Title: Castlevania Circle of the Moon Text Hacking. (HELP!)
Post by: Pemburu Vampir on December 21, 2015, 02:29:06 pm
Hi :) I'm new here. I got a question. Is there anyway to edit text in GBA games? I heard people use Search Relative program, but my win 7 64 won't run the program. I really am stuck. Are there any alternative programs that could edit GBA text on Win64?

http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/513/ or http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/818/ not work? Both feature great relative search tools, though I should note that relative search is not the be all and end all of text hacking.

Anyway GBA text is much like text on older consoles/as detailed in things like http://www.romhacking.net/start/ , I have a few more things detailing the GBA stuff in http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=14708.0

Thank you for replying :).
So, I read this document http://www.romhacking.net/documents/53/
And I'm confused with these lines

"Open Relative Search and the first thing it will do is ask for the
name of the file you want to search. Type in the ROM name (make sure
that it's in the same directory) and it will ask for the first byte.
Type 19 and press enter. Now enter the rest of the bytes from above
 and then press enter."

My relative searcher is monkey moore. but it doesn't ask me for the first byte. What to do?

Monkey Moore should ask you to enter directly your "word", I believe.

I entered tons of words but no result. It seems Castlevania CotM (the game I'm hacking) fonts/texts are compressed. Because I could not find them inside Tile Molester. Should I give up? or there's another way?

Though custom compression is not unheard of on the GBA the BIOS of the GBA has various compression decode functions that games do use (you will see things like BIOS compression or SWI compression, as well as tools to detect it). I will refer back to the guide I linked as I did take some time to go through compression there.

It could also be that the encoding is not relative, or it could still be a 16 bit encoding which you might not have accounted for (easy enough to do with monkey moore -- just put a wildcard which I think * by default between each character in your search)

@FAST6191 Sorry, but I don't understand the terms you speak of and the guide you provided makes me confused, because I have bad English and I'm new to this ROM hacking stuff too. I can view compressed graphic with Lz77restructor and edit them. but I can't view the font with it. Is there an easy instruction to follow? Relative search does not show any significant result. most of the result contains the word but mixed with weird symbol.

Thanks :)
