So, I know it's been forever since I showed off an actual ROM hack, but this one I've been working on for a LONG time. It's a hack of Rockman 2 known as Rockman 2 Everlast. Here's the new title screen and stage select:
(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-0_zpsuzjthxso.png) (http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-9_zpsjcg9lcox.png?t=1435106862)
Im sure some of you are aware that I showed off this same hack before, well I've made improvements to just about everything in the whole game. If ROM hacks were sold Rockman 2 Everlasts' selling point would definitely be the graphics, all stage graphics are hand-drawn by me, with great attention to detail. Here's some screenies:
Bubbleman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-1_zpspqclhqyw.png)Airman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-2_zps7ri4bp95.png?t=1435106979)Quickman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-3_zps0olyg1p3.png?t=1435107017)
Heatman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-4_zpsfpybfd9q.png?t=1435107019)Woodman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-5_zps7fivgwun.png?t=1435107019) Metalman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-6_zpsa1gsz5e1.png?t=1435107019)
Flashman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-7_zpsfsw0rnmw.png?t=1435107019)Clashman:(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20Main-8_zpsjylmzozc.png?t=1435107019)
Dr. Wily's stages also have all completed graphics, but I don't want to spoil them, However they can be seen in the demo.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Keep in mind the game is not finished and I'm still working out the kinks, but there are some fully completed stages, they are: Heatman, Woodman, Quickman, and Bubbleman.
While not all the game is complete, it is still functioning and can be completed to the end, however I still reccomend using passwords to get to the wily stages because running around empty stages and just looking at graphics can get tiresome.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The music is also unchanged, but I might have someone working on that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Some enemies have graphical changes as well, you'll find them in the completed stages.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the issues, (yeah i saw it coming )
I want to edit the bosses and weapons, however I have no clue how to use the debugger, in it's entirety, in fceux. You see, I CAN use the debugger to set up breakpoints to find Hex values in the ROM. But I CAN'T figure out how to edit the ASM it'self. The debugger has an "inline Assembler" but I have no idea how to use it, and I can't find a single article on it, If anybody knows how to use it give me a heads up, thanks. P.S: any other little tips and tricks for editing bosses or weapons would be appreciated, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So here's the download link for the patch: http://www.mediafire.com/download/fldwizm17646csr/Rockman+2+Everlast.ips just patch it to the original Rockman 2 (J) and it should be good
--------------------------------------------------------------------
As a final note, I posted about a year ago, a thread for a robot master contest for users to submit their robot master ideas. I've decided that now is the perfect time to use that idea so here's a link to that: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=17267.0 You can see the rules there so feel free to submit So that's pretty much it the hack is not dead and I really am excited to see everyone's reactions. So enjoy the demo and feel free to leave comments, Thanks
-
Wow. The graphics are an entire mile from the vanilla game's.
-
Thanks, but what are the vanilla game's?
-
Very impressive
How about do a new Megaman game via hacking any of the 6?
With the community providing ideas
-
That's what I was planning on doing with the fan submitted robot masters from a year ago.
-
Thanks, but what are the vanilla game's?
"vanilla" means the original game.
-
Oh ok I had no idea lol
-
Pretty good looking level graphics. Try to resist the urge to "make a pattern because you can't think of anything for something." It's a pretty big problem in a lot of NES graphics and is most noticeable in Heatman's stage and somewhat in Flashman.
Also, you might want to reapproach that character select screen. I kind of get the feel that you're going for battle-damaged? robots. But honestly, it just feels like half-finished vandalism of the original screen -- not up to the quality of most of your bground graphics.
looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
-
Yeah I see what you mean with the background patterns, I'll see what I can do with them :). With the character select screen I don't quite understand what you mean by "it just feels like half-finished vandalism of the original screen" do you mean I should make all new sprites for the robot masters?
-
I think what he means is that it's way too gray and needs more colors. Compare your character select to the original and you'll see how much yours is lacking in color:
-
Yeah I see, I just can't figure out a color that works with damaged robots besides grey.
-
Maybe you could still put gray in there, just not have it be a main color. Like say for Crash Man, have his face and helmet's palette intact, but make the spike on his head gray and cracked. Same with Metal Man and Quick Man. Little details like that instead of making them completely gray.
-
ok i see what you mean, i'll get on that now, thanks for the tip :)
-
If they're "battle-damaged" there should be visible robot parts or something.
What's under the fake skin? Is it just grey fake skin? Also, there would be far more paint left. Look at worn ships , factories, and old tools. There's a method behind their paint loss. How to display that with the palette limitations is up to you. But right now, what you have isn't selling it.
Also, for those heatman stages, think about the actual place he is at, and what functions the detailing on the walls serve. Are they exhaust, access panels, ventilation, displays, etc? If you can answer that about each before drawing it (and not forced upon what you have), better designs will come to you.
-
ok I'll see what I can do with the robot portraits I'll try and do some rust effects first and see what I can do from there, thanks for the pointers :)

-sorry about double post-
Is this any better ?
-
Oh yeah, that is way better. Nice work!
-
Thanks :), Now i'll just have to change the in game sprites to fit the portraits.
-
The only other thing I would suggest is maybe adding a little bit more color to the background of the character select. Maybe incorporate some rust/cracks into the design like you did with the portraits to make it more detailed, etc.
-
ok that sounds cool, i'll add it in :D
-------------------------------------------------
How's this?
This is all I could do with the space I had
(http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b530/32x1000/Rockman%202%20Everlast%20new-0_zpsmmvxnkho.png?t=1435354481)
-
Very nice! I think you can move on to the other graphics now.
-
Looks better. Metal Man is probably the most effective.
Small things: the horizontal and vertical banding on Bubble Man's goggles doesn't read as anything other than horizntal and vertical lines.
What is on Clash Man's eyes? Grey sunglasses under his visor? If so, the mid point doesn't line up with his nose, like a Crayon Shinchan comic. Also, why sunglasses under a visor?
Also, the inside of his head looks like tiny bricks.
Why are Airman and Flashman such drastically different colors than before (I understand the technical reason, but giving into that reason is very obvious here.)
Air Man's fan looks like a fleur de lis. Is it supposed to be broken? Would a fan blade break like that? It just looks like "change this to a spike because spikes are cool."
Lastly, you might want to darken Woodman's body to add contrast from his head, which existed before. (Is Woodman's head on fire?) And maybe shade one side of HeatMan (even though he wasn't in the original) to emphasize the lighter shape.
Weathered select screen looks much better and helps sell the concept. Might want to weather that Wily logo too, though.
-
Ok,is this any better?
As for bubble man I was trying to make it look like he had seaweed on his head kind of like the scooby-doo villain, I tried to fix up clash man a little bit, with his shades ( I only did the shades because I wanted it to be a little funny, like he's some action movie star, or something like that :P) The things that look like tiny bricks are supposed to be rusted machinery, with such a limited space detail is difficult to obtain. I tried to make airman's blades look a little less like a saints advert, and made it broken. I fixed up woodman's body (and yes he is on fire.) and added shading to heatman. Lastly messed up the wily logo. So let me know what you think, thanks :)
-
Getting better every time!
-
Thanks, when I get done with some more changes i'll put up an updated patch download link :)
-
Looks much, much better, and is reading far more as you had originally intended.
I'd definitely reapproach the idea of Clash Man's exposed innards. Intended or not, it definitely looks like bricks. Perhaps following the contour of the head with some of the details and removing the dots. Honestly, for he and Quick Man though, I don't really buy the idea of the exposed inside being rusted and the outside not. I'm not saying that it couldn't happen that way, I'm just saying that it's such an unexpected approach, that the viewer will probably not read the red as rust. I think approaching them more like Metal Man, where the red is exclusively for worn paint might be better.
Have you updated any of the in-game boss sprites to match?
-
Can't Metal Man have rusty-colored Metal Blades? That would be cool.
-
I actually think the way the Metal Blade is shaded in the image is the best looking part of the screen, I wouldn't touch it.
-in fact, approaching Quick Man's boomerang in a similar way could help there too.

I'll try and fix up clash man and quick man. I'm currently in the process of changing the boss sprites actually.
-
I actually really like the original Quick Man image from page one, specifically without the detail in the eyes. It makes him look like he's wearing shades, and it looks badass.
-
I would return to that design, but I already gave Clash Man shades, so I just don't want to seem redundant, that's all.
-
I didn't even notice that. QuickMan's white shades totally work better than Clash Man's grey ones.
-
Ok then, i'll swap em', no problem :)
---------------------------------------------
Alright, what do ya think?
-
Now Crashman has his undamaged face. Maybe give him a damaged eye like Flashman.
And maybe give one of them an exposed jaw bone?
-
Ok, ill get on that tomorrow I gotta get to bed, thanks:)
-----------------------------------------
Ok, how about this?
-
Eh, I'm not digging the repeat of the same damage on Flash manand Clash Man, especially since they're right next to each other. I'd restore Clash Man's eyes and probably damage his skin (since no one else has skin damage) maybe like Zynk suggested, and have a t-800 style skull or jawbone exposed under torn flesh?
Anyway, looking way better than before.
-
Alright, how's this?
-
I had a few minutes before I had to leave, so I threw this together. Now I'm on the subway, so I'll type this out:
I like how much effort you're putting into the graphics. If I were in your shoes, I would approach Clash Man, something like this:
http://i62.tinypic.com/16av3ti.jpg
Granted, I'm not sure about the palette restrictions here (I haven't looked at the ROM to see which parts are sprites), but...
I would change the 2B you have to 3B (this makes the teal shadow more dominant, which I think helps Flashman, looks fine on Bubble Man, and especially helps Clash Man's visor) I then cleaned up the visor, trying to give cracks that followed the curve of the glass and were affected by the highlights.
I also reapproached his helmet, so that the red would be like peeling paint hanging on the metal surface, which I think would read more clearly than red internal mechanics.
For the face, I made the jaw small enough that it would conceivably fit under the skin, had the torn skin hang over it, and instead of trying to draw every tooth, simply implied a few that were visible.
Just a quick throw together to illustrate. I look forward to seeing your sprite work.
-
I didn't want to make an exact copy, and I had to work through sprite and graphic limitations, so... how's this look?
-
Looks great to me.
-
Ok here's some of the sprites (they are all also animated but I have no way to show every single sprite for that :P)
-
Bubble Man looks a little weird to me honestly. It's hard to tell apart his facemask from his body. Maybe put a white outline around the mask like you did in the stage select mugshot?
-
I'll see what I can do, but the palette is limited. Just give me a few and I'll put something up.
----------------------------------
Is this any better? (I can't add white without changing the whole palette)
-
Yeah, that's better.

-
Yeah... I guess you can't, lol
I'll get that fixed right away.
-
What's your specific "pitch" for each stage? Right now, the backgrounds still have a bit of "random graphics and patterns" feel to them. If you were to pitch the stages, one-at-a-time, I could give some specific feedback and suggestions.
Let's start with Bubble Man's stage, for example.
-
What do you mean by "Pitch"? Do you mean the location (sorry for late response)
-
I think by pitch he means like the graphical theme. So basically he's asking what the theme for each stage is in terms of graphics.

Well, Bubble Man's stage, in terms of its location, is a large sewer main that leads to the ocean. With the graphics I tried to choose dark colors associated with the sewers, I.E the dark pipes in the background and the semi-brown platforms. With the green pipes I was going for a faded, sort of, water damaged color that reflected the stage.

Got plans to do a overhaul hack of a Megaman game to make a new one from scratch?
I'm talking new robot masters, new abilities, new plot and some special odds and ends
-
For the sequel, maybe... It really depends on how this one turns out.
-
Just beaten the last version, the only thing I see that make the game a bit slow is the robot-hat that has a lot of life and there is many them
