Title: [SMD] Star Cruiser - English translation - Released
Post by: celcion on July 27, 2016, 02:49:32 am
Hello everyone,

Sorry if it's not the right place to post this topic.
I'm doing Star Cruiser translation. In fact, I'm pretty much already done it: only about 1-2% of text left untranslated because I didn't encounter it during my playthrough. I'm currently replaying it to find this untranslated bits.

Important thing is that I have almost no Japanese knowledge. And also not that great English knowledge (not good enough to write without numerous mistakes) as it's not my native language.
So, as you may already guessed, translation from Japanese was done using Google Translate, Excite and online dictionaries. So it's probably not fully accurate. But it's not just machine translation, I made sure I got meaning from each line (which was pretty tough at times) and story plays out properly. No meaningless bullshit anywhere.

Right now game is fully playable, with a few drops of Japanese from some obscure places that I'll fix when I find them. But before release I'd like some native English speaker to play it and help me to fix my terrible English. I can send translated game and script. Is there any volunteers?

TO DO:

Known issues:

UPDATE (08/29/2016):

With invaluable help from cccmar and KenshinX everything looks much nicer now. Numerous typos and mistakes was cleaned out, missed text was mostly translated, translation was successfuly playtested.
Now it resembling something that at very least can be called "beta". Which I'm planning to release in September to hopefully receive feedback about any other remaining problems.
Stay tuned.  :)

UPDATE (09/01/2016):

As I promissed, I'm ready for the public beta release.
You can grab it here (http://new.miralita.me/scruiser.zip).
ZIP archive password: cruiser
Enjoy.  ;)

UPDATE (10/07/2016):
Second public beta release is ready, hopefully fixing all the issues that were reported so far.
You can grab it here (http://new.miralita.me/scruiser.zip). It's the same link. Without password this time.  ;)

UPDATE (11/05/2016):
Release.

Please, report any bugs and errors you'll find with a screenshot. Thanks in advance!

This looks like it has a Phantasy Star 2 look to it. Does it use the same game engine?

Hardly. Gameplay itself is nothing like Phantasy Star 2.

Looks promising and I've wanted to play this one for a while. Hope you find someone that can help.
I'd probably be able to point out any errors with the english text but it's not my native language either and I don't know japanese.

Very happy to learn that this is happening. The quality of the English text in the screenshots looks strong!

I might be interested.
I'm an ESL and History teacher so I do this sort of thing quite a lot.
How many pages is the script? Just let me know before I know if I can commit or not.

Hey everyone,
we still need some help with the game. We're mostly done with the script revision, but it would be cool if somebody else gave it an additional pass or two, so as to iron out certain things and perhaps rephrase some stuff if need be. We've made a lot of progress since July, as a matter of fact. We managed to find the missing bits of text, to work out certain technical difficulties and to improve the quality of what was already translated into English. If anyone wants to help, contact celcion please (it's about 4000 lines of text). :)

Np, soon enough you will be able to help us out a bit with Star Cruiser as a thanks, as that one is naturally much more challenging in terms of script length/testing.  :o The release date of the beta patch isn't too distant, I can assure you. :woot!:

Yes, I agree, but my account there is still not fully activated, I can't post anything. :)
Maybe moderators from Sega-16 forum will notice this and activate my account.

I've submitted the announcement, so perhaps more people are going to learn about the open beta and grab the patch. The more people see it, the better. And yeah, it takes forever to have your account activated on the Sega-16 forum these days for some reason. We'll see what happens. :)  :woot!:

Is there a format it needs to be patched as? (.md, .bin, .gen?)

I used Star Cruiser (Japan).md from the No-Intro set, but bin/gen file from the Goodgen set should be OK too, I suppose.

This seems to be a game that benefits from the overclocking feature in Regen Debug. :)

Hi! I saw the article on Sega-16. I'm a native English speaker, and I'm interested in this project. What else, apart from playing through the game, would I need to do to help you? I have no experience in programming, but I'd like to try to help, if I can. OuO^

I saw the Wikipedia article of this game. The game was intended released on North America by Publisher Namco and they called it as "Star Quest", unfortunately it was canceled.

Many thanks for this awesome contribution! I bought this game some years ago hoping someone would translate it some day, and my wishes came true. Amazing :).

I started playing on my Mega Everdrive. Saving works fine. I'll make a report of errors, if I find any. Only thing I've seen so far are tiny nitpickings of the script hardly worth mentioning.

Thanks again, celcion! You are great!

Hey, this may be a boon to your team that's working on and aiming to finish this game's translation patch. Although it may depend on whether you like it or not. A lady studying at a college by the online alias of 'Nana' has a project (https://twitter.com/Nana_VS_Nana/status/769758893278765056) where she's planning to translate (https://twitter.com/Nana_VS_Nana/status/771156817292386304) and insert these scripts into patches for many PC-98 games. However she is asking for donations as she's struggling with balancing between her college studies, part-time work and her translation hobby.

But one of the PC-98 games that she's planning to translate is 'Star Cruiser 2', a direct sequel to this game headlined herein.

Edit: Interestingly enough, this new member of the romhacking community has recently posted details about her projects in the threads over at the Shmups (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58172), NFGgames (http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=6138.0;nowap) and Tokugawa Corp (http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1669) forums; with enlarged picture proofs and good comments from her and other users.

Thank you for mentioning this. Yes, I already contacted her and teaming up on Star Cruiser 2 is possible in the near future.
Main stopping factor is the text compression routine which I partly figured out (I was able to unpack text), but it's still needs to be fully hacked.
PC-98 is x86 platform (not compatible with IBM PC though) so anybody who are good with x86/MS-DOS assembler could try to help that translation come out faster. :-)

I played a bit. It's a nice game! From what I can see of the script, it looks quite good. I only found a few minor things which could be improved. Here they are:

Checking completed -> Check completed.
Revers -> Reverse
NAME, it was reckless... -> NAME, that was reckless...
Hey, NAME, I'm done here. -> Hey NAME, I'm done here.
There is no items. -> There are no items.
Welcome, mr. NAME. -> Welcome, Mr NAME.

I'll post more if I find anything else when I continue :).

A few more:

Isn't it the Star Cruiser! -> If it isn't the Star Cruiser! (if it's not a question) or Isn't it the Star Cruiser? (if it is a question)

I've played a few hours into the game and have taken some screenshots of typos and grammar problems but now that I check the regen screenshot folder only the most recent ones show properly and the rest are pure black :/ Looks like Surging Aura got most of them though.

When Max refers to Yuko, it's weird that he switches between saying "the professor", "Professor" as if it's a name, and "Yuko", her actual name. I suggest using Yuko in place of professor with a capital P, or just "the professor" throughout except when he mentions her by name.

There's also this sentence by Freddy:
"...program anymore, let's toss it away. FF"strange cylinder shape"We can return now." It's after you finish the second part of the cyber space mission.

Edit:
It seems Exodus is a somewhat better option for overclocking the game btw; in Regen I can only set the cpu cycles to 528 before audio gets more and more choppy. In Exodus it only gets choppy during dialogue and menu usage, when setting the clock speed to between 8 and 10 million.

Congrat's for the Beta release!

I've only watched the video but wanted to make a suggestion. Is there a chance text can be shifted up (i.e. vertically centering names of people in the top box, or avoiding text to be at the bottom of the dialog box for the story text)?
Thanks!!

Maybe I'm thinking about translate to BrazilianPortuguese, based on your English translation. Can I?

Me and my cousin wasted much time playing in Japanese, and we were caught in a part of the game. when we have to select options from A to H maybe selecting a sequence... Could be a way to finally (about 10 years later) finish this game!

I made some tests at the ROM patched and HxD hex editor, and seems work fine, but I see I will have problems about word with different number of characters... I don't know how to solve this kind of problem yet.

Example: game = jogo (works perfect!)
options = opcoes (minus 1 char - don't work fine...)

Sorry for my (not so good) English!

I'm planning to update my tools so it could be used for any other language translation for this game. And release them along with this translation.
So you could wait a little while for that. Most of strings in this game are variable in length.

I found a few more things in the script which can be corrected:

Hey, Gibson, what's going on!? -> Hey Gibson, what's going on!?
Please come to the Earth ASAP. -> Please come to Earth ASAP.

Thank you, mr. Masashi. -> Thank you, Mr. Masashi.
NAMEHm? Are you that man who sto le -> NAME, hm? Are you that man who stole (skips to next line by cutting stole word)
NAME, welcome. -> Welcome, NAME.
Going insid e. -> skips to next line by cutting inside word
you have to get out and leg it. -> so you have to get out and leg it.

Thank you for the translation, I've been dying for a translation for a while, thank you!

If you could, please document every instance of line skipping with a save/screenshot, this is the most prevalent technical issue with this translation (that's how the concatenation works, so we're retesting it one more done). Once that's done it should be more or less ready for release I reckon. :)

From which version this screenshots were made?

They were from beta 1.

I played beta 2 and the game crashed in the VOID base (in the forest) on Venus. I took a screenshot when exactly it happened. Will upload after work.
I don't know if it's the game or my Everdrive to blame. But I managed to beat the dungeon without crash on a second try later.

Works fine on my end (MD.EMU), i think that bug had a serious issue on a real console. Will Celcion fix this?

I didn't change anything in the game code, no ASM-hacks whatsoever, so I highly doubt that it was caused by me.
Also, no one ever reported any crashes so far (I also never had this happen), so I doubt that I would be able to fix something that I can't reproduce...

Hello everyone!

Thank you for your reports!
Will fix that soon.

I hope next version will be final because I think it's not that much left to fix.

BTW, I checked possibility to move text (upper and change strings number). While it's actually possible, I don't think I'll do it at this stage, because it will require to 1) change the dialogue engine which is pretty complex actually, 2) reformat ALL the dialogues lines (yeah, 4200+ of them) and 3) re-test everything. To put it simple, another 1-2 months of work on this game.
For a rather cosmetic change - I don't think it really worth it.
If someone else wants to do it - be my guest. :-)

It's funny that they gave the robot sidekick a different name, one of the translators must have been a fan of Elvis. ;) Shame it didn't come out in the west all things considered, but what can you do...

I think that this version will resurface eventually, Namco version was completely translated and ready to go, but for some reasons they pulled the plug.
We can play translated Japanese version in the mean time.

I finished the game. What a great ride it was! It was a bit hard for me to get into, but it grew on me and I played like crazy the last few days. Only thing I can complain about is the lack of a load feature. Why? Because since you cannot see what kind of missile you pick up until afterwards, it means you sometimes "lose" some when you have over 10. Loading after that would have been good so you can save the missiles for later. Other than that, top notch game! Very impressive 3D gfx, nice soundtrack, well written (I especially like Gibson's character arc) and lots of fun to play.

Thanks again so much for translating the game! The translation was very good, I only found a few minor mistakes hardly worth mentioning, but here goes anyway. It can polish the patch a slight bit. My last few notes:

I don't remember the full dialogue, but I think it was a person who wasn't expected to have video games as a hobby. Kind of how you don't expect old grannies to be bodybuilders, some people you just don't think have certain hobbies based on their look/gender/age etc.

If Ender's Game can use 'kuso', why not just leave it as is? I always did like the idea that languages started getting merged together down the road.

Because this game has almost no relation to Japanese culture. So it would be pretty out of place here.

Again I wonder, is "can play games" the most suitable wording? If he doesn't exhibit an unusual proficiency it may be better to ditch the 'can' and make it 'plays games'.
I mean, seeing an unlikely person being a gamer at first glance it isn't as much a question of 'can' but simply 'do'. I'm sorry for being overly pedantic, arguing about loose bits without having played.

OK, I fixed almost everything reported so far.
A few notes.

1) I wasn't able to reproduce that missing text on options, so I don't know how to fix that, sorry. If somebody would be able to reproduce it on any emulator - please, send me the savestate, taken before that happens. Thanks.
2) The instances where there is no space between the character's name (two of them) - it's not in the script and called directly by the game. So can't fix it without more serious game hacking. As I don't have saves to this places either, I think I'll left it as is for now.

If no other problems would be reported within two weeks, I'll do a release.

The sequel - Star Cruiser 2 - actually made use of a mouse (came out on PC-98 in Japan only), in the same year in which Doom came out IIRC. SC is originally a game from 1988 (not the SMD version of course)... this must've been pretty damn impressive back then. Also, it was actually fully translated, but actually never released in the west for some reason. I bet that the prototype will surface at some point.

In the same year in which Wolfenstein 3D came out actually, Doom came out a year later (1993).

Not really. PC-88 SC graphics was a way worse than SMD one. There were barelly a 20-30 polygons onscreen. But, then again, PC-88 was an 8-bit platform, without any graphics acceleration, so nothing better could really be there. But X68000 version came a year later with 16bit-color (65K colors on-screen) and full-screen 3D-graphics. And that must've been very spectacular.

Also, it was actually fully translated, but actually never released in the west for some reason. I bet that the prototype will surface at some point.

Magazine authors had physical copy of this game, so it must've preserved somewhere. Maybe this translation release will bring some waves and someone remembers that he has cartridge on a dusty shelf or something. And get it dumped.

Yeah, I have learnt about that spectacular dedicated Sharp X68000 version in the recent past. But is your newly formed group too scared to do that one or would you really like to move on to other unique games?
And congrats on a great release!

Not sure what do you mean by "scared". The logic was pretty simple - SMD version plays better, by far. Graphics aren't everything.
X68000 version improved only graphics, everything else is virtually the same as PC-88 version. And that's not that good as you might think. This versions has more freedom to explore, but also tons of grinding for money, far too many invisible walls, etc.
So I just took a better version.
Title: Re: [SMD] Star Cruiser - English translation - Released
Post by: cccmar on November 07, 2016, 01:34:24 am
Correct - the gameplay in the X68000 version isn't that great. The game has seemingly less text than the Star Cruiser SMD, but it's twice as long, if not more, because of all the grinding you need to do and the fact that pretty much every location is a maze with a ton of invisible walls. In fact, Star Cruiser 2 for the PC-98 followed in the footsteps of Star Cruiser SMD, because that version was clearly the most playable of the bunch.
Title: Re: [SMD] Star Cruiser - English translation - Released
Post by: ObiKKa on November 07, 2016, 11:06:12 am
Ah, these are very sound explanations from the two top experts in this game (pun!). So now I agree with you totally to avoid the X68000 version for gameplay and pacing reasons. Gurh! For every location to basically be a constrained maze one after the other does seem very tedious.

I do like sci-fo adventures. More of these please! They're so unique and radically different from the fantasy, sword and sorcery RPGs, not that these are not any fun. But they each naturally lend to different storytelling styles.

I am getting a freeze on the gravity catapult after Fantasia.  After landing there and talking to the guy a few steps in (dave), it freezes.

Could you please provide a savestate, taken before it happens?

Sure can, but I'll email it because I don't think I can attach files here. Sent it to <email redacted for anti-spam reasons> from the readme.txt.

Edit: I bypassed this part by switching to the japanese version to talk to dave and then saving and switching back to the translation.  All good so far.

Could you please delete my email from your message so spam scanners won't be happy finding it? :-)

Encountered another freeze point: after a failed ship hijacking on planet Folder the game freezes after Freddy's dialogue.

Could you check the latest version of the patch? It should work fine this time around (all the instances of this error should be  fixed as well), but if it doesn't we'll think of something.

Latest patch fixed everything :woot!:

Anybody beat this game yet? I'm having difficulty on Planet Salamander where i'm supposed to beat an enemy with an "ancient weapon". Is that the Power Shot?

No, the ancient weapon is in your inventory. Dave gave it to you earlier.
