Help naming a gaming website?
« on: June 24, 2012, 01:29:17 pm »
Moulinoski and I are looking to start a gaming website, but we're stuck at the name part.

We're looking for something pretty catchy, but not too long. Something like "Blistered Thumbs", something that evokes the imagery of video-gaming without necessarily having the words "video games" (or one of the two words) in the title.

A few ideas we've run by so far:

- Backwards Compatible (deemed too long and perhaps hard to remember).
- The Daily Grind (domain name taken by domain squatters, so likely hard to buy the domain)
- Save 'n Continue

Even if you just like one of the old names, we'd really appreciate your input here.

Thanks a bunch,

~DS

What content will there be? The name shouldn't just be catchy, it should suggest the style of content.

Save n' Continue is the best of the bunch that's up there, imo.

There's going to be a lot. There'll be gaming reviews (both retro and modern), gaming news, and other columns for specific content (I'll be doing columns on game music and translations, for example).

I kinda agree with you on the content bit, but to look back at my example, Blistered Thumbs isn't specifically a bunch of fighting-game related material. It has that, but it has a lot more.

If the site mainly focused on translations then I'd suggest 'DISVALLEY.' Props to whoever knows where that came from.

How about 'SELECT START' ?

Wait a minute :-\
And I'll leave it at that!

How about 'SELECT START' ?
Sadly, insert.co.in was already tried and went nowhere and now someone is just sitting on the domain, it seems.

Most phrases that would be iconic to gamers on the whole have been taken for someone’s site somewhere or other.

Backward Compatible is pretty good, it makes me think of "retro games in a modern age". Not just necessarily crappy iOS and XBLA ports, but talking about old games from a 2012 perspective.

Select Start is a good name for a site about co-op games.

I'm going to be making a webcomic with the explicit intention of appealing to people on the internet and profiting from them. It's going to be called "The Paws Button" and it's going to have sexy animals playing games and talking about how they're men trapped in a woman's body (and vice versa). With the three webcomic tentpoles of video games, gender switching, and furries, it doesn't really matter how bad it is, it's still going to make a killing. You can't have "The Paws Button".

I just thought of one called Saveoholics. That's a pretty good one, it brings to mind those Sierra adventure games where you never know when you're going to die and thus erase hours of progress. World of Ruin is something else I just thought of, it makes me think of all those terrible YouTube reviews where people just yell.

More later.

Name it Grinder's Coffee.  This way you can open up a Starbucks at a later date.

edit: nvm, bought by squatters.

I place you can go get your coffee and talk about video games. HMM. SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN. Except for them squatters. What's their deal. I liked The Daily Grind. :/

Thank you all for your contributions. Please keep them coming. :)

Since The Daily Grind domains are taken, my girlfriend also suggested "Late Night Grind".

http://www.gamingasylum.com/

http://www.medinavillage.com/

http://www.shinkuhadoken.com/

Are three I've found that aren't taken...
The first one includes the word "gaming", which is something I wanted to avoid. The other two are likely to get us sued by Square-Enix and Capcom, respectively. XD

Picky, picky picky!!

http://www.buttonpushingoverlord.com/

http://www.missilepack.com/

http://www.videogameographer.com/

Are three more.

EDIT: And what about www.shoryuken.com? I don't see them getting any C&D letters...

EDIT 2: http://www.blackrosestreet.com/ isn't taken. Unless, of course, you're worried about GameArts suing you.
