Programs for organizing my MP3 filenames and ID3 tags?

I've gotten many an .mp3 over the years, and having just moved over to the new computer, I want to keep everything as organized as possible (we'll see how long that lasts).

I tend to want my song filenames to be in a particular fashion (Artist - Songname.mp3), and for my ID3 tags to show the same information as the filename. Is there any sort of program out there that will do these sorts of things for me? I'd hate to have to go through them one-by-one and rename them (like I once did to my NES/SNES ROMs, for example).

I've been using it for years, it's the best I know. You can just batch rename everything in the fashion you describe. And you can fill in blanks using online databases and such. (though in my experience, they tend to be horribly incomplete, and the stored genre information can usually be deleted immediately, it's just bullshit more often than not)

I've been meaning to poke into this repeatedly over the years, but never got around to it.  Hardly seems worth it anymore.

I think I was poking at The Godfather most recently, last time.

Is Musicbrainz any good?  I think I was about to unleash that on my library, but I kept hesitating because I wanted something that would backup all my existing tags first, just in case.  (mp3tag does that, right?)

Personally, I use the Musicbrainz Picard Tagger.

I use Tag&Rename, mp3tag, and Magic File Renamer.

Tag&Rename is VERY VERY GOOD

However, sometimes I need to use mp3tag and MFR to do certain things.

Foobar2K is the best at this.

Unless you want to imbed or get rid of embedded album artwork. I think there might be an extension for it, but mp3tag really is where it's at. More than anything, batch -renaming- has been an incredible boon, since I'm extremely anal about how my library is organized.

So, as per my earlier question: do any of these programs let you back up your original tags and filenames to permit easy restoration later?

beets can maintain the corrected tags internally rather than writing them to file, in which case you'd probably access them with something like an mpd client via its bpd plugin.

Back on XP I used to use something called AudioShell, it added a tab in the properties section (when you right click an mp3 file) and from there you could add an album cover, edit date and song titles etc. But it doesn't have a counterpart for Win7 as far as I know, so I movrd on to Tag & Rename. It's not quite as convenient since it it's just a standalone program, but it works and that's all that matters.
