Update By: taskforce

Dynamic-Designs has released a completed translation patch for Super Shell Monster Story 1 aka Daikaijyuu Monogatari.  Super Shell Monsters Story is a classic turn-based RPG similar in style to the SNES Dragon Quest games with a style that is a bit more on the humorous side.

In a mystical world far away, a legendary race of beings called Shell Monsters dwell. These are not those sorts of monsters that threaten other life forms, though. Just the opposite. Instead, these special “people” live extremely long lives and enjoy mysterious powers that certain heroes – sometimes reluctantly – use against tyrants that threaten the peaceful existence of their World of Shelldorado!

Such a threat has arisen recently – a fiend known as “Fat Badger – and Elder Hermit Crab of Shell Village is about to invoke an ancient chant that elders must memorize, to summon a human hero from another world that is quite distant from Shelldorado. Soon, the perplexed would-be hero, whether he wants to or not, will embark on an ocean voyage in the flimsy Puka shell craft, hoping to locate his madcap shell hero companions who somehow seem to be drifting far afield from their assigned duties!

Special thanks to Byuu, DaMarsman, and Gerb for providing the original materials and early work that our patch is based on.

One small problem.  There are two version on rom.  1.0 and 1.1.  So which one they can use it?  I will take a test to both and see if it work.

Edit: Never mind.  Readme said 1.0.

Wow, so glad that you guys decided to work on this one because you always do such a good job.  :)  I'm actually playing your Burning Heroes patch right now and the patch is great.

I played King Mike's KM patch many years ago in anticipation of DKM eventually being done by someone.

DKM2 is one of a handful of SFami games I own complete.  If you are planning on doing that one, I can send you scans of the manual.

Thanks guys!

Hey, that is actually some thing we might be looking for. We are doing part 2, BTW.
If you don't mind, head on over to D-D and get with WildBill. He tends to favor that kind of stuff. :)

Do you happen to have the map as well?

Can anyone else get past the boulders in the Waterfall cave. I've done just about everything I could think of.

I figured I'd ask, but I couldn't get my patched nor unpatched rom to match the NSRT information and hash sums. I tried using FLIPS and Lunar IPS to patch both a headered and unheadered rom of 1.0, and neither matched it either.

I'm just wondering if this would cause any issues in the long run.

I'll try to answer in the spoilers:

Spoiler:
If you're talking about the caves that are behind the waterfalls, you need to talk first to an NPC that is outside the caves and ask to join you, and then explore the cave that is located to the west (the one on the left as there are three, one for each waterfall) and find someone which needs your help.

After some events, he will aid you with boulders. You can now explore the other caves and get everything in them.

I found some guy with a tent stationed outside the caves, but he seemed to be nothing more than an inn. I'll talk to him again though.

Edit: Nope, there was nothing special about that guy.

Are you talking about that npc with sheeps that sometimes appears on the overworld?

S/he doesn't have anything to do about it. I was talking about an NPC that is located in the Waterfall caves, but outside of the caves themselves, in the area where you access the three caves. He's near a shell save point, and he asks to join you, and you need to say yes an then explore the left cave.

If this was a feature hacked into the game I must know how this was done. They make games too easy for lazy people. I hate save states and think that any game that can't be beaten without them is crap.

As far as I know, the "no save state" thing is something the game has originally, and it causes some problems (one of them related to a password that won't accept for some reason when you use save-states. others being text glitches, for example).

Also as far as I know, it's present in the sequel because of the "real time clock" feature can create problems using save-states. In both cases is logical, as these games weren't intended to be played with emulators, lol.

I don't like save states that much either, they usually remove a lot of the challenge of most games, I would go as far to say that they can ruin the experience of a game if you're playing it for the first time, although of course it's only my opinion, and they are very welcome for games that can't save or don't have passwords, and you need to quit fast, or for testing purposses, for example.

Super Shell Monsters Story thankfully has "save spots" for dungeons or caves and the posibility of warping outside of most places so you can save on the overworld.

I DON'T see no guy near the shell point.

Whatever.  If some people want to use them, so be it.  Who cares?  Does not mean you are "lazy".  It could also mean you are busy and don't always have the time to play until the next save point.  Regardless.  chill out.  It doesn't make one better or worse of a gamer.  People will find their own way to play.

Love this translation.  So glad the characters don't sound like mindless caveman, ala glory of herc. 3.
