Title: [GBA] Magical Vacation English Translation
Post by: magicalpatcher on December 04, 2015, 05:50:12 am
(http://imgur.com/bRnTuQk.png)

Magical Vacation is the first RPG that Brownie Brown (now known as 1-UP Studio) of Mother 3 fame worked on. It had a spiritual successor, Magical Starsign, on the NDS that was localized but unfortunately Magical Vacation never managed to leave Japan. I'm now currently working on translating it into English.

The game is currently fully translated into English and in a playable state. There are numerous graphical glitches / spacing issues that still need to be addressed before I publicly release the patch on June 10th, 2016.

Here are some (outdated) screenshots:
(http://imgur.com/vSZtShV.png)   (http://imgur.com/AATkPNT.png)   (http://imgur.com/zWrE8GB.png)   (http://imgur.com/8MgYIvT.png)

I hope there are people interested in playing this RPG as it has some gorgeous graphics, an interesting battle system, and colorful dialogue and names!

Heck I'm always on board for another obscure import RPG to play! Now since you're obviously more familiar with the title than I am, let me ask you this. Does it suffer from the same sort of long-windedness that most RPGs of the mid-2000s suffered from? It seems like every game from that era had swathes of unneeded text and pointless conversations in an attempt to either pad out the gameplay or just fill space.

But regardless, text can be skipped. This is going on my watch list right beside Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 3 and Princess Crown!

I'm definitely interested in playing Magical Vacation! :)
This game always looked really charming and fun so I'm very excited to see someone is making a translation. Seems like you are making a lot of good progress, I wish you luck and look forward to future updates!

Rest assured your work will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks everyone for the positive responses! I'll keep the post updated with major milestones.  :)

Does it suffer from the same sort of long-windedness that most RPGs of the mid-2000s suffered from? It seems like every game from that era had swathes of unneeded text and pointless conversations in an attempt to either pad out the gameplay or just fill space.
The story isn't very deep so arguably, most of the conversations are "pointless", but most of the dialogue and characters in the game are surreal in an Alice in Wonderland sort of fashion and has a distinct charm to it. Also, none of the locations / dungeons are very long and overstay their welcome in my opinion.

Nice! I've always remembered this game because of the trophies and stickers on Super Smash Bros series.

I played Magical Starsign for the DS. Pretty curious title. The rather forced touch controls made it a little slower than it had to be for my taste, but I liked how everybody was a wizard there and some of the mechanics too, lol.

How this one compares to Starsign?

Hello everybody!

I could be new through here (though I'm a reader of this board from some years ago :) ) and I just wanna show my support for getting translated this gem.  Almost since it was announced on that Nintendo Space World 2000 I wanted to play it, sadly it never came to us the Western players.

But you came as the final hope, magicalpatcher!  You have my full support for this project!

A quick update. The first draft of the script is now 80% complete. All item names, spell names, and item descriptions have been translated. The menu is a lot more functional now so here are some new screenshots!

Happy New Year everyone!

The first draft of the script is now 100% translated. I've spent the past couple days hacking the text display for battles and it's now finally in a playable (but ugly) state.

(http://imgur.com/biRaACL.png)   (http://imgur.com/cHLGeTA.png)
Also, now that I've made pretty significant progress in the project, I can realistically estimate that the translation will be completed by June 2016.

Great stuff. Been wishing for a while now that an English patch for this would be released. It's one of the few Japan-only titles left on my 'wanna play but can't because the game hasn't been translated and I don't know Japanese' list.

Thanks for undertaking the hard task of translating this.

Edit: do you have any unfinished versions of the patch that I could test out?

Good progress is being made. The script is going through its second pass. Menu and battles are mostly translated although there's still a lot of text that needs manual repositioning to look good. I've also finished most of the graphics hacking and just finished hacking the name select screen so here are some comparison screenshots:

(http://imgur.com/o3gZJfM.png)  (http://imgur.com/7BauGF3.png)  (http://imgur.com/7Yyp1UW.png)  (http://imgur.com/Ua3d6x3.png)
(http://imgur.com/Bkh7YDR.png)  (http://imgur.com/uvYeCDu.png)  (http://imgur.com/WYkjp8X.png)  (http://imgur.com/9UlToH6.png)
As for testing, I will be mostly playing through and testing myself. After all, playing through a buggy incomplete patch would probably spoil the experience  ;)

Beautiful work! :)

Trust me, you will want as many people testing for bugs as you can get. There is only so much one person can do. However, if you feel like you've got it handled, more power to you. ;)

That's because the same company made Sword of Mana.

Posting an update since I haven't for a while.

The game is basically in a completely playable state but there are still quite a few spacing / graphical issues I'm aware of that need fixing. I'm planning to publicly release the patch on June 10th, 2016. Over the summer I'll address any remaining bugs and typos people report and then clean up and open source the translation tools / hacking information in late August.

Posting an update since I haven't for a while.

  • All the text in the game should now be translated (around 250k Japanese characters or roughly 2~3 light novels' worth of text).
  • Lots of bugs have been fixed.
  • I've gotten some useful bug reports from beta testers but could use more testing (again, PM me to help test).

The cover art of Magical Vacation is similar to the cover arts of the early GBA/NDS Mana series.

Probably because Brownie Brown had ex Squaresoft people working for them.

That said, everyone get hype!

I'm liking the art direction on this one.  It reminds me a bit of Sword of Mana a bit, which Brownie Brown also did.  Is the link cable really required for getting all content in the game?  Reading up, it looks like you can trade spells.

This is a VBA problem. It also distorts the sound terribly. I've tried No$GBA which worked fine, though other GBA emulators may work as well. (The VBA has problems with the unpatched Japanese ROM as well, by the way, so it's not a problem of the patch.)

Anyway, thanks for your amazing work, magicalpatcher! A news post on the website for more exposure would be great. Siliconera already posted news of the translation. :) Magical Vacation really does look incredible; surely one of the most beautiful GBA games. Will play more next week. So happy we finally get to play this game in English!

Thank you so much for the translation!
This game looks awesome.

I found already two bugs: One during the intro in the zen room (some text gets over the text box) and another one in the pirate cave (a symbol gets over the text box). But in general the translation is just awesome. Thank you!

I was using VBA-M to emulate this game and so far it was playing nice without any noticiable glitch, but the version of the emu I'm using (I think it's the latest one) runs very buggy in my computer. It tends to freeze or simply close randomly when I switch the emu from/to fullscreen or load a savestate. I'm using a 32bit Windows 7 because of RAM limitations (only 2GB max available on that motherboard). I'll give mGBa a try, I hope it's compatible with 32bit OS (some emu developers are starting to drop support for it).

Hello ! I'm on a phone and I don't know how to play the game. I download it but when I try to launch it with my emulator, it says "unrecognised GBA file", please help me, I want to play this game so badly !

Are you sure it's the rom what you're loading in the emu? It wouldn't be the first time someone tries to run directly the patch in a gba emulator. Also, which emulator are you using? For which platform?

Sounds like he's trying to load the .bps file instead of a patched .gba file. lol

Ive only ran into one real game breaking bug so far

Talking to this NPC softlocks the game
http://imgur.com/YmYPccj
I get same issue when I first met Sesame in Dark Realm.
I find a way to "skip" this problem.
Do not patch through a program your jap rom. Just load jap rom with your mGBA (if you use another emulator, then, I suggest you save a gamesharksnapshot of your game.)
After that loading jap rom, load snapshot, load game, start a dialogue when this problem occurs, skip a bad replies by pressing "A" key. THEN SAVE STATE.
Then load bps patch thorugh "File -> Load Patch", and game will reset with patch applied. So, just load savestate that you used. Replies will be in jap, BUT DONT WORRY, just press "A" to skip jap replie, and VOILA! next reply will be at english!
Well, atleast this worked for me.
Now you can keep playing at mGBA or return to your previous emulator (vba for me) and\or patched rom, like myself.
And, you always can repeat this if you meet this problem again. And you can keep playing.

PS. Sorry if I wasnt clear. I have bad grammar D:

mGBA seems to lock up quite frequently. Three freezes and I am still on the beach in the beginning. Two were during dialogue boxes so I wondered of it was the patch but the last one I was simply walking around when it happened, so I'm not so sure it has to do with the patch as much as the game.

For those playing on mGBA: SAVE OFTEN!  ;) If the game freezes, just reset.

For those having issue in VBA with the start screen not showing the start menu: check the SAVE type  ;) (it must be Automatic and Flash 64 Kb)

I'm having the same issues with mGBA, random freezes and stuff. VBA-M runs fairly buggy as well. I think my last resort is that VBA you're talking about. Is it Visual Boy Advance? I have old versions of that emu, such as 1.7.2 and, albeit it runs Magical Vacation, the music sounds horribly wrong.

According to wikipedia, the last version seems to be 1.8.0 Beta 3 and it's 10 years old. Is that the version you're using?

Ah, it was just a general question, aimed at anyone willing to reply:) I'm trying vba 1.8.0 beta 3 and, while the sound is awful,  at least i'm not having the freezes and crashes I was enduring with vba-m ang mgba.

Perhaps I'll try that specific version you've mentioned, (svn 1229) in case it's more stable.

Hi! I've wanted to play this game ever since I first saw it in Nintendo Power 15 years ago. I even bought the Japanese game, because I love like everything Brownie Brown has done since.

I hope you don't mind, I've been screenshotting some of the minor issues I've seen while playing. None of these are game breaking, just figured you might want to look into them to make the very best product you can :)

Another thing to note is that you can trade Amigos with VBA-M's Link mode to get new magic for your characters. You'll need to have pause when inactive turned off and have a Magical Vacation rom with a different name for both emulators. I've gotten 5 amigos on my own with this.

You can change what Amigo you're using in your profile page under Mojo and you can give Amigos to your own party members to use as well.

It's nice when ROM hacks and translations end up improving emulation. Usually it's the opposite. :)

Hi. I have found another crashing bug in the Abyssal realm. There's a city in which you can find four or five water people. If you talk to one of them, I don't remember exactly who, and having Blueberry in your party (dunno if it happens the same when Blueberry is not in your party) the game freezes the same way it does when talking to one of the treemen mentioned in a previous post in this same thread.

Aditionally, so far I've found about 7-8 spots in which, instead of the dialog, it says "untranslated".

The one we were talking about in the previous page, VBA-M SVN 1229. I'm not using any gba bios, perhaps that could be significant.

By the way, the place I was refering before is May village, and the water people are at the inn. If Blueberry is not in your party, I've checked it now, the game does not freeze (it does so when Blueberry is about to translate what that character is saying)

Hello, endrift here (using an old username). In order to help me debug the issues in mGBA, can someone provide more explicit instructions about how to reproduce the bugginess in this game? I have played a bit of the game without encountering any issues, and being as busy as I am, I'd prefer to get some help (e.g. reproduction steps, or a savestate/save game shortly before it freezes) so I don't have to play too much of the game just to debug it. Other helpful info with debugging is to see if it reproduces when using the official BIOS, and log information with all of the logging levels enabled.

Although I have heard good things about the game so maybe I should put some hours into it.

There are no explicit instructions. The freezes I encountered (In my case using the Wii nightly releases) are just random. They seemed to happen more often when text boxes were closing (At least looked like that), but they could occur in any moment. talking, walking around, fighting...

Because that it's kinda hard to make a savestate right before it happens.

I managed to trace down the bug; it would be triggered by how long the game's been running for. A DMA would keep going when it shouldn't, and started overwriting memory. It's fixed now and should work fine in the next nightly.

I wouldn't call myself an expert in that, since the obscurity of the developer is massive.

But, aheem, recently I prepared the ground to my Sword of Mana translation and I have some idea to share about what is wrong with the patch: SoM uses two byte value addresses for pointers without endstrings, but it does work beyond the boundaries using overflow to "gracefully" fall to the next step. So you have to take care when dumping and extracting texts.

That is one of the reasons I built my project "tabuada", so if someone have the time to look into the game, there you go. ;)

BTW, this one does complete the parts that the earliest patch didn't have of the script? :)

Also, this new patch should be the version 2.0 (in order to update the entry of the database).

Looking at the difference between the patched ROMs, it seems like the only changes are fixing the incorrect number in Lava Shot's description, and a bunch of changes to dialogue (which includes the newline issue that was causing crashes, but not the untranslated text).

There are a minor number of dialogue fixes but some of the UNTRANSLATED textboxes are still there. I'm going to keep updating this WIP patch for a bit more before officially updating it as a version 2.0. If you're interested in testing and reporting bugs and typos that would be appreciated!

Is this new patch standalone or does it get patched on top of the old patch?
This patch is a standalone and should be applied on the original.

It's been a long time, but here's a patch that I built from some commits I made a few years ago but never updated the patch with. It should contain some of the fixes for the freezing bugs but please post any other issues you encounter here!

There's no "New game/Continue" Button on the main menu whit this patch.
v1.0 had this. I'm on VBA-M latest version. So, it's stuck there.

Have a "New Game" button here, so maybe change emulators or you patched something wrong.

You need to set the save type to Automatic and Flash 64 KB.
