Title: The BIG list of randomizers!!
Post by: SmashManiac on August 27, 2016, 09:54:57 pm
The BIG list of randomizers is now officially on my blog (https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/).

The new URL is: https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/ (https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/)

Why? Because it became too long to fit in this post!

Thank you so much for everyone's support, and keep posting those randomizers! I will continue to post in this thread regularly with all new changes.

Obligatory one for Doom. (http://oblige.sourceforge.net/)
Bonus!  Have a roguelike-style weapon mod to go with it. (http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=37044)

I added the Super Mario World randomizer to the list. Thanks for sharing Mattrizzle! It looks pretty sweet!

The Doom one (OBLIGE) was already on the list.

Just stumbled on a Zelda II: The Adventure of Link randomizer! It's now on the list!

Actually mzxrules, your OoT randomizer is what partially motivated me to create this list, since I felt it was a shame that it was lost on an old random forum thread. ;)

The ones that are mostly complete should be hosted here. Someone should work on that.

Actually, this thread pre-dates that wiki by a few days, so I'm the original. 8)

That said, thanks for sharing it! I'm going to contact its administrator so we can combine our efforts.

In the meantime, I'm adding in this list randomizers listed on it that I've been missing:
- Dragon Quest 4
- EarthBound
- Final Fantasy
- Final Fantasy III
- Final Fantasy V (abyssonym)
- Mega Man Battle Network 3
- Mega Man X
- Metroid Prime
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
- NES Open Tournament Golf
- Pokémon Red (Sanqui)
- Pokémon Trading Card Game
- Shining Force II
- Super Mario RPG
- Telefang Power Version

Nice!

Is there a version of Shining Force II scrambler that doesn't change the palettes and music?

Here's one for Guardian Legend: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1145/

Thanks a lot PresidentLeever! I'm adding The Guardian Legend to the list! :) However, it seems that the RHDN page is hosting a really old version, so I'm going to link to the latest version even though it's behind a registration wall. As MathUser2929 pointed out, it would be great if someone took the time to add all these randomizers to RHDN, and I don't have the time to do so myself.

Questions or suggestions about specific randomizers should be redirected to the original authors. I'm just compiling them.

Hey SmashManiac,

I actually made this list back in January/February and have been updating it since then:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rXgXxS1W9AaEhhpxfGjNyLuxC_P7Xa3LBr9jluWUlR0/edit#gid=0

A couple of people that I talk to frequently about randomizers decided to make that wiki page based on this list so that it could incorporate all of the advantages that a webpage/wiki has.  I found your thread here at the same time and have been meaning to post here to try to consolidate efforts, but I'm busy/lazy, and the number of new entries and a few decisions to be made daunt me a bit.  Anyway, I plan on just updating my list based on the new things you have listed here, and then I'll let them know that the wiki needs updating.  (I did try to point them in this direction before, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.  Oh well.)

If any of you are on the speedrunslive IRC, you can also come to #random for discussion.

I appreciate your efforts and all of the new things you found.

Edit:  I could have sworn you had other Mega Man games listed before, like maybe a Mega Man 2 randomizer by someone other than Duckfist.  Maybe I'm just imagining things.  Anyway, I have my list mostly updated now.  I'm sure the wiki will be updated shortly in kind.

Edit 2:  I thought the wiki was missing some things, but it looks like the lists are in agreement now.  Perhaps it was just all recently added, but I thought I remembered seeing more things here previously that I don't see now.  Again, I'm probably misremembering.

Thanks a lot! Your efforts are also very appreciated!

I usually don't hang out on IRC, but I might drop in that channel in the near future to see how things look like there. ;)

Good catch! I erroneously deleted the Endless hacks for Mega Man 2-3-4-5. I'm putting them back now!

I'm still seeing a few things that I can't find on the wiki, like Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave, and Sanqui's Pokémon TCG and Telefang Power randomizers. There might be more.

This list is freakin' amazing. I didn't know most of the games on this list even had randomizers, so thanks for compiling it Smashmaniac!

I've been playing around with the OoT Randomizer a bit on PJ64. Currently trying to get the Wii version installed on my softmodded Wii, but so far Wad Manager just gives me error messages. Hopefully I can get 'er working so I can play this beast with a Classic Controller!

Adding a few more games:
- Sven Co-op (corruptor)
- Half-Life 2 (corruptor)
- Team Fortress 2
- Yoshi's Island (corruptor)

About the "corruptor" note: After some thought, I came to the conclusion that it didn't make much sense to exclude assets-only randomizers and game-specific corruptors from the list, as long as they're mostly stable and clearly identified.

However, I'm not sure where to draw the line for non-game-specific corruptors with randomization. On one extreme there's the Real-Time Corruptor (http://redscientist.com/#/rtcorruptormod) which only works for specific video game consoles. On the other extreme there corruptors that works on any kind of file and don't contain video game-specific features like Erosion (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/corruptutil/erosion.html). And then there's the middle ground like the ROM Corruptor 5.999 (http://www.dwedit.org/townedit/html/archives.html). In all cases, crashes are almost guaranteed, and the results are not much different from non-game-specific corruptors without randomization like NoChaos (http://jathys.zophar.net/other/index.html) and the Vinesauce ROM Corruptor (http://corruptedbytes.com/the-vinesauce-rom-corruptor/). For now I'm considering excluding them altogether due to the low-level of randomness, but I'd like to have people's opinions on the matter.

By the way, thanks Bahamut ZERO for your kind words! :) I suggest you pair your Wii Remote to your PC via Bluetooth if you still have issues with your Wii; that's what I do to play retro games myself.
Title: Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!

I think I'll leave the corruptors off my list for now.  I don't know exactly what they do, but the fact that they frequently lead to crashes and probably other unplayable results makes them feel not worth advertising in the same medium.  I will add Team Fortress 2 and the Mega Man games to my list.  I also remembered one more that I just added that you don't have.  There's a newly created item randomizer for Ocarina of Time; it looks like it probably has a lot of work to go yet.  Link here:  https://www.speedrun.com/oot/thread/6w905/1#6sccj

Thanks everyone! :)

Added from this thread and the Wiki:
- Ocarina of Time (another one)
- Pokémon Stadium
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Terraria

By the way, I found a few more older randomizers for Pokémon and Fire Emblem that I suspect deprecated. I will investigate them before adding them to the list.

I know that there were other Pokemon randomizers, but I think that the ones I have listed are the most commonly used (and possibly the best) ones.  If you find that the other Pokemon randomizers add something beyond the ones on the list, can you give some details?  I think I have to add Terraria to my list.

I wanted to know how true randomness is generated in video games or technology period. If I recall, it has something to do with chaos theory and quantum stuff, something about true indeterminism not existing in digital technology because it is linear, or at least indeterminism as we perceive it in the external world.

Here's another kind of Doom randomizer: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=47980

What this does is instead of randomizing the maps it randomizes the monsters, every one of them is assigned a tier color.  Every color has a set spawn percent and strength, with many being boss-level mons easily.  Monster randomizers are everywhere but this one is probably the most fun and compatible with things (and of course, you can run this with Oblige maps as well as any other mod).

Oh, and Oblige got updated in a very big way.
Title: Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!
Post by: SmashManiac on October 02, 2016, 07:14:29 pm
I made a few changes to the list.

First, I added a brand new id Software section, which includes a bunch of new randomizers in it (including a No Man's Sky parody) and updated information about OBLIGE. The games are:
- Ultimate Doom
- Doom II
- Final Doom
- Samsara (unofficial Doom mod)
- Heretic
- Hexen
- Quake
- Quake II

Second, I also added a new randomizer for Gensokyo no Nazo that was listed on the Wiki.

And finally, I added a Deprecated section with old Doom, Fire Emblem and Pokémon randomizers that weren't on the list before. I also moved Catastrophe's Dragon Quest and Sanqui's Pokémon Red randomizers in that section, since I believe almost all of their features are included in the other ones. Please let me know if I made a mistake or if you believe another randomizer should be moved there, in particular for the Doom randomizers since I'm not familiar with Doom modding.

Dr. Jeckidy: What you are asking is unrelated to this thread. For more information, you should research RNG.

EDIT: Almost forgot to add the Reelism mod for Doom II in the list. This is now fixed.

EDIT 2: Added the Mother 3 randomizer that was just published on the front page. Also, I'm going to rethink the id Software section. It's kind of a mess right now, and the fact that I know nothing about Doom modding doesn't help. I'm open to suggestions.

More awesome randomizers:
- Borderlands 2
- EarthBound Beginnings
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

More corruptor randomizers:
- Super Mario 64
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

More depredated randomizers:
- EarthBound

Big thanks to PBRGamer for continuing to update the wiki with fresh stuff!

EDIT: Clarified supported versions for the Mega Man Battle Network games, and renamed the Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem games to their official modern titles.

EDIT 2: Added a new Super Mario Bros. 3 randomizer, and moved the old one as deprecated.

Thanks Kaltenborn! You had a few games I was missing, which I had added in the list:
- Pokémon Colosseum
- Super Mario Bros.

Also, I realized that the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes randomizer was merged with the Metroid Prime randomizer, so I merged the entries as well.

I joined the discord channel, thanks jkoper!

- Super Metroid (deprecated)

Thanks to Kaltenborn for the findings!

EDIT: Added Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories to the list!

EDIT 2: I was let known of a Paper Mario randomizer, but I've seen a few reports that it's not working. I tentatively added it to the list with a note.

I tried the Pokemon TCG randomizer in this thread. After completing the randomized version, I wasn't really impressed with it as all it really did was shuffle the decks players use. So for example, you would go to the rock gym and play someone with a psychic deck, instead of a deck based around rock pokemon.

I found this one recently that randomizes the card data: https://github.com/xCrystal/TCGRandomizer#tcgrandomizer

I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like more of what I was expecting, although the original author has stopped working on it.

Thanks a lot Lance, I've added the new Pokémon TCG card randomizer to the list!

I suggest you try combining both the card randomizer with the deck randomizer for your next playthrough. ;)

EDIT: The Guardian Legends randomizer is no longer behind a registration wall! The author kindly uploaded the latest version on RHDN after I asked him for a public link. The list has been updated accordingly.

Added two Hitman randomizers to the list. Although they do not actually alter the games, they generate a random set of additional requirements for each mission. I decided to include them despite the lack of in-game enforcement because they still affect gameplay.

Let me know if you also find passive randomizers like this.

It may be useful to either sticky this thread or else move the list to the Data Crystal for posterity. Fantastic thread.

EDIT: The Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave hack was uploaded to RHDN last year (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/957/), so you can link to that rather than the file host archive.
Title: Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!
Post by: SmashManiac on January 26, 2017, 11:29:38 pm
Thanks Kiyoshi Aman for the kind words! :)

About Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave, it took me a while to trace its original source (https://web.archive.org/web/20151009205358/http://ffbin.sp.land.to/all.html?), and once I found it I noticed that it didn't match the RHDN archive and moved on. After verification, the differences are not related to the data inside the compressed files themselves, so I changed the link to point to RHDN for convenience.

I also updated the link to the Gensokyo no Nazo randomizer - it now has a proper webpage and many new features!

New randomizers:
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent (corruptor)
- Pokémon X & Y & Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire & Sun & Moon
- Zelda Classic (fangame) (randomizer quests)

Yes, this means that all main international Pokémon games released so far has randomizers. Pretty cool!

Speaking of Pokémon, I also found multiple random QR code generators designed for Pokémon Sun & Moon floating around the web, but those that I found so far have based their randomization on completely arbitrary patterns without any game-specific properties. As such, I am not including them.

And with that, the list now contains more than 100 unique games, and that's only counting official games! I never expected there would be so many when I started. Wow!

If you want a randomizer that doesn't already exist, the best way is to make one. ;)

New randomizers:
- Metroid
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (roguelike)
- The Goonies II

I actually found two recent Metroid randomizers made within a month of each other.  I'm putting snarfblam's in the main list and Netsrotti's in the deprecated list, as it seems the only advantage of the latter over the former is an option to have duplicate upgrades.

Also, to complement the Hitman passive randomizers, I also found a bunch of nice passive randomizers hosted by Trysdyn (including a Four Job Fiesta generator available all year long) for the following games:
- Diablo II
- Final Fantasy
- Final Fantasy III
- Final Fantasy V
- Final Fantasy VI
- Legend of Mana
- Romancing SaGa 2
- Shining Soul II
- Tales of Destiny
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Let me know what you guys think of these passive randomizers. I've put them in the main list, but do you guys think they should be in a separate list altogether? Also, do you think I should include Bingo cards (http://speedruntools.com/bingo/)?

Big thanks to Azkadellia for pinning this topic! 8)

Thanks m06! So now we have two Final Fantasy IV roguelikes? I wish abyssonym would have documented what's different with his version. In any case, I've added it to the list, and I'll keep the old one there too until I can figure out if it needs to be moved to the deprecated section or not.

I've also added a new Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow item randomizer, also by abyssonym!

By the way, there are two The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past randomizers floating around now. I've added the new one by Veetorp to the main list, and moved the old one by Dessyreqt to the deprecated section, because the latter has been seemingly abandoned and has been used as a base for the new one. It has many new features and bugfixes, so I highly recommend you check it out!

I also found a convenient HUD for that last randomizer that I've added alongside it that should be convenient for Twitch streamers. There's also a version for the Super Metroid item randomizer that I've also added.

As for the passive randomizers and bingos, what I've decided to do it to move them to a different page, and have the list on RHDN only for actual ROM hacks. I'll do this whenever I have the time.

Ocarina of Time and Majora Mask are dead links  :(
I'm assuming it's a temporary issue with forums.zeldaspeedruns.com, since the main website is still running normally and still links to it. I suggest you try again in a few days.

I think "CPU Jam" was basically a certain emulator's term for "something in the ROM is corrupted and I can't figure out how to play it".

Randomizers added to the list:
- Dark Souls (times 3!!)
- Dark Souls II
- Dark Souls III
- Dragon Quest 1·2 (SNES)
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Final Fantasy V Advance
- Kirby's Adventure
- Legacy of the Wizard
- Mega Man 6
- Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
- Phantasy Star IV
- Super Mario Bros. (area shuffling)
- Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (enemies)
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Other changes:
- Added link to A Link to the Past item randomizer resources
- Added OBLIGE add-on for Brutal Doom
- Fixed dead links to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask randomizers that were originally posted on forums.zeldaspeedruns.com

Note that I still didn't get the chance to update passive randomizers, like splitting them from the main list and adding these A Link to the Past (https://wulf.ca/bingo/test/bingo.html) and Twilight Princess HD (http://tphdbingo.bplaced.net/?seed=688010&mode=normal) bingos. Hopefully I will be able to do so soon.

Thanks to everyone who posted here and on the randomizer Discord channel!

By the way, you can watch replays for the recent A Link to the Past item randomizer tournament here (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdoWICJMgPKWjUs15zg9irHWFHcouiFKU)! More than 200 matches total!

@Motherfan101: I can still download the EarthBound randomizer from my link. Please try again.
@PROTOBlues: The Mega Man 3 randomizer should work. Are you using the proper base ROM? I believe you need the Japanese version.

Glad to see this list exists! I've been hooked on the LttP randomizer a ton in the past and wondered if anyone got around to doing other games. I can't believe how much my original idea of randomizing Pokemon Emerald has spread to so many other games!

Only thing I have to add is that my Pokemon Emerald and R/B randomizers aren't necessarily deprecated. The Universal Randomizer does handle most of what mine does, but mine do randomize palettes and handle a few things (like attack randomization) a bit differently. Granted, I don't mind mine being in that deprecated list, but it's a point of pride that makes me point things out I guess! :)

Yeah, that was a tough call. I do realize your randomizers has some additional value to the universal Pokémon randomizer, but in the end I decided to put randomizers with minor unique differences as deprecated because it's extremely likely I would find minor unique differences all the time anyway. I did consider renaming "deprecated list" to "the-95%-supported-in-richer-randomizers-but-you-might-be-interested-in-that-remaining-5% list" though, but it doesn't sound as catchy. :)

Changes to the list:
- Added an entrance variant to the popular A Link To The Past item randomizer
- Minor labeling changes to remove some confusion

An interesting randomizer is the Final Fantasy 4 "Beyond Babil" Randomizer with fedorajoe's Playable Golbez patch. That way, we can see Golbez evolve from Zero to Hero.

Beyond Babil is already on the list. Also, are you sure these hacks are actually compatible? It would surprise me considering their nature.

You may have to enable the expansion pack for it. Make sure memory size is 8 MB in the game's settings.

Yo, I'm Klokinator. I'm the guy who's been pushing for the Fire Emblem community to create randomizers for 5 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hye1SWghZE

I created this video last year to explain the state of randomization and to educate the community on its applications.

As of 7 months ago, I was trying to update the current functional randomizer to add more options, but I am not a coder.

http://feuniverse.us/t/fe8-chaos-randomizer/2068

^I posted about it in that topic. My randomizer is... hackneyed. I have been trying to get help with it for months and months, but to no avail. If anyone here is familiar with coding in Visual Studio, I am posting to ask if they can help me feature-complete the final randomizer, which was sadly abandoned by /u/OtakuReborn (Reddit).

To explain what the randomizer lacks, here's an excerpt from my FEUniverse topic.

I am trying to add randomized shops, chests, house rewards, and MOST importantly... randomized enemies. I partially completed randomized enemies, and it works well enough, but it's a very hacky solution involving editing every single chapter to manually randomize the character slot for each enemy, and then using the randomizer's already existent boss randomization function to randomize those character slots. The biggest issue, aside from the fact it takes dozens of hours to do this, is it only works for one game currently, The Sacred Stones, and not FE6/7.

I won't get into the details, BUT if anyone wishes to help me work on it, please hit me up on reddit (/u/klokinator) or Discord (Just look up Klokinator, I'm the only one) and I'm always available there. I'll also check back on this topic periodically if I can.

huh? "Note: This list foes not include non-game-specific randomizers."

this list "foes" not? oops, typo.

edit: downloaded the master zip file off the github page for the - Dawn of Sorrow & Portrait of Ruin & Order of Ecclesia randomizer and... it seems to be missing the randomizer program. like, the assets and files and everything are there but there's no .exe included.

how do you use this one?

edit2: ugh, no clear instructions given for the mystic quest (and the rest of that guys randomizers). all it says is to run the exe.

well, i tried running the exe and after entering both the file name (with the necessary rom in the same folder) AND the entire file directory pointing to the file...still "file cannot be found".

need to check these before listing them. make sure they have an exe (in the case of my first edit) or if they have clear instructions on how exactly you use them.

i mean...i'm not telepathic. i can't read their minds to know how these work or if they're even usable.

Whoops! Typo fixed, thanks!

Many randomizers hosted on GitHub, including the DS Castlevania one, have the executable in the Releases tab.

I'm taking a wild guess here, but is your Mystic Quest ROM file name have spaces? If so, make sure you add quotes around it in the command line so your operating system can pass the argument correctly to the randomizer. If that's not the issue, I recommend contacting the author for support.

why yes it does...though i've almost never used that kind of console thing so this is new to me.

o_O odd... i enter the file name in quotes ("Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest") yet it still doesn't work. renamed the ROM file to Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest and it doesn't work with or without quote.

ERROR: [Error 123] The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect: *rom file name here*

as for that castlevania NDS randomizer, looks like you were right about the exe being on the release tab. that's a good sized one too but i guess NDS games themselves are pretty big as well. 84MB for the 64-bit version. i'll grab that later.

oops, i didn't once think to include that detail.

let's see... yeah, sure enough, that was the missing detail and it didn't need quotes to work.

well, that solves how that and the other randomizers that person made work.

edit: O_O holy... don't let the zip file size fool you. unzipped, this randomizer is over 358MB and... AVG just popped up an alert.

the randomizer .exe, DSVRandom_x64.exe, seems to have a trojan according to AVG... one where, even if i allow it, AVG will still prevent me from doing anything with the file.

here's what virustotal says...scratch that. apparently you can't link to the results page of a scan on that site but it got 8 out of 64 hits as negative.

odd...they say it checks out with AVG yet AVG blocks the file for me (can't remove it from the xip file)

It's written in Ruby, of course it's a pile of suck. ;)

AVG is a piece of shit, though. If you're on Windows 7, use MSE; if you're on 8 or later, don't bother with a discrete antivirus suite. They're almost all malware themselves, these days.

New randomizers:
- Borderlands 2 (mod bundle which includes various randomizers)
- Final Fantasy VI (exits)
- Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (thanks ventuz!)
- Rabi-Ribi
- Super Metroid (items - newer and better than the old one!)
- Star Fox
- The 7th Saga
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (corruptor)

Other changes:
- Updated link of the Dark Souls item randomizer to always point to the latest version
- Removed the A Link to the Past entrance randomizer variant as it has been merged with the main items randomizer
- shadowevil1996's Borderlands 2 randomizer is not deprecated
- Dessyreqt's Super Metroid randomizer is now deprecated
- Removed the Super Metroid item randomizer HUD from the list as it was designed for Dessyreqt's version

By the way guys, I need help. I know that there's are Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door randomizers floating around made by Zephiles, in particular an item randomizer and a loading zone randomizer, but I can't find good links to them! The best I could find was archives from YouTube video descriptions with no source, no version information and mixed/bundled with other unrelated stuff. I've been unsuccessful in contacting Zephiles too, so if someone could help me find the source of those releases I would greatly appreciate it.

September 25, 2017, 11:17:54 pm - (Auto Merged - Double Posts are not allowed before 7 days.)
Updates:
- Added a bunch of randomizers for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, big thanks to Zephiles for sharing them!
- The list is now too long to fit on the initial post!! I kept only the active & non-deprecated randomizers on RHDN. The full list is now on my blog (https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/).
- Added bingo boards (blog only)
- Added non-game-specific corruptors (blog only)

The perfect thread I've been looking for online.

I recently watched a few randomizer speed runs of Zelda - Link to the Past on Twitch and that looked super addictive.

Anyway, what are all of the good ones for either Gameboy, Gameboy Color, or Gameboy Advance?

I would love to try them.

Also, can I play any of these Gamecube randomizers if my console is unmodded?

I do have some kind of loader CD that came with a copy of a Japanese game I purchased online some time ago.

Can that be used or is there a way to modify a save file for them?

Thanks ahead.

- Donkey Kong Country
- Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
- Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness (thanks XModxGodX!)
- System Shock 2

Other changes:
- Updated Super Metroid route randomizer link to its new official page
- Fixed Rabi-Ribi randomizer link on abridged list
- Randomizers appearing in abridged list are now in bold in full list
- Added terminology section in full list
- Removed generic file corruptors from full list

@treos: Search for ROM expanders on Google.

@Steffenfield: You may want to check out the randomizers for Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem and Pokémon. As for GameCube randomizers, depending of which one you want to use, you either need the ability to run unofficial games or the ability to apply Gecko cheat codes - not sure if your current setup allows that. By the way, randomizers through save files are extremely rare - the only one I've seen is for Final Fantasy X.

Just letting you know of an update to Final Fantasy Randomizer:

There is now a web version!  You check the boxes you want, upload a ROM to the site, it randomizes it and sends it back to you.  It's at http://finalfantasyrandomizer.com, which also has links to the community Discord server and a tournament that's in progress.

The Github repo is still live and maintained, and the Windows version can still be downloaded from there (and is kept up to date with the web version).

- Doom II (silly enemies and weapons)

Other major changes:
- Added roguelike tag to an existing Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door randomizer following new feature.
- Fixed Super Metroid randomizers incorrectly marked as deprecated and added them back on the abridged list.
- Clarified that the A Link to the Past enemies randomizer is an add-on to the items randomizer.
- Replaced Endless Mode tag to roguelike for people not familiar with Mega Man 9/10 DLC.

- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Other changes:

In the new version you can randomize the level order, in addition to randomizing the abilities given by enemies and changing Kirby's color.

I also added the ability to completely randomize Kirby's color palette, which has some... interesting effects.

Alright, well even the abridged list is now too long to fit in a single RHDN post despite its minimalist design (last iteration was 14746 characters out of 15000). I might be able to tweak it, but I'm going to have the same problem in an iteration or two anyway. Besides, it was starting to be a pain to continuously update 2 similar lists but with with some elements missing between them, and written in different markup languages (BBCodes vs Markdown).

For these reasons, I decided to remove the abridged list from RHDN. From now on, the BIG list of randomizers will be available exclusively on my blog at https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/ (https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/)

This was not an easy choice, but I believe it is the best thing to do for its continued development. I never expected my list to grow to its current scale nor become a common reference, and it's all thanks to you! I will continue to follow this thread and keep you updated of any changes, just like before.

Note that I'll keep the old list in strikethrough on the original post for a while during the transition period just in case.

New randomizers:
- Dark Souls III (items)
- Final Fantasy V (passive - forgot to add the unofficial Four Job Fiesta to the list because the official one only runs a few days a year (which makes me sad))
- Game Dev Tycoon (appears broken with the latest version but wanted to list it anyway in case it gets fixed eventually)
- Hollow Knight (abilities & charms)
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (x3: alternate start, Words of Power shuffling, and a deprecated one that generates random dungeons)
- The Talos Principle (thanks a lot for sharing apple1417!)
- XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Other changes:
- Added additional restrictions on was acceptable or not on the main list.
- Removed the "Unfinished" tag to the Symphony of the Night relic randomizer because I was incorrectly assuming text uploaded to Pastebin couldn't be updated.
- Answered the following fundamental question: "How the fuck do you randomize Tetris?" (actual quote from Twitch streamer Vinesauce)
- Added DELUXE variant of the multi-game bingo

Expect another big wave of new randomizers soon - I'm still not finished from last time!

By the way, I discovered that gyre_  (https://www.twitch.tv/gyre_)is currently working on a Final Fantasy randomizer bingo, but it has not been made public yet.

--

EDIT:

I'm finally done processing my backlog! Here's even more new randomizers:
- Blade of Darkness (multiplayer weapons)
- Gang Garrison 2 (fangame)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (corruptor)
- Gratuitous Space Battles
- Homeworld 2
- Scourge of War: Gettysburg
- Star Wars: Republic Commando (corruptor)

Added randomizers:
- Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
- Super Mario Bros. 2

Other changes:
- Multiple games for the same randomizer are now separated by slashes instead of ampersands.
- Further standardized game names.
- Updated link to the non-passive Super Mario World randomizer to use HTTPS.
- Fixed Hollow Knight non-special randomizer broken on multiple lines.
- Added missing descriptions to randomizers where an additional randomizer for the same game was also present.
- Added note that the list excludes randomizers already within original games and ports unless an external tool exists.
- Added note that the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door item shuffler now also randomizes enemy loadouts in the Pit of 100 Trials.

EDIT: Just added Resident Evil HD Remaster to the list!

Would it be alright to add https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25918.0 (https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25918.0) to the list? There's already a Metroid 1 randomizer on there but it's for items and elevators. I made one that procedurally generates an entirely new map layout.

Not sure if this qualifies, but on the T&E Golf games - at least on Mega Drive/Genesis. You can choose the main menu Quit option and it will reset the randomiser so you get different weather and wind effects. These random elements are not included in any save games.

Sorry matt!, but this definitively does not quality. You can read what is excluded at the top of the list; if it's unclear let me know. Besides, if I was to add every game with RNG elements in them, I'd never be done!

Would it be alright to add https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25918.0 (https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25918.0) to the list? Wow, I'll definitively add it for the next update! Thank you very much for sharing Hex4F and keep up the good work!

### Added randomizers

- Metroid (map)
- Hollow Knight (enemies)
- Rabi-Ribi (passive bingo)

### Other changes

- Split the list so that special randomizers are not mixed with standard ones.
- Changed the style for better readability on smaller windows.
- Removed the helpful resources link for the A Link to the Past item randomizer as it's now included on its website.
- Removed the Triforce Hunt sprite randomizer link for the A Link to the Past item randomizer as it violated the "cosmetic-only" rule for inclusion.

Thanks for your work. Could you add a short description under each category subtitle?
Title: Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!
Post by: SmashManiac on March 22, 2018, 12:38:17 am
Yeah, about that... the short description is currently at the top of the list... but...

Here's the thing - there was a debate recently on the Randomizer Central Discord channel with people not wanting the other stuff was on the list beyond the main category. I split the list to solve the issue, but there were still a few valid objections.

First, the bingos. I don't use them so I can't really comment on the matter, but some people argued that they should not be present because they don't FEEL random. To paraphrase, while the list of objectives is partially random, they're really just a set of restrictions over the normal game, and the player still has to go through usual motions once past figuring out the optimal route, which by itself is more of a puzzle to crack more than anything else.

A similar argument could be done for restrictions. The game isn't modified in any way, so even if I'm assigned random jobs in Final Fantasy V or specific weapons to kill targets in Hitman, they don't feel more random for it, just more challenging. Another point to consider is that those particular randomization are usually trivial to do manually if you don't want to set a non-random challenge.

And then we have corruptors, which as funny as they can be under the right circumstances, are more about creating a chaotic experience rather than expanding over the original gameplay. In that sense, they fall more into the category of mods and hacks that just adds random stuff over the original game, and I already banned such hacks and mods from being into the list because they're not randomizers.

Other things to consider:
- Having multiple categories on the same page confuse people.
- I received multiple reports that my list of bingo boards is currently incomplete.
- Data that I have gathered so far suggests that only a small fraction of visitors care about those other categories.
- My list was never really supposed to cover these types of tools in the first place. I just started adding them because I couldn't think of a good reason not to do so at the time, even though I didn't really care much for them personally myself.

For those reasons, I'm currently considering getting rid of these other categories altogether. I haven't made a final decision, so if anyone cares about them, now would be the time to let me know.

Sure, I just think having these explanations you just gave on the page would be helpful for people. I thought it was all about hacks/mods when I first clicked on it.

I would like to chime in and say I like the categories you have made. I had not been aware of bingo or restriction-style randomization, but I am curious about them as a result of your presentation of them. I might also want to explore making some. Part of the overarching purpose is to give people reason to play old games again, even if the means or goals are different. Far better to provide the category and allow people to ignore it if they aren't interested, than to abolish the category altogether.

I also hadn't heard the term "Roguelike" and got to do some fun research about that.

Please keep up the good work!

Title: Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!
Post by: SmashManiac on May 14, 2018, 12:47:41 am
Alright, as I mentioned a few posts ago, I was considering removing all content under the "Corruptors", "Restrictions" and "Bingo" categories. Since then I have come to the following conclusions:

- Restriction generators are nice tools for convenience and inspiration, but are in general unnecessary as they can be easily replicated by generating a few random numbers at specific key points in the relevant game and associating each number with a choice the player has to comply with. The big exception is for speedrun races where the random conditions should be hidden until the race start, but I believe that such tools are better shared within the relevant speedrunning communities instead.
- Bingos are the most complex restriction generators due to their 5x5 grid format and balancing issues, so the easy replication argument does not apply for them. However, they are exclusively designed for speedrunning purposes, and I've had multiple speedrunners tell me that bingos don't actually feel random, so again I believe that such tools are better shared within the relevant speedrunning communities instead.
- Corruptions usually fall into my self-imposed exclusion of "only adding random elements over the normal game". The reason I made this exclusion in the first place is because they are generally trivial to make and usually has extremely limited replay value. Corruptors that don't have those issues unfortunately have the side-effect of causing softlocks and crashes, both of which are undesireable states within randomizer communities.

For these reasons, I no longer feel that awareness of these tools justifies their inclusion on a randomizer list. Therefore, I have decided to remove these categories and their content altogether. As a side-effect, this will also allow me to dedicate more time to the main list. I will make a backup in case others want to pick them up and continue where I left off, and will consider linking to such successor lists if they become a reality.

I will make the change during my next update.

OK guys, are you ready to play a randomizer where you have to switch between Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past to find items shuffled in both games? Because somebody just did that. Oh, and both games are merged into a single ROM and you switch between them by going through doors. Yes, this is an amazing technical achievement and the first of its kind, and you can play it right now!

### Added randomizers

- Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- Fire Emblem Fates
- Soul Blazer
- Super Metroid + The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (crossover)

### Other changes

- Removed all corruptors, restrictions and bingos. (See the previous post for the detailed explanation.)
- Removed automatic weapon swap randomizers from the Souls category.
- Added the Capcom, Konami, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega, Square Enix categories.
- Merged the Rare category with the new Nintendo category, the Shining category with the new Sega category, and the Mana category with the new Square Enix category.
- Cleaned up remaining category names.
- Updated link for the Mega Man 3/4/5 roguelikes to rock5easily's new website and added download instructions for people that can't read Japanese.
- Moved back general information to the bottom of the list and updated it.
- Added the "I want more!" section.

### Other changes

- Removed company-specific categories as it made specific games harder to find.
- Replaced "See also" to "See Multi-series category" and identified individual games accordingly
- Updated links and descriptions for EarthBound, Legacy of the Wizard and Phantasy Star IV randomizers.
- Updated a bunch of links to HTTPS.
- Removed America's Army automatic weapon swap randomizer.

You're asking at the wrong place. You should contact the randomizer's author for support, either directly or by creating an issue in the randomizer's GitHub repository.

EDIT: I'd like some feedback as to how you'd like to learn about new randomizers so I can manage my randomizer list accordingly. I would appreciate if you could answer this quick Straw Pool, thanks!  (https://www.strawpoll.me/16104157) (Pool closed, thanks!)

Thanks to everyone that voted in the pool - I implemented the most popular answers for showcasing new randomizers, so now you'll see the recent list at the top of the page and NEW / UPDATED tags in the list itself. Right now I'm showcasing the last 3 months. Feedback would be appreciated.

- Moved DeathBasket's randomizer for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in the deprecated section as it has less features compared to the new one.

In other news, next Monday will be then 2nd anniversary of this thread, and the creation of The BIG List of Video Game Randomizers along with it. Thank you so much everyone! :woot!:

Thought you should know that the link to Final Fantasy IV - Free Enterprise is broken.  Remove "www" to restore function.

Edit:  On closer examination, the "www" is not the issue.  Apparently the site is not secure.  Therefore the "s" in "https" has to be removed for the link to work.  Or just use "ff4fe.com", which seems to be the new address.

If you don't randomize anything, there's a really nice QoL hack hidden in that Phantasm Star 2 randomizer. Extra exp and fast walking make the game so much better. The only thing I'd add (and I actually did hack it in) is the end of battle texts not taking two text boxes each so you don't have to button mash as much.

New randomizers:
- Metroid II: Return of Samus
- Wario Land 4

I also updated the AM2R community patch (with randomizer) to the latest version.

Note that I completely rebuilt my website from scratch and deployed it today as well. Let me know if you guys have trouble using it.

EDIT:
- Added a winnable seed generator for the Metroid Prime 2 randomizer.
- The Super Mario Bros. 2 randomizer no longer requires a Discord account for download.

EDIT 2: I'm aware that my website is offline. It appears to be caused by DNS propagation issues. Hopefully it should be back in a few hours. Sorry for the inconvenience. Turns out it was a DNSSEC issue caused by my bug at my registrar. Everything should be fixed now. Please let me know if you still can't access the list.

I've added it, along with brand new The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask randomizers! The new The Legend of Zelda one is open-source and shuffles minor and major items together, and the Majora's Mask one shuffles loading zones.

ok, for some reason github is refusing to let me login even after 3 attempts at resetting my password AND telling me both my username AND email are already in use...

could someone please ask the creator of the DSVrandom (the Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow / Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin / Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia randomizer) https://github.com/LagoLunatic/dsvrandom know that Windows Defender is blocking the use of their randomizers DSVRandom_x64.exe entirely?

i tried creating an exception...temporarily disabling defender to extract the exe then use it but nope, it's blocked entirely and as such, the randomizer is unusable unless i disable defender then use it then re-enable defender.

Someone else reported this to me recently, but I don't think there's anything I can do to stop that false positive.

The last person who had that issue said it just randomly started working fine again shortly after it started up.
If you're not so lucky, the only thing I can recommend is to run the randomizer directly from the source code, since there will be no executable for it to think is a virus. Instructions on how to run it from source are at the bottom of the readme.

### Updated randomizers

- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages / The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

### Other changes

- Added link to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time randomizer web patcher.
- Added Super Mario Land 2 DX (unofficial hack) compatibility for the Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins randomizer.
- Removed finap13's Paper Mario randomizer due to violating the chaotic effects rule.
- Rewrote warning with old Metroid Prime / Metroid Prime 2: Echoes randomizer.
- Other minor description changes.

EDIT: Tooshi, the popular Twitch streamer, just published a Stardew Valley randomizer mod! It's now on the list as well!
I also updated the link to AM2R's community patch (with the randomizer) to version 1.4.3 - no new features, just bugfixes compared to the previous version.

EDIT 2: Added two additional Final Fantasy V Advance randomizers to the list! I also updated the links to Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man 6 and AM2R (again) randomizers to better, more up-to-date locations.

'Sup all! No new randomizers, but some interesting news for y'all!

First, dad infinitum used my list to create a variant (https://mattbraddock.com/randomizers/) that mixes all games alphabetically and includes game platforms, randomizer platforms, links to source code when available, and text filtering for game names. If you're interested in these features you might want to take a look!

Second, I've worked on the presentation of my own list. I moved all the randomizers that were in the "Other" category in standalone categories, and changed most of the descriptions to display randomizers' name or primary author instead of features to make things easier to find and less confusing, and only kept feature information whenever documentation on the randomizer page was lacking. Check it out (https://www.debigare.com/randomizers/) and let me know if you have any comments/suggestions!

There's new randomizer for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance at FFHacktics' forum - http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=12184.0
Leonarth does a lot of cool stuff with FFTA using Event Assembler, hope FFTA hacking scene will grow wide with all those advancements ::)

In addition, a new Crystalis randomizer is planned to be released on February 9. I shall also add it to the list once it does.

Crystalis randomizer link should remove the part after .com to access most recent version. The link as-is is only for the stable version, which the most recent version page already has a link for.

The original version of the Crystalis Randomizer website was always redirecting to the "stable" version, hence why I linked to it directly. Wasn't aware this changed. Thanks for letting me know!

On an unrelated note, I also took that opportunity to add a whole bunch of map scripts for Civilization V and VI to the list.

Hey, developer here.

Depends on which you select, but generally it changes their placement (not appearance). If you select any individual option, it'll give you more details. Cheers!

question this time.

could someone please explain how to use the Super Adventure Island II randomizer (since it seems the dev didn't give any actual instructions beyond

"Running the randomizer:
Windows users may use the executable file, "sai2_rando.exe". Other users, please run "randomizer.py" using Python version 2.7."

and that the rom should be "SAI2 NA 1.0     b4e732b3d742af1791605bcd7aa4a1c4" which i assume means the (U) version of the game...

except, i tried starting up the randomizor after extracting the files then placing a copy of the rom where i extracted the randomizor files to and entered the roms file name but... "ERROR: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified: 'Super Adventure Island II (U)'".
