Translations: Konami's Cave Noire, Presented by Aeon Genesis

After a long 5-6 weeks, 4-5 weeks longer than hoped for or expected, Aeon Genesis has released a translation for Konami's highly-distilled gameboy roguelike, "Cave Noire." Dodge monsters, rescue fairies, collect inventory-cramping orbs and get rich while plundering brief dungeons! Cave Noire gets very tough, very quickly.

The translation is complete, so enjoy!

If it does get that hard later on, at least it saves what progress you do make, as far as finishing quests goes, so you can keep on trying where you failed.

Do you permanently improve stats in any way, or is it always reset to the default for each quest?

It resets to default... sort of. The default for higher level quests tends to be higher than the default for earlier quests. And yeah, you start over on the quest you failed; it doesn't erase your total progress. That would just be evil.

Something that'll help to know: If you complete a quest, the door will appear somewhere on floor you're already on.

Doors actually appear on every floor once you've hit your quota for any given quest, so if you miss the door (or if you can't get to it) there'll always be another. But you generally don't want to get to the bottom floor of any given dungeon though; they tend to be filled with high-level 2x2 enemies (like dragons.)

Is there a bottom floor, or do they just keep going?  I got pretty deep on the level M monster slaying mission, but just left sometime after maxing out kills at 99 and getting like 22 floors deep.  It looked like it'd just keep going to 99 floors, and even then it might just start repeating at floor 99.

It does bottom out eventually, but at a different (lower) floor for each quest level.

This is an awesome time waster.  It reminds of an old Desktop Adventure game.

I've only noticed one problem so far.  When I first start, the initial name is all garbage.  After I change it, it displays fine.

The same thing happened to me. It has nothing to do with the patch, you need to delete that save file the emulator uses.

It's caused by having a save file initialized by the Japanese version of the game. Easy fixes include either making sure there's no save file when starting the English version, or simply renaming your character in the options menu after loading.

This is what I love about the ROM hacking/translating scene, it drags up hidden gems like this. Thanks a lot for shining a light (and translating!) on this game, it's quite enjoyable.
