Hikaru no Go (GBA)

Now that I've got all my tools ready I might as well start a topic on this

I'm hacking Hikaru no Go for the GBA, it's a pretty easy game to hack and I've got a complete text dump bar some misc debug text that I don't think is used in the actual game.

The text dump is 311kb if anyone wants to take it up.

Here's some screens of the progress I've made:


As shown the game features a full HWF along with a standard full-width Kana and English set too. I've experimented with the name menu and 8 full characters can be used if it's edited to use the HWF characters instead - some limited ASM hacks will be needed but it'll be pretty simple to achieve.

There was an open source project translating this game a while back but the project is now afaik dead so I'm picking it up again, it was their project that inspired some of the methods I store my dumped data.

In the spirit of the open source project I've decided to release all of my tools and source code alongside the main script in case anyone wants to take a look, improve things or use the tools for their own games. Since this game was basically designed to be hacked my tools should work with any game featuring SJIS+Ascii text and standard GBA pointers.

Nice, I loved the anime. What kind of game is this exactly? Do you play a series of Go matches against an AI? I know that Go AI's are notoriously bad due to the complexity of the game, so I guess that's not it. How does the game work?

It basically allows you to play against popular characters from the show or go through a side story featuring the main characters. You face a game AI but I suck at Go so I always get beaten.

The story mode features a load of tutorials from Sai about how to play properly which is pretty cool, it's overall a nice game although I haven't gotten that far in it due to my lack of any kind of skill in Go.

You could use another Go program to win games.

The anime is one of my all time faves, it's a shame they didn't continue it through to where the manga finished. I might watch it again myself actually.

Hikaru no Go kind of reminds me of when the owner of a local (local to RIT, that is) anime import shop was reading Shion no Ō (which is similar, except it centers around EXTREME SHŌGI instead of EXTREME GO and it’s aimed at an older audience) in Japanese.

He kind of described reading it like this:
- plot, plot, plot
- bunch of Shōgi jargon he doesn’t understand because he doesn’t play
- more plot

I imagine translating Hikaru no Go could get to be the same way if you don’t know Go that well....

Yeah, which means unless I get someone that loves HnG as much as I do -and- knows fluent Japanese I'm gonna have to do a hell of a lot of editing

Oh, it is a pleasure to find this page. I've finding a translation of this game for several months. I was even trying to learn how to translate this game.

I have no idea of translating the game. However, I offer myself to do the translation into Spanish, once, it is done in english.

Althought I can understand english, I think this game is a useful tools for beginners in Go.

Please, let me know any advance and if I can help in something, please, tell, me.

I am looking forward to play this game understanding the explanations of Sai, Hikaru...

I have one question. I will try to translate the game. I think I have to modify the text dump changing the jap sentences by spanish sentences. After that I have to use one of your codes to introduce the new sentences into the room. However, shall i have care with the tranlations? -length and so on-.
