Update By: Supper

A long-overdue English translation for the second game in the Madou Monogatari (Sorcery Saga) series has been released!

Arle Nadja, last seen trying to graduate from kindergarten in the first Madou Monogatari, is now sixteen years old. As she journeys to the distant Ancient Magic School to study, a mysterious man with a remarkable proclivity for unintentional innuendo knocks her out and throws her in a dungeon! Arle must now use all her magic skills to escape and continue her quest to become the most powerful magician in the world.

The Madou Monogatari games are a series of dungeon crawlers by Compile, originally released for Japanese computers and later ported to many other platforms. They're known for their distinct style of magic-oriented combat, with no HP or MP meters, individually-crafted attacks for every enemy, and prolific use of voice samples. They should also look very familiar to Puyo Puyo players – Puyo Puyo began as a spinoff of Madou Monogatari and imported most of its original cast from the series.

This patch is for the Sega Game Gear port of the game, which features somewhat different gameplay and dungeons from the original computer versions. Despite the Puyo Puyo connection and a solid reputation as a fun title, this marks the first English translation of the game, almost exactly 25 years after this version's original release.

This patch was the work of TheMajinZenki (translation), Supper (hacking), cccmar (editing and testing), filler (original script dump), and Xanathis (testing). Special thanks goes to filler and Kingofcrusher for their translation patch for the first Madou Monogatari, whose font was reused for this patch.

Thank you guys for the translation.
Is there a chance to see the translation of Madou Monogatari on Mega Drive?

Personally I think it's worth doing, since the story seems to be different, and the battle system also isn't quite the same as in most other ports. There were quite a few versions of the first game, and each one of them seems to be different from the others in some aspects.

Another GG translation bites the dust.

What about making an addendum patch for the first GG Madou Monogatari game? Basically changing the title screen to match your naming convention, but I also recall that the credits were never hacked. So there would be that as well.

For what it's worth, I'd also dumped a script for that Mega Drive version a while ago and TheMajinZenki expressed an interest in it recently. (cccmar knows this, I'm just explaining for the benefit of the public.)

:woot!:

I can't speak for Kingofcrusher but I'm on board with that. At the time the Sorcery Saga game was not yet out for the PS Vita, so there was no official localization of the title. I probably preferred a transliteration in order to stay with what fans were used to. EDIT: FYI: EvilJagaGenius expressed an interest in doing this in another thread.

I also forgot to mention, thanks for taking my suggestion about retaining the font from the patch of the first game. I appreciate the sense of continuity.

Omg! I didn't realize anyone was working on this game. And here I was planning on eventually attempting it after I finish my current project, lol. I'm playing through this game as soon as possible now. I absolutely adored the first one. Thank you guys so much for translating this!

Do you guys plan on translating any of the other games like 3, Doki Doki Vacation, or the Mega Drive stuff?

I think I can answer this question - there are definitely plans to translate the Game Gear games, at the very least, since they're the only console ports of MM 3 and A (Doki Doki Vacation). They also happen to be some of the last untranslated GG RPGs, so we'd like to knock them off the list. Can't tell you how long it's gonna take though, since it depends on a variety of factors, but the plan remains the same regardless.

FWIW: I'm still working on the script translation for MMA. It's currently about 36% done.

That's fantastic to hear! I guess that means my friends and I have something to look forward to! So happy to see others able to appreciate these games, too.
