS for this hack? I downloaded the graphics (all that I could find) and inserted them manually using lunar magic but for some reason the world map is a complete clusterf***, everything else looks good though

This hack is designed to make the first Bof play smoother. more like 2 3 and to some extent 4. Here's what has been done so far

  1 Most equipment altered both in strength and name to match the later games in the series, most names and numbers are taken from later games and not made up by me , this has the effect of making the game slightly harder.

 2 level gain is smooth and consistent throughout the game gains have been altered to accommodate the much faster gain.

 3 joining characters now join at a level competitive to your party's (no more stragglers)

 4 restored snes palette (WiP)

hard to take a good shot of damage but you can easily see Karn just hit 1744 damage

really want to release this but I want to have the spells Shin and Debo switched for balance purposes before I do, I could really use some help finding that data.

Newcomer's Board / Breath of Fire I hack

I've been hacking BoF gba for about a year and I'm anxious to release it but the last thing that I want to do is swap the Shin and Debo spells,

I have 2 save states one in front of each of the two guys that teach those spells.but I just don't know what to do now

Any solution would be acceptable, be it switching the pointer, swapping the spell data, or swapping the entire room

As soon as this is done I can release this, any help would be appreciated.

Tried to get Spekkio to change forms when he is beaten instead of when you reach a certain level

So I found the lines "load enemy Spekkio if memory 7F0??? <= 09, etc" and switched it to memory 7F00E1 (the one that is changed every time a form is beaten,

It worked at first, I was lv 10 and he was still a frog then I beat him left and re entered he was a kilwala beat him again left and re entered he was still a god damned kilwala checked the code but my numbers looked spot on.

If anyone actually understood that is it possible to fix this?

What kind of program would I need to download in order to view and extract all the files in a genesis rom? Most specifically compressed graphics. I use Crystaltile 2 for DS and it works great but sadly it only works for DS.

I've been slowly making progress on the ds game attack of the saiyans graphics hack I have been trying to do, so far I have managed to find the graphics I want to edit, I have also found out how to apply them to the character I want to replace, but I cant edit the graphics because they are a jumbled mess and all the editors I've tried I've not been able to get a proper palette file of get them to show up even somewhat arranged.

because it's an uncompressed file crystaltile2 doesn't seem to be able to do anything with it. but I do know that the file has the palettes and is mapped because I can stick it anywhere in the game and it still looks fine.

Been trying to do a graphics hack on attack of the saiyans ds, I watched a video explaining it using crystal tile but they opened a compressed .carc file of which there is no such thing in AotS the files that are most likely are .chr and .ima anyone here good at DS hacking that can help me out?

Personal Projects / Mario RPG play testers needed for new hack

I'm getting kind of sick of running through this and plus I want feedback as well so I'm submitting my Mario RPG "my way" hack, its basically a hard mode hack, I know there are lots but I felt they all changed too much so I made my own, it also eliminates missables.

here is the changelog

-Doubled all enemy hp
Inreased all enemy attack and magic attack by 30%

-Renamed Toadstool Peach and reordered her learned spells so she gets comeback and grouphug last
( she still learns them all by lv18 and still becomes the best character but she just wont completly break the game the moment she joins anymore)

Made Samus cameo last whole game.

Moved mushroom castle treasure to the ground so its unmissable.

Made it so you must beat pipe vault to get to Moleville.

made it much harder for Culex to run out of FP.

coins now go to 9999

added a trampoline to the end of smithy's factory

pickme ups cost 50 coins now and maple syrups recover half as much now

and lastly removed the abusable stars at lands end.

added a Luigi cameo in Rose Town (must disable layers to see)

Anyone familliar with Attack of the Saiyans on DS? If you're a fan than you must be as annoyed as I was that Brolly was the secret boss in such an early saga, so I've started making a sprite sheet for Turles a much more appropriate boss for that time period.

I'm about half done right now and when I am I want to stick it in the game to replace Brolly.

Newcomer's Board / Just a few newb questions

So after years of playing around and reading endless cryptic documents I finally managed to change something intentionally in a game, I managed to change some text in Breath of fire gba using windhex so now that I understand the basic concept I just have some questions that I need clarified.

1: the hacking that I mentioned above is that rom corruption or asm?

2: in the same game if I want to edit level up stats or armor defense values what kind of hacking is needed?

3: whats the best tool for making tables? I'm using monkey moore but doesnt seem to work for Mystic quest and I dont speak the language the readme is in

4: graphics hacking is hard is there any way to pull the spritesheets out edit them in photoshop and stuff them back in?
