Super Mario Bros Co-Op - Glitch World
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cq21p963nmsuc3j/Super%20Mario%20Bros.%20Co-Op%20-%20Glitch%20World.ips.zip?dl=1
This is just a hilarious mistake from when I tried to mod the Two Player Hack of SMB1. Play co-op as Mario and Luigi in random levels with strange glitches such as walking through walls. Have that reset button prepared tho. Some levels are impossible to beat due to the randomness of this mistake of a hack.

not really a hack per-se but if my memory serves me, FF9 on ps1 has natively support for 2 players (decide controller for characters in combat.) i always thought it was pretty cool since it's not really the kind of game you'd think of playing with 2 people.

I don't know about FF9, but FF IV definitely does have that option (on PS1). And there are hacks to add this to FF III: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1797/ and FF V: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2122/.
Nice to see this get some attention. I really love these hacks as well and I will create some myself too. I'll make a personal projects topic once I've made some progress.
BTW: Secret of Evermore is in the NES section. ;)
-
This is a great idea. I didn't even know anyone had done a 2 player mod before, let alone a dozen or so. I'm actually curious to know what steps were taken to achieve some of these. I should investigate and think about doing one myself. :D
But anyone who suggests Final Fight SNES can GTFO, just play the Sega CD or arcade versions. ;)

That's very insensitive towards the SNES gamers who really want to play Final Fight on their console in multiplayer. Not everyone is interested in playing on PC, obtaining another version or getting new hardware. :P

1. My PC is plugged into my TV, so it makes little difference to me.
2. Obtaining? You mean finding a second-hand physical copy? If that's the case, what use is a patch?
3. The SNES came out almost 30 years ago, I think you'll be okay getting some new hardware. ;)
Hey, if someone else wants to do it then be my guest, but I'd rather do something more unique.

1. It's not about you(r TV), but those other gamers who like to play on an actual SNES (Classic).
2. The point is that not everyone will be interested in getting another version. They'd rather see a rom hack for the version they own. Despite its shortcomings compared some of the other versions, Final Fight SNES is well-loved.
3. Just because you have access to newer hardware doesn't mean that you have the hardware you can or want to play a certain game on.

Cool. I'd love to see it.

Thanks, fixed it!

Wasn't there a two-player hack for SM64? Or was that never finished? (Or maybe I'm thinking of Galaxy?)
-
So we can count this as well?

I already mentioned that and the FF V one. ;)

Any news on smb2 or smb3 co op?
There is this: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=28170
Not the kind of co-op I'd be interested in, but it's something.
-
I added: Super Mario Bros. 3 (Player two controls a Cheep Cheep)
https://github.com/ErikHK/smb32p
-
Awesome list thank you!! :woot!:
...surprised no one's done one for Double Dragon(NES) yet...
-
Added Battle City Mario to the list.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4568/
-
I recently found this hack: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4336/
I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like a decent alternative multiplayer hack.
-
there is a hack that lets you play Story mode in co-op splitscreen on Jet Force Gemini
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/711/
it is a little cumbersome to set up, and is NOT just a simple patch tho
ps: i love this list, maybe co-op centered hacks should have their own searchable category, (not just "improvement")
-
Added the 4 player hack of Ice Climber.
-
You should check out the posts above you.

All taken care of now! For some kind i missed them.

Added "Pipe Plumber" a 4 player hack of Ice Climber to the list.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4744/ (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4744/)
-
This may not meet your criteria, since it expands upon the multiplayer capabilities already present in the game rather than adding more players: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/414/
I've considered making a four-player Tournament Mode hack but have other projects that I'd like to finish first.
-
I think Luigis Mansion has a 2 player hack.

Nah, people have the rights to enjoy Final Fight in their favorite platform. It doesn't matter if it is from 30 years ago, or why would translations even exist? People should just learn japanese and new languages, under that mindset.
Besides, the SNES 2 player hack was done already (by two different programmers at almost the same time, no less), it is not finished yet. There is also the Final Fight 3 players hack for the arcade board.
-
Anybody know how to run "Super Mario Bros. - Two Players Hack" on Nes classic mini?
Xdelta is not working... but hacks of the hack like "Super Princess Sis - Two Drunk Princess (Two Players Hack)" works fine cause its .ips.
Same thing with "DuckTales 2 - Two Players Hack"
Thanks!

My point, that maybe got lost somewhat, is that if you want to play Final Fight with two players, the arcade and Sega CD versions are sitting there and are both arguably better than the SNES in every other respect, too. Your comparison with translations isn't entirely accurate: if a game was localised from Japanese to English, I would very much rank that as a low priority. It's not a case of saying "why would translations exist", it's a case that if you're going to go to the huge effort to translate a game, maybe do one that hasn't already been translated. Therefore, if you're going to make an effort to hack a two-player mod, maybe do one that doesn't already have an even better version available on two different platforms (and yes, a SNES classic is still an emulator, so the 'original hardware' argument doesn't work either).
Anyway, the three-player arcade mod IS a great idea, since that's unique. Honestly, people can hack whatever the hell they want, there's no need to get annoyed about my opinion. :D

Hey, i've created an account just to ask this question: Has anyone ever made a legend of zelda 2 player hack? i mean the nes version.
-
Hey, i've created an account just to ask this question: Has anyone ever made a legend of zelda 2 player hack? i mean the nes version.
Well... kinda. It's not really a hack and it's not really two player. But it's a lua script that allows two players to share inventory.
So the closest thing would be this: https://mcclure.github.io/emu-coop/ (https://mcclure.github.io/emu-coop/)

Rock n' Roll Racing Hack v16 has 3 players co-op mode via emulators/netplay. And 4-6 players competitive tournament modes.
-
Added
Battletoads & Double Dragon 4 players (NES)
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3980/
For some reason this hack escaped me. And I see that there's a update in the submission queue.
-
Did not see that one on the list. Just the mini game is multiplayer but you can choose it from the start menu.
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4532/
-
Z22: The Adventure of Link and Lonk (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5243/)
It also comes with a difficulty selection based on the save file you choose to play.

I added The Adventure of Link and Lonk to the list. Wow, multiplayer co-op Zelda! Good job. Does one dare to hope on the original Zelda getting the same treatment?
-
Great list, I'm always looking for more multiplayer versions of games.
-
Me and a friend really enjoyed Link and Lonk. We did however encounter some trouble when the medicine had disappear when we went to pick it up. Also a collected key disappeared. There is a vid of it if the developer sees this message and wants to look into it.
-
Very cool things! I wonder what other multiplayer hacks are possible?

I added:
Final Fantasy III coop 2 player hack (NES) <

I don´t know why I did not include it before. Anyways, I´ve been away for half a year or so. Anyone seen some new co-op hacks on any platform?

Theres been a few hacks of the Super Mario Bros. Two Player Edition hack if I can remember right, but I'm not sure if those count.

If they are any good (and I can find them) they could count.
Anyways, anyone know a good emulator for 4-player NES games?
I would like to stream 4player hacks using PARSEC but I can not get any emulator to work properly. Or is there another way to play 4 players online?
Any ideas?
-
There are several ways to play online. I use Mednafen and Nestopia emulators.

Yeah, but 4 player tho?

4 players.

I'll re-post this as well here, I stumbled on these on youtube. 2 players hack for Shatterhand and Mighty Final Fight (different from the one available here, it's 2 players coop against enemies)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOMbEaotTRU&t=2h12m
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKFaV9Nwh_g&t=23m35s
I just can't find the hacks anywhere for download.
-
Hello, can anyone help me find this Ocarina of time local multiplayer hack?
Its called Ocarina of Time 4 Swords.
When I google, all I see is 4 Swords Arena Edition, which makes the camera angle overhead, I have no interest in that.
Here's video of the game:

a crazy idea mine is 2 players for BATMAN RETURNS SNES!!! ;D
-
Hello there, I've been trying Zelda II - Adventure of Link 2 player co op.
Whenever there's enemies on screen, the game slows down incredibly. I've seen people on Youtube play it without slowdown. Other games and NES ROMs have no slowdown at all. Any tips?
OS: Windows 10
RAM: 16 GB RAM
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700k CPU @ 4.20 GHz
Tried Retroarch with NEStopia Core
Tried Higan

I'd love a 2 players hack but for Batman Returns... on NES. The crazy thing is the game seems to be heavily based on TMNT3, by that I mean it seems obvious to me they looked at how things were done in TMNT3 for heavy "inspiration" and faster dev time; and TMNT3 does have a 2 player mode.

Did you try overclocking? Like NesDraug said Mesen should be able to do that, so should FCEUX. For instance in FCEUX go to config->timing, click on Overclocking and set both setting to 50 or so. Notice that it says "old PPU" only, some games do not support this overclocking, you'll notice if you see graphical issues. The only games I'd had issues with so far were Natsume games.
-
Thanks for the advice, never heard of Mesen before, its great!

Mario64 has "mario64 online"
Pikminband pikmin2 have coop mods and have you thought of adding pc games to your list aswell?
