Update By: Draken

Finally, after several years of hard work, D-D is happy to announce the release of Chaos Seed! This is a very special game that is so unlike any other; it's part RPG, part SIM, part Adventure, and at times involves a lot of resource management. It's such a unique experience that it is quite certain you have never played a game quite like it.

In the game you play the part of a Dousen or "Cave Hermit" who is tasked with the job of healing areas of the land that have become unbalanced and lost their energy. This is where the resource management aspect of the game comes in to play as you must build and maintain an Enchanted Cave in order to channel energy back into the earth. A large group of NPCs and monsters will both aid and hinder you in your progress to restore the land to its former self. This is not the only aspect of the game, however, as there are portions of each Scenario in which you must venture in to town to progress events in the storyline. The choices you make during these events can drastically alter the way each Scenario plays out, allowing for multiple endings and adding much incentive to replay each part of the story.

A lot of work went into this game.  Bongo` is probably still having nightmares over the ridiculous number of hacks he had to implement!  D-D hopes you enjoy the story as much as we do!

If it makes you feel any better, it was toned down much more than say Feda.  Sad that you'd pass judgement without even trying the game :(

Really? I actually really like and respect Wildbill's script editing and writing abilities. Well, either way, you should at least try out this translation before passing judgement like Draken said. I can tell you right off the bat that these guys worked really hard to finally finish translating this game. And from what I've seen so far, the translation really is top notch. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. At least this way, you'll know for sure. :)

Isn't this the so-called "unhackable" game?  The one that needed SO many different things done to it, most people who looked at it, said "Eff this!" and walked away from it?  Or was that something else?

This game is amazing. I know that this is one of the best hacks ever. This is an absurdly difficult translation, and everything was done exceptionally well.

I helped a little in the beggining of the beta test, but I was unable to continue due to work and life.
Seems that Draken is a little upset (he didn't answer my last email), but these guys are amazing. These guys are very polite, and seems to be very good people.

Thanks for this translation.....

Nice.  It's so amazing that the SNES translation scene is still going after so so so so so many years, and I hope that ferver continues on to the GBA/NDS scene in the years to come.

@Darkmoon:  I believe that this is the "unhackable" game you're talking about.  The menus are ridiculous and required a TON of work.  I'm not surprised that so many passed on this game.  I think at times Bongo` probably regretted accepting this project ;)

@Dgdiniz:  Thanks for your kind words, and I'm sorry if I never got back to you via e-mail.  These days, so many e-mails that aren't top priority fly under my radar.  I'm so busy raising my daughter half the day and working the other half.  I wake up at 6:00 am most days and don't get to sleep until 12:00 am.  I only find the odd break here and there to sit down at the computer to work/play. It's a lame excuse, though, but I will say thanks for your interest and offer to help us out, even if it was only for a short time.  I know how time taxing real life can be!

Well, you're free to play the AGTP translation of Chaos Seed.

PS: I finally get to play another Neverland game from their Lufia era. Or is this their Energy Breaker era? Whatever. It's not their PSP/DS era. That's all that counts.

Hooray! As a beta tester I can already say that the translation is marvelous and the game and story absolutely great. Everybody should give this hidden gem a try, I am pretty sure it will amaze a lot of people!

And better don't mind Isao Kronos too much. He seems to like trolling and putting on fights: Googling his Username shows me that he is already banned from starmen, hardcore gaming 101, Fangamer and many more sites...

Did you report these glitches? Because if you didn't and you're "on the team" as you say, then you're not doing "everything [you] possibly can."

There was one last textroutine fix shortly before release, I guess it caused this. Every textglitch was reported and fixed during betatesting and this never happened to us.

@Malias:  Yeah, I think ChronoMoogle 's assessment is correct.  This definitely was something added/broken with our last bug fix.. *sigh* I was really hoping the bugs people found would be a little less prevalent.  Looks like that 1.01 patch will have to come a little earlier than I had hoped.

Edit:  Thanks again, we've already got it fixed :)  I'm not sure, though, if I should release a v1.01 patch right now or if we should wait a while in case more potential bugs arise.  I'm open to your thoughts.

Yes "For Your Information" I had "Reported" these issues to the "Team" Just because you don't believe i didn't done anything to contribe & haven't told your a** anything about working with the group doesn't mean you get to pick on others you give less hope on! I'm not one of those "newbs" you've disowned in the past and i've been trying my best to help out (though just recently during the beta testing phases) and if you can't see the fact i HAVE been helping out with others behind close curtains. Then there's nothing more i can say then to assume your being an unforgiving prick! No offense but that's how i personally feel you've been treating me since i'd begin here.

Why was that a killer!? That was not an AGTP vs D-D issue. We really worked on that game for a long time. I have files that, believe it or not go back 2007-2008. I guess you felt we should have just scrapped all of our completed work!? I don't believe that is what you or anyone wanted. Besides, I really liked the font GZ used in his game. We went with the thicker font because we thought it would make it easier to read. :(

If I may, a few suggestions on that point.

Speaking from experience, it's very, very easy to 1) lose track of issues that need fixing, and 2) forget that you need to do a 1.01, then when you remember that it needs to be done, find yourself unsure of what needs to be fixed. There are several items in my back catalog that need updating, but it's been so long that I've lost track of the various bugs that people find. It doesn't help that different bugs are frequently posted on different message boards. Keep a concise list of issues that are still current and that have been fixed in a place you can find, fix things as they come up regardless of how exhausted you may feel, and don't forget to release.

Thanks for the tips Gideon!  My plan is actually quite similar to yours.  I'm reporting each new issue that pops up to our internal bug tracker so that I will have a permanent record of it.  I didn't think before to include who reported the bug, but I will definitely make mention of it in the readme when an update patch comes out. :)

The learning curve is quite steep, admittingly, but once everything clicks in your head, you'll see there is plenty to enjoy and many, many different ways to build your enchanted cave towards maximum efficiency (that brainstorming is part of the fun as well).

Congrats DD on another release! Chaos Seed is certainly an interesting title and worthy of a translation. Thanks for keeping the spirit alive!

Absolutely. I highly recommend any hacker with large (in time or scope) project/s think about and seriously consider some type of bug tracking software. As Draken has done, I also record any bugs reported from other sources in a central tracker w/ any associated links, files, images, notes, etc so there is record and it is not forgotten. The older I get, the more I value organization and how truly beneficial it can be. :)

Believe it or not, I don't actually have any bug/issue tracking set up. Can anyone recommend some easy-to-set-up software, ideally something that could be hosted on my website so testers could get at it? Right now all I'm doing for "formal" bug tracking is having testers post screenshots and savestates on a hidden section of The Pantheon. I lock threads after I address the issues contained therein.

I use "Mantis". It was pretty easy to set up. At first it may look like overkill, but it is easily customizable so you can chop it down to something more to your liking.

Post by: Nightcrawler on April 18, 2014, 10:48:42 am
Bugzilla and Mantis are probably the most popular open source ones, but there are a number of others you can look at. I actually use a custom tracker I wrote myself because the aforementioned software was heavy and overkill. I wanted something light and more tailored to ROM hacking.

My first impressions are that this game is indeed weird, unique, and totally 'chinpokomon' feeling to me, in a good way, is the best I can describe it - kinda like one of those not-so-serious old-school Kung fu flicks. I must admit I have no idea what the hell to do with all these rooms or really anything for that matter, even after listening to the Master enlighten me, it all kinda went right over my head. It's almost laughable how thick they lay it on ya right off the bat. I too am playing late here, as so maybe I should start over in the morning, because it feels like taking an advanced college class trying to learn everything that is thrown at you right away, like Sentan, Senju, Senjutsu...I'm like, okay lets get back to killing monster spirit rocks, that was fun! The dialog/translation is funny and entertaining and well written though so far, I am enjoying it and will keep playing.

Amazing work. I had no idea this game even existed and it's truly one of those hidden gems you can't help but love. Thanks a lot! :)

I've spotted a couple of bugs probably unrelated to the translation:

1) When naming the Hero and Heroine, you can press L or R to change the character sets (which would originally be kana symbols and western characters). The routine to cycle through the sets seems to be slightly messed up: if you go to the left of the starting set, you'll be using the last, but if you go left again you'll remain in that set. The game remembers how "far left" you've gone, though, if you press L multiple times, you'll have to press R the same number of times to get back to the normal cycle. This works both ways. It's a trivial bug since 3 of the 4 character sets are the same, but it's there.

2) One of the things you're told by the Senju in the tutorial is that you can summon any Senju you named "by pressing Select". It took me a long while to guess that that's meant for when you're naming a newly summoned Senju. I kept giving names to every new Senju I summoned until I reached a point in which summoning a new one would cause a room to become corrupted: a gate became a wall (it still received Ki but didn't send through it). The game froze after the enemy scene past the recount time. Apparently, giving too many names to one type of Senju is bad (this happened with the Rat btw).

3) Related to the previous bug. I cycled through the given names of the conflictive (Rat) Senju pressing Select. They stopped changing after showing 32 names (it went through the list a couple of times, I probably have 14 - 15 different names for Rat Senjus). If I chose the name that remained, the same corruption happened. There didn't seem to be any problem with the Dragon or the Bird.

I used ZSNES 1.51 for this. Here's a savestate just before summoning the Senju:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/144016034/Chaos%20Seed%20-%20Fengshui%20Chronicles%20%5BNTSC-JAP%5D%28ENG%29.z14

The room that becomes corrupted is a small storage room (Earth element) in the lower part of the map (two rooms below where the Hero is).

Thank you for your detailed report, we will investigate this.
I, however, have a few questions for you:

- Are you using the 1.01 patch? it fixes a specific corruption but the gamut of fixes
it brought may very well be greater.

- Did you try to reproduce this in a different emulator? Chaos Seed is quite quirky and
many things that happen with it aren't related to the patch at all, but Zsnes is far from
a desirable environment for it to run.

If possible, please also post this issue on D-D's Chaos Seed forum, just so we can keep
track of things internally as well as externally.

Yes, I was using the 1.01 patch and no, I've only tested it on Zsnes. I'm aware there's better emus out there but I'm kinda used to this one so... I'll go report it on D-D's forum, although from the posts I'm reading, Bongo` will want to murder me :D
