Title: The Light of Indra
Post by: KingMike on June 07, 2013, 08:00:33 pm
Thinking about bringing this translation back out for this Famicom RPG.

The thing I immediately recall that I don't think was translated was the enemies (I have a list but I don't recall if it was actually translated or just romanized. "Iguuru"? :P ).
Can anyone recheck the names.
For context, I have scans of a list with pictures, it's a few pages of a guidebook.

These things have this Pokémon-like naming scheme where you have mishmashed or slightly tweaked names, so if they aren’t translated, you will have some very untranslated-looking names in there.

Is it just me or do some of these look exactly like Pokemon?

Also, sorry Kingmike, the only one I can make out for sure is the bat. It says "Bat Bat" :D

+ Lobster

Not found in the manual:
ドラゴン - Dragon
(could be a modified ザッハーク=Zahhak)

Well, I'm looking at this again.

You don't have enough Gold. God doesn't like liars.

This is when you agree to donate to the church (for a service), but you don't have enough. Anything else a うそつき could be?
Maybe "You can't donate that much Gold. God won't bless you if you stiff him."?

There are a few more possible translations here: http://eow.alc.co.jp/うそつき/UTF-8/?ref=sa (http://eow.alc.co.jp/うそつき/UTF-8/?ref=sa)

Maybe cheater or deceitful person could work here...

I’m not seeing what the issue is, aside from bad theology :P

The implication is that you implied you had enough to donate (in whatever unknown utterance you give when you press the talk button in a game).

I read this something like, “That is not enough gold for a contribution. Need I remind you that Divine Providence does not fall upon deceivers?” but that’s too wordy, I’m sure. The ご加護 in 神のご加護 is variously translated as “blessings”, “grace”, etc. if that helps anything.
Title: Re: The Light of Indra
Post by: KingMike on September 14, 2013, 01:54:22 pm
It asked if you wanted to make a donation. You said yes even when you didn't have enough.

Also, this translation used "apothecary" for くすりや (medicine shop/dealer). I'm wonder if there's a better choice. I mean, a word that's archaic but people would've actually heard before. :)
(though I guess if we want to make people pull out a dictionary/Google, it's not the worst thing)

Apothecary is common enough. If you've had high school English and did any amount of Shakespeare, it's brought up in at least one or two plays.

I'm fond of it personally. After all, a lot of these games are set in a medieval fantasy setting. That shouldn't be an excuse to use a bunch of anachronisms by itself, but I think this particular one is justified. It's more setting-appropriate than pharmacy or something.

used when Darkness status is removed. (an enemy can surround the player is darkness, making them miss every? attack)

More specifically, the enemy has created しょうき (methane? nitrous oxide?) to surround the player.
And I guess when this message appears, that has blow away.
Not sure, should I just call it smoke?
Title: Re: The Light of Indra

瘴気 — miasma
祓う — exorcise, purify, dispel. This is homophonous with 払う (sweep, brushing away dust) and that is no coincidence. Shintō is very big on ritual purity and cleanliness.
Title: Re: The Light of Indra
Post by: danke on September 15, 2013, 09:12:26 pm
It can, indeed, mean miasma. In context, miasma is a gas released from swamps (methane) that was believed to cause fevers and illness. (Check out Night Air (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_air) and Miasma Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miasma_theory).)

But if you want to ditch the Greek/religious undertones, a cloud of gas could suffice.

As for やみを はらった, personally I'd go with "The darkness has been lifted."

Really? (http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/srch/je/%E3%81%97%E3%82%87%E3%81%86%E3%81%8D/m0u/tab/) (I usually see "Miasma" written as ミアズマ when they want that exact meaning.) Either way, miasma means a noxious gas that carries connotations of plague and illness. Not necessarily obstructing vision and accuracy.

Sickle Scorpion
Desert 1

I'm thinking "Scorpiontis" or maybe Manpion? (scorpion + mantis)
I think コブリュウ is cobra + dragon. Cobragon?

Just getting some inspiration from some enemy illustrations in the manual.

Taking another look at the manual, I didn't realize Start and Select are used.
Select opens a menu to choose whether to auto-advance and Start can pause the game. (kind of useless as pushing A to open the main menu already pauses the game)

It seems the game actually has a couple messages.

However, if Auto mode is turned on, the pause message will also close itself, making itself kind of pointless. :P

They're something like:

Paws!! No, wait. Pause!!

Buh?!! (Not sure what this is supposed to be, figured it was some kind of startled exclamation?)
Might as well be. It’s close in meaning to “duh” except not sarcastic. (ぼうっと is its dictionary heading, but the words found in there go out the window when it’s a vocal utterance without the と).

きかない means he’s the strong-willed sort that won’t listen to his dear mother’s concerns about this horrible idea of his; it is often used to describe a disobedient child :P

The gist of it is similar to when we say someone “will hear none of it”, “wouldn’t hear otherwise”, etc.

Title: Re: The Light of Indra
Post by: KingMike on September 20, 2013, 01:20:53 am
I'm not following this logic.
It's the formula to calculate a character's Agility stat.

Code: [Select]
lda $0431,x    ;XP low byte
lsr
lsr
sta $50
lda $0438,x    ;defense
lsr
lsr
clc
adc $50
sta $50
lda #$80
sec
sbc $50
bsc $02
lda #$00
sta $50
lda $0430,x      ;level
asl
clc
adc $50
sta $50
lda $042A,x      ;character ID
tay
lda $8EAF,y
clc
adc $50
sta $0439,x
rts
So, going backwards, $8EAF is the character's base Agility (and it increases at 2xLevel), plus a bonus
where the bonus is

128 - Defense/4 - XP/4.
So, every 4 XP you gain, you LOSE 1 Agility point, until you reach 256 XP, then it rolls back.
(and the penalty is cleared at level-up because XP is reset)
I have to wonder if this is a typo or if maybe if one game designer gave the programmer some handwritten notes and they misread 437 (attack) as 431 (XP). Because lower Agility based on attack and defense makes a lot more sense as a crude way of adding a weight system to the game (for a 1987 JPRG).

I have another untranslated line

The princess of Fahrei says this if you speak to her after you give her the magic medicine to cure her illness.

Pretty sure this is "You may cross the bridge to Koltes." (the king is giving you permission to cross the bridge to the next part of the game)

EDIT: For the first line, I've decided to use a Google suggestion and put it as "Please stay safe...". At least I'm assuming she wishes you a safe journey.

Another one:
Sanada Juuyuushi
Playing soon for a limited engagement!

Not sure if I should go with a direct translation (Ten Braided Braves?), romanization (Sanada Juuyuushi) or replace the reference, Spy vs. Spy maybe? (Superman's an obvious joke, so much it's already been taken by another line)

Random NPC.

Does this (perhaps gay? :) ) NPC want to date me?

"Stay safe.", "Good luck!", "Have a nice trip", etc.

Pretty sure this is "You may cross the bridge to Koltes." (the king is giving you permission to cross the bridge to the next part of the game)
Looks correct to me.

That looks like "俺に用かい。" . Maybe "Do you want something from me?"

I think this might be something like "Do you want to get dressed up and have a date?"

EDIT: Extra question.
This one girl gives me her phone number.
0823-24-9999
I wonder if this could possibly be that thing... where they encode words as numbers, like 765 (namuko) and 573 (konami).
I'm sure that kukukuku is something.
I suppose at worst I could localize it by just making the obvious Tommy Tutone reference (even if I embarrassed myself recently on youtube by assuming more people still remember Jenny than perhaps actually do). :)
I mean this place has a Superman Park, what's one more '80s joke?

Another mostly untranslated string.

The closed door...

???
Find it in the cave on Zalza Cape.

Another possible translation mistake.

(23) was in too much of a hurry and the (SUB20 00E6) spell failed.

(23) was in too much of a hurry and the (SUB20 00E6) spell failed.
That line looks fine to me. Worded differently, I think it would be something like "(23) was in a hurry and got confused so the (SUB20 00E6) spell failed."

0823-24-9999
I wonder if this could possibly be that thing... where they encode words as numbers, like 765 (namuko) and 573 (konami).
I'm sure that kukukuku is something.
I have no idea about this, just throwing out random ideas: 9999=クククク is an "evil laughter" according to the dictionary. 24=二死 is "two out, two down (and one to go)" in the dictionary.

Hopefully a better translator can help us. :P

That mysterious phone number oddly enough seems to be Kemco's actual "Telephone Service" phone number, at least as of the manual for Sanada Juuyuushi, which I just scanned (released 8 months later). Though Indra's manual itself only lists a different phone number,  0823-21-3300, which is also the only number on Space Hunter (released a year before Indra), the only other Kemco FC games I own CIB.
Thinking it's better to just stick with my idea of replacing it with a joke number.

I mentioned the priest in town says this (corrected: shoukai nakimono -> shoukainaki mono).

A monk in the temple says this.

I will introduce you to my friend in Kifros Castle.

I talked to everybody in Kifros afterwards, no change to anyone's text.

I had to resort to the guide to give me a push in the right direction.
Spoiler:
Indeed, I need to talk to the monk in the temple, then I need to go back to the priest in town. I need to use the "Listen" command in the church menu (by default he just gives the standard church message), and then the priest's text changes towards progress.

I will introduce you to my friend in Kifros Castle.
This one looks correct, but I think the Japanese should be いる instead of いろ.

More random NPC babbling.

Hey, you have a good body.
Want to be my soldier tonight?
(PLAYER) ignored him.

We are the only people left in this village.

I don't know, the village looks relatively populated...

Don't talk about only your own things.

That voice is the only big thing you have.

ファット
Enemy, looks like a human heart, or maybe a worm.
Amazonia. One would immediately think a fighting woman, but this is a needled lizard.

What's up with all this gay text? Must be a first of its kind to penetrate that deep, dark hole...

Probably, this game's NPCs include probably the first prostitutes with AIDS in a video game as well. :P
(going way off topic, but I'm guessing both were first considered in the '80s. I recently read a newspaper article saying they were going to now lift a ban on homosexuals donating blood because in the '80s they thought being gay was a spreadable "illness" rather than a lifestyle choice. No, I'm not suggesting discussing opinions on that topic.)

Still more questions in addition to the last one.

The eastern eastern sea. (why the double east?)

You only kill magical beasts?
...

I think "まじゅうにだって いのちって もんが あるんだよ!" is something like "You should care about their [magical beasts'] lives too!"

It's more like "Magical Beasts have the right to live too, y'know!" (lit. they have "lives")

Both our translations mean more or less the same thing (the thing to take away is that the speaker is calling you out for playing the what-measure-is-a-non-human card), but eh. Yours sounds better anyway.

View count is 1, like is 1; means I'm first!  :D
I think the message displayed when the enemy attacks should be: "(name of enemy) attacks!" instead of "(name of enemy)'s attack."
Or should "sake" be translated to "wine", b/c not any one know what sake is; what does sake do in the game?
I'll follow up after watching it all.

I haven't used it, but I think Sake restores MP at the cost of some HP (possibly random death?).
(mostly I've just been selling them because they go for some pretty nice money at the beginning of the game)

I think most people would realize that sake is what Japanese people call beer even if they're not fluent in the language.
