Thanks for the tip! And no, I've been searching. Not much on the web, except the atlas, but that seems false or not enough.... guess i'm going the hard way! Do you guys have any solid recommendations for sound debugging/logging? One you may have experience in is ideal. I understand sound has its own processor

Newcomer's Board / Custom music in dkc for snes!

I already submit a decent troll hack (DKDC), my next desire is to import custom music. I am working with Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, 1.0. I am very new to sound editing in games, but I stumbled on a thread on SMWCentral that told me I needed a txt version of a midi. I got one, now what do I do with it?

I am quite experienced with hex and ASM hacking. My next step is graphics and music. My game of choice is Donkey Kong Country, U, 1.0, SNES. Does anyone have any tips? I am currently producing a DKC hack and would love to edit graphics/music. Ideas?

Newcomer's Board / Re: Objects in RAM
« on: September 23, 2017, 05:26:34 pm »
Thank you for replying in depth! I am already a hacker of sorts. I haven't publically released any yet however. Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, yes. And I DO mean loading in RAM.

Objects are a bit of a tricky thing... I could say sprites, but not only sprites are included in that list. Level exits are part of the list, and you can't render that! That list includes:
-Enemies
-Barrels
-Bonuses
-Invisible walls
-Scripts/sets of objects

Currently I'm working on an extremely basic hack that morphs and moves objects. The whole set of objects is loaded at once on level load, so it is quite easy to edit the rom.

My end goal is to make the exit appear after all the kong letters are collected. There is a RAM value for that. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cpgw9Y73WL7vmUOfnK21utcTQ7sUeOZu4874buAmPf0/edit#gid=0 The kong letters I mean.

BTW, I am using no tools, just a simple hex editor AND geiger's snes9x debugger.

Can anyone please explain to me HOW objects are loaded into RAM (or point me to the right document)? My game is DKC. I know where the objects are in ROM, but I would like to be able to change them at runtime.

Personal Projects / Re: DKC Rearranged!

The music I got from a Youtube vid. I ripped it off :) The terrain is 100% the same, which is why it looks so similar. It is not so much a "hack" as it is a rearrangement.

Hey guys, I'm working on a fresh new DKC hack. I already have the vertical levels done, only 3 other levels done. I started out of order. I did Capers first and recently finished TuT. This hack is meant for speedrunners. There'll be written references and MAY be some mandatory glitches. Brush up on superjumps guys  ;) Also important to note I am doing everything in a text editor. I started with Notepad++ and recently switched to Frhed. I like the challenge :) I am ONLY moving around entities and changing text. Nothing with terrain.

Awww the challenge is done. It is boring now. Why can't there be more water levels??

***NOTE***
Bananas are unchanged too

You may ask why I don't use DKCRE. Honestly? That changes the game too much. I am minimalist. And it is a bit too laggy for me. Also, I can't do a specific trick in DKCRE, which is my main reason for not using it.

Um, well I want to SHARE my hack so others can play it

I have a simple hack idea.... speedrunners of dkc are commonly asked to collect all the kong letters... so, what about a hack that hides the trigger for the exit to a level until you find all kong letters? so that way you have to find them all

Again, if you run windows you can play almost any game mirrored, just use the program that mirrors a portion of the screen. I forgot what the name is now, but google is your friend.

Again, I want something that can be run on console :P Also, that is fine for ME but for distribution? i don't think so

didn't someone recently make this for donkey kong country..?

...yup: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=24043.0

yes and no. It is not a TRUE reverse as you start at the end of levels and still run right. What I want to do is still start at the beginning but work my way left.

Is it possible to flip horizontally the output of a ROM? I want to make a ROM hack that is mirrored....  I realize I will have to swap left and right too... but is this possible? Seems relatively easy

I'm currently making a TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedrun) of the DKC1 hack "Kremling's Revenge" by Preposterify. Is he still available? I would LOVE to contact him and ask him some questions.

Newcomer's Board / Re: Lua?
« on: December 22, 2016, 10:47:04 am »
Various ways but likely there will be a value that corresponds to the level in RAM somewhere and changes with the level.

Yes, I have minor experience with TASing and there exists an overall level frame counter, so I could just use that. Listen guys, I'm EXTREMELY new to hacking. This is my first one. I basically wanted to make a timer hack for in-game, withOUT lua, so it could ultimately be done on console.
