A new RPG for you and me to play - in English!

After a couple of years in the planning and production stages, a full English patch of SFC Record of Lodoss War is ready for RPG-lovers and fans of the Lodoss saga to enjoy!

Dynamic Designs chose this project with the simple objective of producing a complete translation. LNF Translations released a partial patch some years ago, one that converted most of the game's dialogue to English but left much of the menu work and certain other features undone. Using the story in the LNF's work as a guideline, Eien ni Hen translated the remaining Japanese, and we went to work. Unfortunately, some time after releasing the original LNF v0.90 English patch, project coordinator Lina` chan was tragically killed in an automobile accident, and the remaining members of LNF Translations never completed their patch.

Selection of this project came about as the result of a random conversation between Recca, Wildbill, and Red Soul - while that trio was working on Burning Heroes. As Wildbill recalls, Recca casually mentioned how nice it would be to have a complete translation of this game, Red Soul agreed, and Wildbill asked Bongo` how feasible it would be to just insert some English menus.

No one knew how to contact the remaining members of LNF translations, but Bongo` quickly deduced that the most efficient way to "finish" this game would be to design a dedicated insertion system with full assembly support and re-load a complete English translation from scratch. Using the critical dialogue translation work of LNF's original patch as a take-off point, in 2013, the D-D team re-wrote the story and inserted it into this patch that we built from the ground up. Red Soul assumed lead coordination duties, and as always, the remainder of the D-D team contributed in their various areas of expertise.

However, without the original work of LNF Translations, completing this project would have required considerably more time. Accordingly, the spirit of LNF's work is still woven into the fabric and tone of this saga. And a special thanks goes out to Eien ni Hen who fleshed out the numerous miscellaneous files' translations that were missing in the LNF release.

We hope everyone involved in the original project realizes that our patch is as much LNF's as D-Ds. We have paid proper homage to those players and their work in our translated and redesigned ending credits for this game. If anyone discovers that we left out (a) key player(s) who deserve(s) to be listed in the ending credits, report this information so we can modify our file and release an updated patch.

Here in D-D, Draken and Taskforce were instrumental in giving the script an important layer of QA, making sure it did not stray from ROLW 's style and form. Due to their efforts, Red Soul reports that "many of his brain neurons were spared" from becoming frayed during this process! In the final stages of production, Wildbill, with his well known wit, lighthearted style, and penchant for easily digestible, savory writings, applied when appropriate his own lively twist to both characters and the general populace of Lodoss Island. Beta went rather smoothly thanks to the efforts of 4ph of Silva Saga-2 (French) fame and Wagner, a forum denizen who possesses an energetic disposition.

Final touches were applied by FlashPV (our friend who built the English title page for Burning Heroes and sent us redesigned English title pages for ROLW) and the ever-meticulous Bongo`. Using the combined graphics design work of Red Soul and FlashPV, Bongo` painstakingly reworked color palettes and layers intricacies until he could insert fully translated title pages into D-D's patch for this game.

So what are you waiting for? Go to our Download page and grab a copy of our 100% translation of ROLW and start enjoying this excellent RPG from Japan - in English!

Jesus, I had no idea Lina`chan died. I just assumed she was like me and fell out of the scene.  RIP :(

It was sad to hear of her passing. I felt I owed them for them helping me with Doraemon
back when I was with WakdHacks. I'm not sure anyone knew LNF helped me finish that game off.
She did so when no one wanted to help me. Back when I used to get banned on mIRC for fun.

Nice to see this was completed.

Does anyone know if the game has multiple endings or just one?

Okay I'm gonna squash this right now. Lina`chan's doing just fine. Want proof? Here's her Twitter account (https://twitter.com/linachanpr/). She spoke with Gid a little over a year ago and her last tweet was July 18, 2013. Please stop saying that she was in an auto accident. This is as silly as saying that Toma got hit by a bus all those years ago (and yes he's fine too).

Thanks.

Hoky, we're not trying to spread any false rumors.  That was what I personally was told sometime after LNF quit working on projects by a couple of guys who had actually worked with her on projects.  If that wasn't the case, I do apologize for that misinformation getting out.  I figured these individuals would have had proper information on this situation.

I'm happy to hear she is alive and doing well, and I wish she'd contact us regarding the translation.  Unfortunately, I do not use and never want to use twitter, so if someone could ask her to visit our forum (or this forum) or e-mail us, we'd love to hear from her.  She can reach us at dynamic-designs@dynamic-designs.us

Thank you beyond words.

I've (patiently) waited so long for this one (8 years or so).

And the Readme contains a mini-faq to boot. Beautiful!

To all the lovely people involved in this project: you can pat yourself on the back!

I wasn't around for the Toma incident, but I hear that was proven wrong within like a day, while the news about Lina had been going around for years.
Thanks for letting us know, though. :)

Most of us were very suspicious over the toma thing from the get-go, too.

But alas, I got fooled this time.  Way to not be dead and make me look silly, Lina.

Great translation, ROLW being one of my favoured anime. Whew, first I was shocked when reading the news, I  chatted once with her on IRC back in the days. I'm glad she's still alive and sound.

I think it was Lina, but it might have been one of the others, I chatted with on IRC a time or 2 myself. They were into Fire Pro D at the time.

Awesome, gave this a try last night.

Also, one quick thing, I think the ROM size given in the documentation is that for the headered ROM, and it should be an unheadered ROM that you patch.

Thank you for your kind words, SargeSmash.
Indeed, I got the sizes confused and you are correct; the ROM should be headerless as you say
and the most current read me has been amended to reflect that.

It's always a good idea to read the readme files that are included in the patches.  The read me for this game specifically tells you to avoid Zsnes as it hangs the game even in the original unpatched game.

ZSNES is your problem. Use Snes9x or Higan.

I can confirm that this does happen in the original game, but it's not a 100% of the time bug. I don't remember how, but when I was interested in the game I found ways around it (or it just didn't happen).

...Yeah it looks like it's time to let go of ZSNES. Man those were the days... but I guess every era has its ending.

This translation is top notch. The original publisher really missed the boat when they decided against bringing this game over. Might well have changed the course of gaming history in the West.

There seems to be no fixed pattern for the Zsnes hanging issues with ROLW as far as I can tell, and it is that level of unpredictability that is the crux of the problem. I'm not tech savvy enough to pinpoint what it could be, but in my experience a few games have a lot of issues running correctly; Slayers, Shin Megami Tensei, Actraiser 2 and ROLW itself present either intermittent hangs or saving problems.

That said, the emulator indeed raised the bar very high for a long time, and it became a sort of hallmark emulation-wise, given the complexities of the target system, so I'm not trying to bash it or anything as it has been my SNES emulator of choice for a long, long time.

Also thank you for your kind words, Mr. Bing. I'm not sure if ROLW's localization would have been history-changing, as you purport but what I do know is that the west has missed (and still does miss) a lot of quality games due to various industry policies and profit considerations. The essence of fan translation groups, as I see it, is trying to lessen this disparity by bringing to the greater public games that the group members believe can and should be appreciated.

Hey guys! I just got wind of this project and their release! Congratulations on the awesome job! I will have to carve some time to give it a try in the coming days.

On another note, I'd like to take the chance to let you guys that I am alive and well, I really stopped working on fan translations a while back to focus on my education and career. I visit this site at least once a year and I'm very happy to read and recognize some of my friends from back in the IRC days!

As someone mentioned earlier in this thread I did reach out to Gideon through twitter a while back, I rarely use social media but I figured I could use a twitter account just to give it a try!
