Great, now everyone is pointing at me

I will defy expectations by saying:

Ah well, it's too nice of a series to not say anything about it.
Like Dank said, Gothic 1 is decent but a bit dated, while Gothic 2 is the series' crown jewel. Definitely get the add-on Night of the Raven too, Gothic 2 isn't the same without it. If you need more incentive, it contains pirates! ARRRRRRRRRRR
Gothic 3 is in my opinion a failure of a game, but most Gothic fans love it too after it got patched up by the community. So definitely get the community patch, which makes it mostly bug free. I think the game's core design is broken beyond bug fixing, but again, not too many people I know agree with me on that.
Whatever you do, do not even consider getting the Gothic 3 (IIRC stand-alone) expansion. It wasn't made by Piranha Bytes it was outsourced to some Indian studio that only did advertising racing games beforehand. If that already gives you a rough idea on how bad it is... trust me it's much much worse. A trillion bugs? Check. Complete disregard for story and character canon? Check. Horrible quest design? Check. Logical errors at every corner? You got it.
Piranha Bytes got the hell out under the thumbs of the publisher Jowood as soon as they could and created Risen. After overextending themselves with Gothic 3 they learned from their mistakes and made the game much smaller and less ambitious again. It might as well be called Gothic 4, since the gameplay and athmosphere is Gothic down to a T. The dungeons get a bit repetitive and boring, but otherwise it's as good as the Gothic titles. (And the dungeons only make up about 30% of the whole game or so)
Jowood still had the franchise rights and published a Gothic 4 too. At least they didn't have it made in India, but by another German studio. It was done by Spellbound, who did the Commandos clone Desperados beforehand. I don't blame them for what happened with Gothic 4. I have absolutely no doubt that executive meddling from Jowood ruined that one. Those retards wanted the game to be more successful on the American market, which meant making it more colorful (LOOL) and simpler. And oh boy, did they succeed. It's dumbed down to hell and back. The game passes as an average adventure game now, but it's hard to call it an RPG or even a Gothic game. It's extremely linear (think FFXIII linear), with little side-content at all and very combat heavy. So you basically have an action adventure where you fight yourself through a series of dungeons. I really don't know what this is supposed to have to do with Gothic, which was all about exploration and open world roleplaying. The story is taking place after the butchered Gothic 3 expansion and continues the canon rape in the way they had started there.
Now stop trying to use a controller or I'll find out where you live and break your knees.
