Monkey-Moore - New relative search tool

As you can see, I did something more "intuitive" than value scan relative (although it will still be an option).
Anyway, I don't want to buzzkill the nicest feature of version 0.4, so you'll have to wait for details. 

That's awesome. No need to apologies for the delay, it's been 9 years since Translhextion was released and nobody else had managed to come up with a replacement in all that time, so 9 months is nothing. (If you need any help beta testing the new features, just shoot me a PM.) I'm looking forward to adding Monkey Moore to my default selection of ROM hacking tools.

I recall a guy on this board who made a topic about the ultimate hex editor or something in C#. Many great ideas were given. He supposedly had started, but then I never remember hearing from him again. So many failed projects in our community (reasons understandable being that this is a hobby). It's a shame nonetheless. We do end up using the same tools for a decade as a result.

My project is far more modest than Lleu's one. Soon you'll be proven wrong about it.

Alright folks, I've finished Monkey-Moore 0.4.

Here goes the list of new features:
- searches can now use Unicode
- value scan relative (like in Translhestion)
- searches using a user defined character set
- customizable options and settings
- config saving/loading

The most significant ones are (1) unicode support and (2) user defined character set.
Using this feature, you're able to tell MM the sequence in which the characters are stored in the rom, and use the difference between them to find what you're looking for.

Here goes a simple example. I picked up Hokuto no Ken 3 - Shin Seiki Souzou Seiken Restuden (J), and loaded it on FCEUXD:


Looking at the PPU Viewer, I found this:


Then I opened MM and typed the sequence found in the PPU Viewer right into the character set field. Then I searched for something shown in the first screenshot. That's what I got:


Pretty fancy, isn't it? You can do a lot of things with this feature, it's all up to you.
I'm writing an english documentation, and it'll be ready in the next few weeks (yes, weeks, I"m pretty busy right now).

This seems like a really great idea for a program. The next time I find myself wanting to relative search, I will definitely give it a try.

Have you given any thought into implementing a relative search for multi-byte characters (such as kanji, or 16x16 kana or something)?

For the time being, you can accomplish that with wildcards. They work fine when you define a custom charset too.
I'm planning to implement native support for 16-bit values, maybe in the next version, though.
