I've got a 720p LCD.  It's not huge (32"), but it's pretty decent for gaming, given that there's no lag to speak of.  I originally bought a Westinghouse that lagged by 100ms, stuttered every 10-15 minutes for around 5 seconds, and completely blacked out on white flashes onscreen (Rayman: Raving Rabbids did this quite often...).  That puppy went back.  As much as I hate supporting Sony, Best Buy had a sweet deal on an open-box Bravia at the time.

There is a difference between Blu-Ray and DVD even on a 720p.  Blu-Ray does some downscaling, but is tossing data, not coming up with data to fill in.  DVD, on the other hand, has to upscale, and thusly is filling in non-existent data.

All that being said, the difference is not HUGE, but it's noticeable, even on a 720p set.

Sorry, nothing to really say about the format wars that hasn't been hashed over a million times.

I'd like to note that I've seen differences between HDTV broadcasts at 720p and my own DVDs of the same content on my Bravia KDL-26L5000, a fairly low end HDTV. Only cost 450, not counting tax.

With a higher quality input, I'd probably see more of a difference.

It also depends on the DVD as well. Visual errors that are covered up by low end TVs(usually CRTs) will be hugely exposed on any HDTV. I discovered that myself when I first got this thing. A well made DVD won't have nearly as much trouble up until you get to the higher end ones.

compression technology is getting better also, the Red Camera Company has a compression technology that can hold a significant amount of 4K Resolution Video (4096x2160) on a DVD9 (dual layer regular DVD) which is a greater resolution than a what is put on Blu-Rays, now they don't have lossless 7.1 audio tracks either, and I'm not sure exactly how long a video will be able to fit on a DVD9 but it sounds pretty impressive. Even more would fit on a blu-ray but I not as many people have blu-ray burners or access to burnable blu-rays, and I think they're trying to not give sony money as they are a competitor in the camera business.

in the next year or two they are gonna release Red 28K (28000x9334) which I figure won't fit on anything but a harddrive or a HVD, at least if you want it to be any meaningful length of video

why did sony lose the betamax war and win this one? You still didnt answer this? Cause sony wasnt also into gaming back in the 70s? And I mean not just with the sd example but nintenndo started trying to bully third parties in the early wii days when succesful like they did in snes days so they unlike sony dont appear to learn from mistakes (sony apparently did hence why they won a war they never won previously dvd doesnt count since it had no real competitor).

Basically big players in the porn industry announced that they would use VHS, so VHS it was. Now they announced it would be Blu-ray, Blu-ray it was. Upscaled DVDs have a limit on the vidoe quality. There are more than a few HDTVs that are 720p and could still benefit from Blu-Ray as well. It all comes down to the build quality. You seriously overestimate the video quality of upscaled DVDs, plus you forget how many 1080p screens are out there, either in homes or in retail stores.

It is as I.S.T. says. Heck, my laptop has 1080p resolution! Out TV at home has 1080p resolution! Just because people were berated badly in stores to buy HD ready, because "it'll be compatible with Full HD and that won't start for a while in media broadcasts", doesn't mean there weren't enough people who could read a technical magazine, see the pro's and con's and decided to buy a Full HD TV from the beginning!

For video quality, I posted this lengthy, detailed post in your other thread. So read it and look at the pictures. If you don't see the horrible quality degradation, then nobody here can help you. You should in that case get your hands on a 1080p digital video source, rescale the whole thing to NTSC 16:9 anaglyph with VirtualDub and then tell me there is no significant difference on playback time!

HVD sounds interesting, but sounds like our society would need significant advances in technology if it was supposed to be anything like DVD with a DVD burner in every home.

right or wrong, if you think that most guys don't look at, and many guys buy porn, you have lived a very sheltered life.

as for CRTs, they are great, but I wouldn't opt for 480p when I can do better. you CAN get CRTs that can output up to 2048×1536 resolution (that's a 4:3 ratio) they are rare though, and again, people don't make CRTs anymore (sadly)

and yeah, I can believe that your standard definition TV will output standard definition sources (like your gamecube, or a regular DVD player) better than your 720p screen (especially because I don't know where you got your 720p screen) the fact that you have a 720p screen but nothing to watch on it is kind if strange to me.

as for even standard definition things like your gamecube or your DVD player, you should get component cables, or where the machine supports it, HDMI, believe me, it'll look better than composite. And to be fair, to really compare a 720p or 1080p set to a standard definition one, you really need high definition content, like a blu-ray player, for example.

as for holographic versatile disk, no, it has nothing to do with holograms or 3D, it's just the nature that the disk holds data, and no, it probably won't be a standard now, if ever, people are going to want to milk blu-ray for all it's worth, and after that many things might just be download to hard drive. Still, having an affordable disk that you can pass around is still useful, I don't know if it'll be an industry standard, and I'm sure someone like sony will eventually make their own version and brand it, or maybe they won't, but even if it isn't an industry standard, eventually burners will come out and you'll be able to go down to office max and pick up a stack of writables, that's still a LONG way off though.

Yes 3D IS happening, but let me stress that it has NOTHING to do with that format, you're just confusing the two.
