Title: Game Center CX
Post by: DarknessSavior on January 17, 2013, 03:56:41 pm
If you all haven't heard of this show already, that's a shame. Essentially, a Japanese comedian by the name of Shinya Arino (usually referred to as "Chief Arino") spends an entire day (usually 12 hours) playing a retro game, with the typical objective of beating the game and seeing the ending. And they don't hold back. They pick some really hard titles, too: Gradius, Ghosts 'n Goblins (the whole series), Mega Man, Actraiser, all kinds of really hard retro titles.

Arino also has a staff of ADs (assistant directors) who help him out. Typically one per season (they're up to season 16 now), but former ADs come back and some become APs (assistant producers) and whatnot. For instance, I've seen ADs make him home-made strategy guides. He's gone "Man, I want to eat (food x)", and some AD will go grab him some. ADs often draw him diagrams on his whiteboard to help him get past particularly tough situations. Or they'll tell him cheat codes that he can use. Stuff like that.

And the best part is, the guy isn't that great at most games. So it's really fun to watch him suffer through certain parts, but also really fun when he finally makes the right move and gets through. I think he's better than he puts on sometimes.

Here's a link so you can watch some of them on YouTube: http://www.gamingcx.com/

Also, some shameless self promotion: I translate a little bit myself. So far, I've translated three "Nintendo Channel" episodes (Excitebike 3D, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and Super Metroid), but I'm currently working on a fourth (as you may be able to see from the topic in the Script Help forum) and my first full 60 minute episode.

Here's links to those:

Excitebike 3D (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpGrgdKCFZU)

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ViTVV4Epk)

Super Metroid, Part 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPW6pXpFP1o)

It was asked of me in my Script Help thread what my favorite episode(s) were:

Personally, I like seeing Arino face off against games that I loved. So that means I really appreciate his Mega Man challenges, as well as the Actraiser one. I also like seeing games that he winds up doing well at, so things like Super Fantasy Zone (DVD only, you can buy it on Amazon), Legacy of the Wizard and whatnot are fun as well. I also like seeing him play puzzle/adventure games, so Clock Tower (also on the DVD) is one of my top favorites.

Discuss!

Because of this show, I decided to pick some titles up, or wanting to play some titles. Because of it, I played Megaman 2 (for iOS) all the way to the end. It also fired me up for another round of Metroid (I figured, if Arino could do it, so could I). I ended up having to use the same tricks he used.

Games I've wanted to play after watching this: Prince of Persia, Clock Tower. Probably a few others, but I forget which episodes I've watched.

My only real familiarity as of now is with Retro Game Challenge.  We clearly need the sequel translated!  ;)

I might start checking this out, though, because I need some interesting stuff to watch, when I need to veg out.

If XSeed had done better marketing and the show was more publicized, then there would have been more interest in the first game. I think they billed it as a collection of old school arcade games. That's no way to sell this game!

If you like that game, you will love the show. Arino plays games of all kinds, and that's actually where they got the idea for RGC. Arino was actually involved in the game-making process, and helped come up with all of the ideas for these games (his favorite is Rally King, btw). There's actually an episode of GCCX (that was supposed to be included in the special edition of the second game) of him playing through the first game. It's pretty hilarious.

I watched it the other day (you're the one who told me about it). He was surprisingly good at it.

Spoiler:
He only failed one challenge, but then again, it was the one challenge I couldn't understand what goal was

The games in the GCCX game aren't that tough, though. Although now I know how to complete that first game... Oh, and they all suck at Rally King. :/

Spoiler:
The goal was the same as the other Haggleman game. You had to get a secret character to show up. But in this case, the way you do it is so difficult, and you have to beat the ENTIRE game that way, Arino couldn't do it.

I had a feeling the goal was the first part but when he kept failing, I started getting confused over what it was. Thanks for clearing that up.

Favorite episodes are Battletoads and Another World. Seen'em all, but tend to stay away from the smaller 10-20 minute episodes.

And yes. Battletoads was amazing. Though the Japanese version of the game is much easier.

How much, how many discs and how many episodes per disc? 'Cuz the one we got in English is four discs, with 2-4 episodes per disc. $60.

On Rakuten, each each is around $60 (http://search.rakuten.co.jp/search/mall/%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%E3%82%BB%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BCcx/-/). Their running time is ~125 minutes. Considering that our only English set is 800 minutes, yeah, they're expensive.

That can't be right. Wikipedia says they get 7 challenge segments and an Arcade trip. That's about half of what we got. Which is still expensive as hell. But still.

You're right. Each set has two volumes. They're ~125 minutes each. Therefore, in total, ~250 minutes in total. Still less than our version.

I'm fairly certain AR2 isn't popular anywhere. You're the only one who loves that game.

And Dark Souls is far too new. The newest system I've seen him play games from is the PSX (though he occasionally plays the Wii for MM9 and Virtual Console titles).

That's good to know, but sales has nothing to do with why I brought it up. You mentioned there were some difficult games in the list. ActRaiser 2 is renowned for its absurd difficulty level, which would make for an interesting video playthrough... or at least an amusing ragequit. :P

Agreed.  I get my head handed to me in that game constantly.  It has the makings of what could be a fun game, it's just...  not.  Note to devs:  There's hard, and there's unfair.  Please know the difference!

I watched the first Super Metroid episode.  I'll say it's more entertaining than a standard "Let's Play" for sure, but it's not exactly riveting either.  I think Chief Arino purposefully hams it up with silly overreacting and he intentionally screws up for laughs.  I can understand how this could be amusing for some people.  If the show felt more genuine to me, then I might watch more episodes.  It's an interesting idea for a show though, and DS' translation seems good.

I know I've have moments where I knew what I was supposed to do, but for no reason I end up screwing up just because. Maybe it was because I was thinking something else ("I'm hungry, what can I eat?" "What will I do after this?") It happens. I don't think he fails on purpose.

...But yeah, he is a comedian after all. He'll end up cracking jokes along the way anyway.

But yeah, I do wish he'd move onto more 16 and 32 bit stuff. I'd love to see him handle X4, 5, 6, Legends, Legends 2.

Oh and just to be a bastard, Beyond The Beyond. Not because it's a terrible game, but because the boredom would be crushing. >:)

Yeah, sorry. I forgot about the Steel Battalion episode. But that's the only one beyond PSX he's done IIRC.

I'd like to know what kind of monitor he's playing those games on.
In the latest stuff, he's using a 19 inch Sharp Aquos. But I'm not sure what the old white monitor is.

16 seasons!? I thought that this show has only been on for a small number of years. Can you imagine having a job that involves spending 16 years playing through video games in front of a camera and entertaining people at the same time? I'm available if somebody wants to do an American version of Game Center CX.

The series' concept of a season is different than the standard U.S. concept. They often run more than one season a year.

Yeah. The way I heard it explained was that at first, the amount of episodes that got put into a "season" was determined by Arino's free time (he's on a ton of other shows all the time, since his main job was being a Japanese comedian). That's why the first few seasons were pretty short. Before the show took off, they would actually be worried about whether or not they'd be renewed, and there were multiple times where they were like "This is the LAST episode of Game Center CX" only to find out later that they got renewed for another season.

Now that the show is popular, a season typically lasts longer than a typical American season would. Last season (15) was 20 episodes, and this season is already at 15.

Well, a lot of American TV seasons last for 20 someodd episodes, just not for Cable network shows due to less viewers.

DS you need to find a stateside publisher to work with you to get this series officially licensed and distributed here.  Judging by the nerdgasm reaction in this thread, I'd wager there's a (niche) market for this series in the USA.  It could be lucrative work if you handle the subtitling translation.  I know you don't hold the rights to the show, but you could put together a pitch (with you as the willing localizer) and shop the idea to relative publishers.  In turn an interested party could contact the relative publisher in Japan for a deal.  Anyway, I know I would do this, if I was as vested in GC-CX as you are.  Just a thought!

Actually, Game Center does have some official localizations. It's been called Retro Game Master for a while now. You can buy the DVD set for the English version on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Game-Master-Center-Collection/dp/B0087VCG2Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1359468082&sr=1-1&keywords=retro+game+master). Is that the kotaku episodes? (they're the only people I've heard of who 100% legit subbed them)
I know kotaku said they were going to release a DVD, but I never saw them plug the actual release (and since they plug pretty much everything else...)
(the episodes I remember them releasing where Ninja Gaiden, Bonanza Bros., Clock Tower, the Genesis Fantasy Zone, Battle Golfer Yui, Wing of Madoola, Atlantis no Nazo, Mighty Bomb Jack, Solomon's Key)

Yeah, it's those episodes. Plus two more which I think were subbed exclusively for the DVD release (Shiren's Mystery Dungeon and Ninja Gaiden 2). Those two don't have English audio; everything else does. They also got new subs.

God, do I wish. Unfortunately, the chick who does the translations for the other group out there doing GCCX is the one who did the translations for the first set of DVDs. How'd she get that? Well, it just so happens that the guy from Discotek who was the head of the project frequented their project thread and asked her directly from there.

So I'm not sure I'll have any luck in that department.

One problem I'm betting I'm going to have in the near future, if I'm not having it already, is a bunch of people being super loyal to that group, and not being willing to accept alternatives (even if the other group isn't perfect, fansub fans sure do treat them like they are...).

For those interested, I've created a Tumblr for my GCCX releases:

http://lcgccx.tumblr.com

If anyone has any advice as to how I could publicize this any better, I'd take any suggestions. I've already got the five episodes I've done up on my YouTube account, they get posted on the Steam GCCX group regularly, and now the Tumblr. I don't have an account on Something Awful (which is where the other group resides), but a few of my translations have been brought up there as well.

Most people consider those two episodes to be quite boring. The ADs do a lot of work for him, and one of the only temples we actually get to see him go through is the Water Temple.

In other news, I've translated the second part of the Yoshi's Island episode:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTXFv1FrVXY

And now my group (yes, I said group. There's a second guy working with me to erase the text on most of the Japanese signs) has it's own blog: http://lcgccx.tumblr.com. We're called Last Continue GCCX.

(Part 2) per say, but anyways besides theres other episodes that needs the translation like the Sega Mega CD Game he'd Challenged (forgot name of the game) but pretty much those were forgetting even if it is boring gotta support the fans somehow ya know just saying

I always loved seeing GCCX episodes whenever I'm in the mood. Though I really do think the numerous AD's should allow Arino to play the games once off-screen just so he can get the feeling of whatever he's playing before broadcasting live. The AD's also put some nasty restrictions on Arino with the concept of the time limits and if a game offers unlimited continues, the AD's will often force Arino not to continue more times if far enough in the video.

It's still pretty enjoyable, and it did get me into a couple new games.

There are plenty of times where he's gone to challenge a game and he's played it before. I think it works out to about an even split, really, of games he's played versus those he's never heard of.

And the restrictions aren't from the ADs, they're from the producer. I mean, this is a relatively low budget show. They can't just keep going forever on some of these. Some games are just so long that they require a second episode, but if they just let Arino play forever on some of those games, it would be really boring.

I'm going to take a break for a while (I have, after all, translated, timed, typeset, and edited one 20 minute episode and two 60 minute episodes in the last three or four weeks).

But the next one in line is Super Metroid Part 3 to finish out the trilogy.

I love watching this when I have spare time. :)

My favourite episode has to be when he played his own game. It was really fascinating, mostly because he was with the developers.

ActRaiser was a great one, too. Didn't he destroy all the villagers who were asking for help as they were all fighting? I was so shocked he did that, but I couldn't help but laugh. I never thought you could do that!

It's a great thing to pass the time with. Especially since there's 16 seasons of it.

That was a pretty amazing episode. I still need to finish RGC.

ActRaiser is one of my favorites too. And yeah, I actually did that as a kid. I was really pissed when it didn't solve the problem. I was probably the worst God ever. XD

FujiTV shut down most people's YouTube uploads of Game Center CX. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop subbing it!

I just finished the Earthbound episode! Even those of you who didn't care much for the show before should give this episode a look! It was a blast!

You clearly don't pay attention to anything about things you like on the internet.

It uses the "Retro Game Master" name (something the guys at Gascoin, the company who makes the show, came up with, btw). But zari-gani, the translator from SAGCCX, is the one who did all of the translations for the show. It DOES include the stupid English dub announcer, but you can turn it off. Very simple.

Where can you get them for $36?
amazon has them at $50. I tried using Google Shopping to find it, but didn't. (if I'm going to pay that much for the DVDs, I'd like to at least be supporting the show and not just a random ebay reseller)

The DVDs aren't overpriced. Even at full price? $60 gets you 14 episodes of the show. Each episode is at least one hour long, with one of them being more than that because it includes a live event of him playing Mighty Bomb Jack.

At $36? That's a steal.

And I've mentioned once already that the Shiren the Wanderer episode will never be translated online. Because it is in the DVDs and we respect that. Much like you will not find me or SAGCCX linking to Ninja Gaiden and the like. Because you SHOULD buy the DVDs and support the show if you like it. I'm really tired of a lot of people in this fandom whining about the DVDs. They're high quality and worth the money. I hate seeing them whine just because they can't get certain episodes for free anymore.

Yes indeed. I'm not sure if the SA forums are allowing non-members or not right now, but there's a listing for it there.

Alternatively, you can check the GCCX Steam group or GamingCX.com. They've got links to all of the episodes done so far.

Nope, the paywall is up.  And even then, non-SA members don't have access to the tracker anyways.

Anyways, I'm pretty happy with all the eps I have from the SAGCCX team.

But it's not one of the ones on the DVD.

Since you apparently won't click on the link I sent you to find out what IS on the DVD, I'll just list it here:

Ninja Gaiden, Super Fantasy Zone, Bonanza Brothers, Solomon's Key, Clock Tower, Mighty Bomb Jack Part 1, 2, and the Live Challenge. The Mystery of Atlantis. S.O.S. Battle Golfer Yui. 53 Stations of the Tokkaido. The Wing of Madoola. Golden Axe. Shiren the Wanderer Parts 1 and 2. Ninja Gaiden 2.

Now I just hope one day some publisher would release Tokyo Encounter here.

That's because those episodes were translated by TV Nihon, quite possibly the worst fansub group I've ever seen.

Now they're done by SAGCCX and my group, Last Continue GCCX. Our quality is hundreds of times better than TVN.

Depends on how shit. Most, if not all of TV Nihon's stuff is tolerable, but there are completely incomprehensible subs out there. I imagine they exist in languages other than English too.

No, because it decreases the average quality.

That’s only speaking for the general case, though; The Backstroke of the West was a marked improvement on Revenge of the Sith.

Not really, no. If you check that blog (I follow it regularly) you'll see that TVN makes really terrible errors all the time.

Even in GCCX, a show that regularly has subtitles on the screen for what is being said, they will STILL get it wrong. Their translators often do not know what they are doing at all.

In short, a translation filled with mistakes isn't much better than someone watching a show without subtitles and guessing what is going on.

I meant their GCCX episodes. They didn't seem to be TOO off. In the "Tolerable but Jesus Christ I wish it was better" range. You can get the meaning of most of it.

It seems their live action translations aside from GCCX are fucking HORRIBLE though.

Discuss!

~DS

I would personally call the "Excitebike 3D" episode an "Nintendo eShop" episode, rather than a "Nintendo Channel" episode, since the opening title says "Arino's Challenge 3D" (implying that the episode is meant to be viewed in 3D, and thus on the Nintendo 3DS). The Star Fox 64 "Nintendo eShop" episode (unfortunately, some people call it a "Nintendo Channel" episode) was probably the most popular use of live action 3D video made for the Nintendo 3DS at the time the Nintendo 3DS LL was released on July 28, 2012. At the time, the GameCenter CX episodes were the only entertaining use of live action video made for the Nintendo 3DS.
