Thoughts on a couple site policies

After being very thankful to get some help in response to my post in Script Help and Language Discussion
I ran into one more little question and tacked it onto my original topic since it was related. The system auto squished my post last post in the topic which basically prevents other readers from seeing any evidence that the topic has new content (as far as I know).

The 7 day restriction seems a little like 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater'.  Were multiple posts really bothering people so much to justify such a severe cut and doesn't it encourage posting multiple topics instead of keeping it in one thread?

The second thing, I don't quite understand the policy to deny requests to delete submitted material. I doubt I would ever have a reason to want my material removed, but I don't plan on submitting any new material because I don't want to give up my right to choose. Are you sure that policy is helping more than it's hurting?

RHDN has maintained a good level of quality and intelligence compared to other sites (very good accomplishment) , but occasionally it seems to border on excessive tactics (flashback to auto-changing 'the scene').

The thread is marked as new, so everyone else will still be able to see that you've updated it. Having it enforced by the software allows moderators to spend their time on more important things.

I can't think of a valid reason either, but maybe the staff have seen some. Seems like people only demand to have all of their submissions removed when they have a meltdown and decide to cut ties with the community. Why indulge people who are lashing out (and probably not sticking around), to the detriment of the rest of the users?

Automerged posts prevent so many annoying things like wasted database space, people artificially inflating their post count, people bumping their theads (with what 99% of the time should have just been an edit of their last post anyway). The 7 day rule allows you to perform a bump if you think your thread was missed by the community. We actually did have complaints which is why the rule got put into effect in the first place. You'd be surprised what people complain about. People in general like to complain. Boy, do they like to complain.

Removing submitted material is a royal pain in the ass for the staff and the rule is in place primarily to prevent drama. E.g. person submits their document/util/hack/translation and then someone on the board or elsewhere pisses them off and they decide to take their ball and go home and ask for their material to be removed. The disclaimer on the front page doesn't specify, but we do make exceptions occasionally. Not too long ago a translation patch was removed at the request of the author after it became apparent that the game was being released commercially for example. The purpose of RHDN is to serve as the archive of the community. It is our intention to make sure that anything that is submitted doesn't disappear. If you submit something to the site, expect it to remain archived here until the site ceases to exist.
