You're going to have to be more specific about what you mean.

I remember a few years ago someone else, I believe his name was Chaos Rush, was working on expanding the names in FF2 but hit major roadblocks with changing the battle menus, suggesting major ASM work would be needed to properly expand the menus.

It just so happens that I'm playing the Final Fantasy II NES English prototype these days, and yeah I've run into the same issue.

But I also played Dawn of Souls on GBA, so I just compare the two.

For example:

In the example above, the way the NES MingWu and GBA Minwu have their spells listed is exactly the same.

NES Shld = GBA Barrier = Will only protect against randomly chosen specific status ailments and elements.

NES Fog = GBA Protect = Increase "ABSORB" which is physical defense.

NES Lose = GBA Fog = I guess a mix-up on the developer's end, what is this I don't even....

You may try here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/563414-final-fantasy-ii/faqs

I skimmed trough the files but it seem they doesn't use that translation.
Have you thought about different translation? Or more contemporary version (like PSP)?

IIRC, in Mysidia they pretty much sell almost all the spells in the game in that town.

If you could get a save file of the game where you are in Mysidia in both the NES and modern version(s), you can compare the spells in Mysidia to each other.
