ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Animating Tiles in SMB1
« on: September 23, 2014, 01:24:29 am »
This is a patch that will give you animation for SMB1. It gives you 4 pages of tile and sprite graphics.

You will need to expand the rom yourself, the ordering for pages goes: [Sprite][Tile][Sprite][Tile][Sprite][Tile][Sprite][Tile]

The patch uses the code-space of where the palette animation for coins was, so you'll need to recreate that in your 4 pages of animation.

'daiz made this patch years ago. Heh.

Personal Projects / [SMB3 Hack] Royal Flush - Princess Sidestory

Royal Flush - Princess Sidestory

So, this hack was born out of wanting to do something with the SMB3 disassembly. Unfortunately as I get older I find that I have less time for hobbies, and also more of a desire to work with things from the ground up.

So more than likely this is the last big (yeah, like one world is big :v) ROM-hack I'm going to do. I did have fun though, and creating the new power-ups was a blast!

So gameplay wise: Hold UP/DOWN while you have your BOMB POWERUP. If you shoot with it held up or down, the bomb will arc higher or lower. You can also do this while jumping.

PS: The special 'shrooms were hacks of the unused stage card sprites. If you are using the level editor that comes with the disassembly, you can edit the names in the XML file for easy access.

You should also edit the XML file to enable the invisible blue P-Switch coins, as they are not available by default for some reason.

Anyway, I hope people enjoy the hack and have fun!

You may want to consider changing the name, as http://smwc.hostzi.com/SMWiki/wiki/Super_Mario_Odyssey.html has been known as a SMW hack for a long time. It'll be confusing if someone wants to look up your hack.

Including: Mario Adventure, Zelda Parallel Worlds, and The Treasure of Rudras translation.

Just thought I should let everyone know, just in case they were not aware of people using their work. Romhacking is on grey ground as it is.

I'm pretty sure it was in this thread. And something like "Go! Go! Goemon!" would work fine. Or something along those lines.

And hell, if no one can find an acceptable wording for "Ganbare!" in English, then calling it "Mystical Ninja Goemon" would also be acceptable.

Anything is better than leaving random Japanese words in. >_>

~DS

It's a losing battle DarknessSavior, even if there was games that decided to just drop ganbare.

Hey! I gave you that table file a while ago, you can just load it and search normally.

You should read the threads that you make before! LOOK! It even tells you how to re-point strings that are too long!

You asked the same question on the pokecommunity too! With the same answer.

I'll go grumble in a corner now...

The Pokemon games use uncompressed strings. And they are easy to repoint and work with.

Here is a table file:
Code: [Select]

FA=|nb|
FB=|nb2|
FC=|FC|
FD=|FD|
FE=|br|
FF=|end|

If you load this, you should be able to see any string you search for. To repoint a string, say this guy:

First, search for his string in a hex editor, I use WINDHEX, so I can load a table and search in ASCII characters directly. When I look for it, I find it at 0x17d80d

Now, saw there was not enough room for this string, first I need to find the pointer to it, to do that, you take the bytes, and reverse the order. So 0x17d80d -> [17] [D8] [0D] becomes [0d] [d8] [17], we then add an [08] to the end.

So, [0d] [d8] [17] [08] (0DD81708) is what we search for! After searching, we find it at 0x165831. Keep note of this.

Now, we just need to find some free space. There's about 3MB of free space floating around for anyone to use, just look around 0x800000. So i'll just use that.

So, I insert/write my new text into that slot.

Now, we just convert 0x800000 into a pointer the same way we did the old text: [80] [00] [00] -> [00] [00] [80] [08] adding [08] to the end like normal.

Now we go back to the first text pointer we found: 0DD81708 at 0x165831, remember? and replace that pointer (0DD81708) with our new one (00008008).

FE=|br|, is the first linebreak you make, then you use FB=|nb2|, for each line after in the same box. To make a new box appear, you use FA=|nb|. Always have a [FF] at the end to terminate the string.

It might just be me, but it seems that on the project page the download is linking back to the project page and not to the file.

Did you patch it onto a bad rom? (Was it PRG0?) I had a few people test the IPS patch and they had no problems. :s

If anyone else comes across this problem let me know!

Edit: Confirmed, anyone who has crashing problems patched the file to PRG1 and not PRG0 like the readme states. If you want to see the full ending (and in the proper palettes!) please patch the IPS file over a PRG0 SMB3 Rom.

Ah, it seems that I was forgetful. "Present Panic - A Princess Adventure" is the name of the hack.

At least I never forgot to include the link. That would of been a terrible mistake.

I disagree with your points, and I stand by the fact that you've moved things from broken to tedium. Your hack does have an audience though, so it's only a difference of opinion.

In any case, I only brought up the current LP thread because it is the most likely one to finish the hack, and with someone who somewhat enjoys FFT1.3. I figure that anyone who may skip your hack can at least read about it.

V: As to not clutter up the thread, I disagree that this is hard in the rewarding sense.

I'll just leave this here:

It's because other hacks aren't unfair bullshit hard. He calls them lolpatches.

I know this from the youtube comments of his favorite unwinnable battle getting won and it wasn't in a way he intended (none has been proven to exist).

I recommend we refer to the unwinnable fight as Absolute Virtue 1.3 or some variant thereof because at least this guy isn't alone in this behavior.

HA! I remember that video. He threw a temper tantrum over it and said the guy cheated, even though he used totally legit means to win.

As I recall, in the version released after that, he straight up made the enemy take 0 damage from everything. Because god forbid someone proves him wrong. The oceans will dry up if that happens. Just imagine the poor lil' fishies flopping around. That's a huge burden for any one man to bear.

Also, it should work on real hardware.

Programming / Re: Inquiry into supporting PNG via a faux SNES 'chip'
« on: December 02, 2011, 02:43:37 pm »
I think you may be confusing things here Kiy. Sure emulators support taking PNG screenshots, but that's not part of the emulation itself, it's part of the interface.

It would be like saying that the SNES should be able to load savestates because the emulator supports it.

I would like to note, KaioShin, that sometimes even the Bureaucratic process needs to go above and beyond the set rules in order to make things easier. The Administration could of stepped in and added a screenshot.

Also, "Just a hardwired par-code cheat" indeed. I'm sure there are no "fix" patches on this site that could fall in that category, and the was accusation made without poking the file itself.

In any case, it's not nice to see a great resource get so wrapped up in process that it becomes a hassle to support/submit.

Well, the long answer for 2 is "Yes" but it's a yes that will take years of hard work and practice to make.

You might want to check the pokecommunity tutorial forum for scripting help.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha no.
That shit always leads to cliques and abuse.

Yeah, I agree. Also, if it's not programed well, you can always <img src="http://URL.TO.PLUS.KARMA/vote.php?K=Good"> :P

Glad you enjoy the hack everyone, Happy Holidays!

Oh, please. Those can be defeated by referer-checking.

What's that Dwedit? I can't hear you over all the peaches.

Besides, Toadette obviously decided to dress warp and tuck in her long hair for the cold winter climate.

In all honesty though, that was a dick move Dwedit. Not in the holiday spirit at all.
