Great to see an update! Guess I can give this another run while trying to endure the wait for the sequel's translation.

Awesome news! Thanks for the update & best of luck with those finishing touches (and with the real life business!)

Some great ideas here, though I have to ask: Have you ever considered a similar project for Ys?

Zelda 1 has a ton of great hacks, but the NES version of Ys 1 has seen little love since the translation and could really use a few QoL improvements (the screen not scrolling until you're right by the edge is rather problematic in a game with bump combat, for example).

I'm still rather partial to my Link sprites (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3702/) ;D

Of course, I can always just make an addendum when this hack gets out of beta. Looking forward to that 1.0!

Major congrats on another milestone in SNES translations! Your team has certainly been busy. It's really awesome to see all the SNES MegaTen games finally playable in English

Thanks! While this fixes the freeze, it doesn't appear to be any more complete than the current (broken) translation, unless I'm missing something (only played a bit, so I could be, but it mainly looks like the same menu translation).

I made an IPS file for those who would prefer easier patching:

It's looking great so far :)

Very minor note: the "Hey Goemon, did you know..." line spoken by your next-door neighbor in the first village should end with a question mark rather than a period.

I was wondering if you and DDS would aim for a simultaneous release with this and Goemon 2, but to see it released now is cool as well. Congrats and thanks for your work in giving some much-deserved love to the Goemon series!

ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Wip projects for the 7th saga (Snes)

Thanks! All the PC shadows were edited, though I just tossed a few examples together for the above image. I wouldn't worry about sending me a compressed version, as I like the faster load times and don't really mind the file size. I might ask for that if I were to post the patch here officially, but I'm not sure that such a minor sprite hack merits it. I've actually made a bunch of touch-up sprite hacks like this ;D

What changes are you planning for your updated decompression patch? I haven't run into any bugs thus far, even when combined with "The New Class."

Also really looking forward to your completed Gradius 3 hack!

So this is a petty detail that probably only matters to me, but I've always found it distracting how some of the player characters seem to have overly jagged shadows. Since slidelljohn was kind enough to share that deccompressor patch a while back, I went ahead and smoothed/simplified the shadows. All the PC shadows have been tweaked, though the changes are most noticeable on Kamil and Esuna.

I also touched up Lejes' horns to make him more closely resemble his appearance in the Japanese game, though I left his newer palette intact.

The patch is available here (includes the decompressor):
https://www.mediafire.com/file/r6vdr83103qrmq3/7th_Saga_%5BNewShadowsPlus%5D.zip/file

It's also worth noting that this appears to work fine with Nati's "The New Class" re-balancing hack, though since that hack adds a header, it has to be removed prior to applying this or the decompressor.

What, you think that after all these years I've suddenly abandoned ship? And right at the end, with but a few lines of text remaining?

I may be slower than a sloth, but hey, I'm steady too.

;D Definitely appreciate the work you've put into this. It's got to feel good to finally see it all coming to fruition!

This is one of those titles I remember seeing blurbs about in gaming mags back in the 90's. Alongside the likes of Seiken Densetsu 3 and Tales of Phantasia, the young me figured I'd never get to play these games in English. I'll be raising a glass to you all when this release hits!

Congrats on the release! It's a pleasure playing through this gem again - definitely one of the best games of its type.

Thanks for your dedication in sticking with this project

It's awesome to hear that things are shaping up! You've clearly had a lot on your plate, so I appreciate you taking the time to update us at all. Really looking forward to seeing this gem playable in English after all these years.

Personal Projects / Re: Tales of Phantasia SNES (Enhancement) (Slow WIP)
« on: January 25, 2019, 08:48:05 am »
Compared to many games from the era, I didn't find the encounter rate too bad. The real issue is simply that battles often take longer here.

While I would be fine with slightly less frequent encounters, doubling the experience rate sounds like it might drain a lot of the challenge from the game. Things will already be easier with enhanced control over your party, and I wouldn't want the game's difficulty curve to feel shot.

Thanks for continuing to work on this over the years! I expect you've still got at least months of work to go, but it's exciting to hear that the end is in sight.

Good luck with that vram project! It sounds really ambitious

I've done a number of side-by-side tests with the Gradius 3 fastrom hack and the improvement is noticeable, though as slidelljohn stated there is still slowdown. However, when combining the hack with an emulator that allows for overclocking (such as the Snes9X 2010 Libretro core for RetroArch), the game is virtually slowdown-free. It's pretty awesome after all these years to play one of the first 16-bit shmups the way it was meant to be played. Gradius 3 is a personal favorite of mine (I prefer the SNES version--that soundtrack is gold), and seeing it running so smooth (also flicker-free using the above emulator) is a real treat.

Totally agree on the Shining Force vibe. And it's already done! Great way to end off a pretty big year for SNES translations.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Beyond Oasis Dialogue Font
« on: November 18, 2018, 10:17:25 pm »
I recently got the urge to give this old Genesis gem another playthrough, and while I can get past the subpar frame rate, I was instantly reminded of how bad the dialogue font is. The font is literally too tall for the tiles, resulting in the black outline occasionally getting cut off at the top or bottom of certain letters or symbols (like the quotation marks). It just looks unprofessional.

No problem, I thought. I'll just take a look with YYCHR and touch up the font as needed.

The only problem is that I can't seem to find the dialogue font anywhere. I located an all-caps menu font around 153400, but have combed the rom several times and (despite the abundance of uncompressed graphics) haven't had any luck uncovering another. Might this be hidden via some weird Genesis compression, or am I just missing something?
