Okay, damn it, I'll bite. Here are some truly excellent FPS games from that era (well some are older), that no one has mentioned yet I think:
Soldier Of Fortune-Fantastic gunplay, brutal violence to the max, great story and overall just awesome. One of the top 3 FPS games ever made in my book. Get the Gold version if you can. The PS2 version of this is ass, anybody who's interested play the PC version. The sequels aren't so great either, stick with the original.
Gunman Chronicles-The story is hokey, cowboys and dinosaurs in space, yeah. Forget the story. The sci-fi action is fantastic, and being able to design your own weapons is a hoot. Add in the SHODAN-esque friend/enemy and things get really fun. I had a blast with this game back in the day. It's underrated to say the least.
Star Trek Elite Force 1 & 2-Probably the only Star Trek games I've played that didn't suck. If you enjoy the series, and you enjoy FPS games, you absolutely MUST play these titles.
Medal Of Honor Allied Assault-I have played bajillions of WWII FPS games. This is the best one, by far. A ton of fun.
Kingpin Life Of Crime-You want to be a badass amongst a sea of badasses? You want to have a conversation with some thug, cuss him out, and then beat his face in with a baseball bat? Or a flamethrower? This isn't the most complex FPS ever made, but it nails its subject matter perfectly.
Postal 2-If for some reason your violent urges can't be satisfied by
Soldier Of Fortune or
Kingpin, well
Postal 2 is the absolute ultimate id appeasing murder simulator ever made. It's also often hilarious.
Half-Life-The original
Half-Life plus its two expansions, is a much better game than its sequel. Yeah, I said that. And I mean it. If you don't know what this is, then get it right now. You are about to have way too much fun for you own good.
Thief The Dark Project-This is technically a first person shooter, in that you see the game in first person, and you can shoot arrows. But it's not an adrenalin fest. It's a game which requires cunning, sneaking, and true courage. It's also my most favorite game ever made.
Clive Barker's Undying-A horror game with plenty of shooting, and plenty of dying. This game is hard as hell, but the atmosphere makes it worth the effort.
Strife-If you like post apocalyptic sci-fi stuff, this oldie but goodie is still worth your time. It has a conversation system, and limited RPG elements. I consider it one of the original FPS/RPG hybrids. Just use DOSBox and you'll be fine. If you enjoy
Strife be sure to try
Cybermage and the original
System Shock.
Also, I should point out, everybody keeps telling you to play
Vampire: The Masquerade, but they are forgetting to point out which one. They don't mean the original
Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption, they actually mean
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
Bloodlines is indeed a truly stupendous FPS/RPG game. But only if you install the latest community patch. Otherwise it's a pile of piss poor boiling bugs.
I could name a lot more, but I'll stop now. I've played as many FPS games as the average person around here has played JRPGs.
