Title: Site: RHDN Pro and Jazzy Themes
Post by: RHDNBot on January 25, 2013, 10:45:40 am
Update By: Nightcrawler

RHDN Pro

After quite a few years, ROMhacking.net has gotten a fresh new default layout and theme!

It aims to balance the following:

Features of Note:

Jazzy:

We are also pleased to release a second new site theme dubbed 'Jazzy'. This theme was designed by forum member Jazz and later finished off by myself. It's very dark, slick, and a number of our staff enjoy it. Be sure to give it a try, it just might be for you!

Wow! I like it. So nice I thought you switched to vbulletin.

And the old threads seem to work fine too, congrats. This reminds me a "Dumb and Dumber" movie quote:

"They gotta be pros."  :P

This new theme kinda shocked me for a second. But it's not too bad. Either way, since I'm coming to this site at work using Incognito Mode, I really can't complain :P (At home, I use the Metroid theme; I love that theme)

One little thing is that the theme setting is not being applied to the forums.  They're being displayed with the default theme for some reason.

This will take a little getting used to. I'm probably going to forget and expect the old colors for the next few days.

Looks nice!

Usually I always dislike changes, but this one is really for the better, and I like it a lot !

You got rid of some of the coolest themes. And the RHDN mascot. :'(

I notice you kept the TransCorp theme. Biased much? :P

But yeah, the new layout's cool too. I would almost use Jazzy, but it's a bit too dark for my tastes.

I like it. It's much more polished than the old theme. The only suggestion I would make is changing the font color of the board categories from the main board view. (that is, the "Romhacking" and "General Category" strings) Both are dark blue and appear almost invisible on the blue title bars. I'm thinking this occurs only when you aren't logged in.

EDIT: Oh, wait. The buttons at the bottom of a thread could use some tweaking. There are a lot of white border pixels that don't really blend with the blue background.

Every time the colors are altered, I have to find a new avatar to match my settings, and then I have to alter everything else to reflect the avatar, damn you RHDN!

It does look awesome, I must say. Feels very modern, and flashy.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. :)

Zoinkity:
Should work now. Permission issue.

DS
Of two themes removed, one of them was mine sir. :P In addition, statistically more people use the TransCorp them than both of the ones removed. Double :P The ROMh can still be found on some other themes if you need him. Spinner never liked us using it anyway (though our favicon still reflects it).

Now, go look at your translation and hack sub pages and you'll thank me for doing this. It's a huge functional and readability improvement there. ;)

granz:
Yes, board categories should be corrected now. I could only see that when logged out. When logged in, it was lightblue as intended.

Can you edit the button images for us granz? I'm not an image guy at all. I did not make the buttons. I could pass the whole set to you if it would be easier, but it seems only some have that issue.

Love the new default theme. It's easy on the eyes, which is always a plus. I think I'll keep it :)

The dropdown menu doesn't work properly in Opera, though. When I'm trying to click anything from the dropdown, it disappears. It works fine in Firefox, though.

Sure. I make my own avatars all the time.

Is there a way you can send the entire button set to me? There may be some buttons I can't necessarily see from my view. (e.g. some that appear only when an account has certain permissions)

granz, turns out all of those buttons are actually made from this graphic (http://www.romhacking.net/smf/Themes/romh/images/theme/menu_gfx.png). Editing that should fix them all at once.

Give this (http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/12/14/3376284/menu_gfx.png) a try. I replaced some of the lighter pixels with darker ones. It should blend better.

I hope I exported the PNG with the right compression settings. It's 16 million colors with alpha layer transparency.

I've been using Bonsai for years, but I do like the functionality of these new themes.  I guess I'm just used to my greenish/yellow color scheme.  It's kind of unique.  Hats off to tweaking some of these.

I loaded it in. That's an improvement, but it still doesn't look great. Perhaps it would be better with a simple solid black border instead of any color blending.

You might like this version (http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/12/14/3376284/menu_gfx.png). I squared all the borders. No more need for transparency. Of course, it won't look quite as fancy...

EDIT: Come to think of it, this (http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/12/14/3376284/menu_gfx2.png) would probably be better. There's just 1px of transparency on each corner, so you can still retain that rounded look.

If you need to edit any other site borders for consistency, I can do that as well. Just send me anything you want changed.

I get the default theme at forums after logging in.

I think the old theme was quite good. Most of these new ones are harder for my eyes. For example, the forum topic lists seem a bit too packed with many of these themes, including the default. Bonsai seems to be the easiest to look at of the current selection. It probably shares a lot with the old theme.

I wasn't terribly impressed until I pulled up a translation page, and, wow. This is some damn fancy work.

It's a shame that visited links don't change color anymore, though. I kind of depended on those.

If your theme doesn't match on the main site and the forums, just change click the change theme button on the main page. If you were using one of the removed themes, there isn't an option.

The new design is indeed marvelous!

Now you only need a good manga/pixelation artist, who drawns the old dinocharacter for your siteheader in a cool way.
You should hold a contest or something, the spriteeditors in this board would rise their weapons immediately :D

The new theme looks good. I might not post here a lot, but I've used this site for years and definitely prefer the look of it now.

The only thing I mildly dislike is how amateur-looking the title graphic is (Romhacking.net) in hand writing compared to how sleek and modernized the rest of the default theme looks.

While the new forum theme and a wish to do general updates to the site is highly praising, the new layout of the actual games/utilities etc is less appealing then the old layout.

A vertical layout of the actual game hack will make a text on the right look squeezed. While the general idea of a text going "around" the vertical main window is ok, this becomes a problem when the "Links" are being divided (a part of them starting from very left, a part starting right of the main window) and if the description is short, then the Links and even Screen shots get squeezed in the small area on the right, rather to have a full horizontal space, which they obviously need.

Post by: Recca on January 28, 2013, 12:52:27 pm
I don't mean to complain, but I really liked the old theme a lot more than this new one... For starters, it was a lot more simple looking and easier to navigate. All the links on the left side of the screen disappear when one is logged in which makes it quite difficult to access anything when on the message board (such as the public maintenance). And on top of that, the RHDN mascot is now gone. Then again, maybe I'm just turning into one of those old people that hate and are afraid of everything new. I also dislike the youtube changes. I preferred the old layout and star system as opposed to the thumbs up and down thing they have had now for awhile.

Edit: The leaderboard was a nice addition. Is there anyway to use the old default theme again?
Edit 2: Well at the least now, the left side menu has appeared again. That's certainly good.
Title: Re: Site: RHDN Pro and Jazzy Themes
Post by: granz on January 28, 2013, 01:26:40 pm
I'm not sure if it's just for me, but elements of the board are slightly broken. When I'm not logged in, the bottom pane (where the New / No New Posts and Redirect Board icons are displayed) is missing. The icons are there, but no dark blue pane. When I log in, it returns to normal.

Secondly, the menu bar that normally appears on the left side of the page is... gone. I can't access any part of the site from within the board now.

EDIT: Now the side menu is back. Strange.

It's worth noting that, at least for me, Quick Reply has gone missing. I'd poke my settings, but Restricted Members can't do that because SMF is dumb and doesn't let you disable just the content-related settings for users. :(

I dig the change, it makes it easier on my eyes personally. the translation page revamp is sweet. The only thing I could suggest is perhaps adding lightbox (http://lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/) like functionality to the screenshots, but its mostly superflous, so I would understand if you didnt.
Title: Re: Site: RHDN Pro and Jazzy Themes
Post by: Nightcrawler on January 31, 2013, 12:06:55 pm
Most of the items in this thread should all be addressed and working fine. Some other items:

Old Themes:
Just to note, the remaining old themes are being upgraded to the new templates and the old broken stuff removed. You can see the details here (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,15809.msg233560.html) if you use any of them.

MisterJones:
Yes, we eventually plan on enhancing images in several ways including lightbox like functionality. In addition, we want to allow more screenshots.

The Mascot
The mascot was removed because we don't own it and can't do as we please with it. It has caused too many issues over the years with all the objections to usage and what not. We will farther decouple with it as time goes on. We need a mascot that we own and can do whatever we'd like with it that isn't going to be a hassle.

Visited Link Coloring:
This was a bit of an oversight. I did not want visited links to apply to the entire page, specifically constant links like the navigation/menus. However, visited links would probably be appropriate in areas with changing data. For those of you whom used them, what areas did you use them in most?

Quick Reply:
All of your custom forum theme settings were reset when the theme change came, thus anyone who previously had the quick reply bar set would need to go back and set it again.

I just noticed the old themes finally getting upgraded, great job there.  The new page layouts are what make the new theme so awesome, especially the pages for individual works.

But sometimes, when I load the forum, I see the wrong colors for about a split second until it loads the proper images.  It looks like it's loading one theme first, then loading your selected theme on top of it.

Edit: on second notice, I'm seeing it happen a LOT.  My theme is Blue Monkey, and I'm seeing a white background that lasts for a quarter-second often.  Usually it happens the first time a page loads in a session, but I saw it trigger even when editing this very post.  Maybe use matching background colors as placeholders for the images in the stylesheet?
Title: Re: Site: RHDN Pro and Jazzy Themes
Post by: Nightcrawler on February 13, 2013, 08:45:23 am
All of the old themes CSS are now user maintained (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,15809.0.html). If you have suggestions for CSS changes to them, you can present a fix there.

As for the default theme, the body background has no images and is only one color and still a brief white-out can exist, typically (if not exclusively) at the start of a session in Firefox. IE9 does not seem to have any such issue. There's nothing wrong that I can see.

EDIT:

I actually get this on the simeplemachines wiki and forum (http://www.simplemachines.org) (both running off an SMF portal) I would guess this is something related to how SMF and current templates load now in firefox. If you figure anything out, let me know.

This link seems to do it every time for me on their site (I am logged in there w/ account if that makes a difference):
