Hello everyone,

Long time lurker, 5th time poster. My first 3 posts were in the excellent FFIV-Ultima thread in the personal project section. 8-Bit-Fan's work there is really bringing me back to the smell of my SNES and the basement I played it in during the early 1990s in rural South Dakota. The excitement of going to the video mania in Sioux falls, all the SNES and NES carts flattened and laminated, sitting in bins ready to be flipped through and rented. You even got a token to spin a slot machine (which would net you free rentals if you won, actually nailed it one time for a cash prize but couldn't accept it because I was 7, so got 10 free rentals).

I remember the first time playing FFIV, watching the redwings fly through the sky, the music, I can remember the way the air tasted. Then memory flashes to the party screen with Tellah, Cid, Yang and Cecil in the tower of Babil and waking up at like 4am before school on Monday (they day the game had to go back) to play it more.

It's a feeling I thought I'd never get to feel again (as I never managed to get a physical copy), but then I found emulation a few years later. Fast forward 25 years and I am in my early 30s, and found myself with that feeling all over again playing some of the amazing work on this forum. We have an opportunity no generation before us really does, to take the works we enjoyed and to make them even better!

(You could try with the Beatles music or Van Gogh's art, but something in that form isn't really conducive to being "enhanced").

Somewhat long intro I suppose, but I truly wanted you random strangers to know that your work helps me achieve a level of child like excitement that is rare for any adult to feel.

I hope to get the opportunity to sample and support some other works here in the future.

Agreed. The Woolsey style is the best for me.

For all of it's limitations in retrospect, at the time there was a certain charm to Ted Woolsey's work in the translations.

Hey chillyfeez!
Thanks so much for the input! Yeah, I wanted to make the game 'fun', and not really make it a challenge until 2/3 into the game...but now that I've watched some others play it I might have gone too far in a few sections in the very last stretch of the game. I'm about to push out another update that relieves some of the pressure of the last segment including an additional save point. To avoid spoiling it, I'll ask you about what you think when you get there. ;)

Btw, if Yang hasn't blown up yet in your run, I'm pushing out an updated that'll make coming down from Babil less tedious. Stay tuned! ;)

Ok, the update just got posted. It's now version 1.20.
Please update your rom to this version when you all continue playing. Saves should work without problems.

Cheers!

Ok yeah, the AI is pretty tough, still working on whipping him.

Question below (spoilered)

Curious just how rare you made the chicken knife? I have killed the evil masks on the floors before the AI for hours now (last count 112 kills). Is this just insanely bad luck, or was it intended to be this hard to attain? (If so, any chance you might be willing to tone that rarity down just a bit?). I did a second test (from another machine later this evening), 2 hours of evil masks (another 60-70), no chicken knife. Just lunar curtains.

Also curious if you added code that prevents you from attaining more than one pink tail? I noticed subsequent drops from Pink Flan after I got the first tail/adamant armor was Dry Ether or Elixir. Your damn evil, level scaling, robot of murder is making me farm like never before (I love it!)  Appreciate the info sir

Hey 8-bit;

Been playing the game (just got Fusoya) *correction, at CPU fight in Giant (my post still shows awaiting approval from mods, stinks to be new I guess :-), you did a wonderful job. I tried to go into it without reading any spoilers and it didn't occur to me until I got the airship that the hovercraft from Damcyan could be used to.. something something earlier something. That was really clever; wish I saw that right after I got the craft; next playthrough.

So want to reiterate what another user said above, there is a potentially annoying bug floating around with the Fat Chocobo. The issue here (especially with the dwarf castle) is in the dark world you have no other way to get to that overgrown pigeon. It will just bring up Namingway Dialog; (I will post a picture when I have a chance). I believe this also happened at another location in the light world but I can't confirm it.

Where this is an issue is, you start having to make painful what to keep decisions in your inventory. I found myself immediately discarding the new 1 time use spell items and some gears to make room for chest stuff. Now, I made it through no problem, and some people aren't as pack rat like as I am so may not be as big of an issue.

There is a really easy way to solve this though: Make whistles available at the Dwarf castle item shop for a reasonable price (maybe 5000gp)?

Or could just leave it be and call it "inventory challenge mode" for the dark world  :'(

Again; awesome!  :woot!:  Do you happen to have a bestiary somewhere of the changes you made to mobs? Specifically because Edge steal doesn't seem to indicate a difference between "Failed to Steal" and "Enemy doesn't have anything". So it's hard to tell if it's worth repeatedly using it trying to decide if an enemy has something (or does every enemy have a stealable item? Not familiar with this mechanic in FFIV)?

Hey 8-bit,

Just logged in to say thanks for your hard work. Just patched up a copy of the rom and about to push it over to my makeshift portable SNES (Old Note II, permanently attached to a bluetooth gamepad haha). I recently finished playing DQ11 and it made me long for my favorite JRPG (FF4). The problem is, I had beaten it in all it's forms easily 50 times.

Thankfully, I stumbled onto an article on randomizers, which led to some searches, and ended up here on Really excited to try out your patch and will let you know if I encounter any bugs.

So glad there is a community of us FF4 fans who are still taking this masterpiece and finding new ways to tell stories and have fun with it.
