Dear Instant Ramen

Without you I would have starved to death by now. You kept me alive when I was a university student, and you continue to cure my hangovers to this very day.

I love you instant ramen

Sincerely

Geishaboy

EDIT: Oh yeah, talk about instant ramen or whatever

I always wondered if people actually think that that stuff tastes good or if they just watched so much anime that they were brainwashed to think so. Can't stand the stuff :-\ I'll rather heat some sausages or order a pizza if I'm too lazy to cook properly.

Maybe things are different over there, but the main thing is that they're not horrible, and they're ridiculously cheap. You can feed yourself on them for about a month for less than $5. As such they're quite popular among college students.

Of course, they're absolutely horrible for you. No real nutritional value, full of salt and saturated fat.

I really like the stuff, but the Maruchan ones I always used to get (Just add boiling water ) are like crazily bad for you. Still, they taste awesome, I'm just careful not to buy them in bulk, otherwise I'd probably live off the stuff and end up unable to fit through any reasonable exits from my room.

The ones that come with three packets of toppings+flavours (usually ones from the Philippines, etc) I find to be the best, since they taste more like actual noodles than wet cardboard with salt flavouring :P I doubt I could live off of them though, I'd be suicidal by the second day in.

See, I'm kinda mixed here. I love them *and* hate them. I hate eating the ones you can get in the US by themselves.

Living with my girlfriend's family has taught me that you should almost always add stuff to ramen. Then it's delicious. And we don't eat US packaged ramen here, either. It's usually Korean or Chinese ramen.

And I love Japanese ramen. That stuff is much higher quality than the stuff we get in the US, and you can almost never find the simple ramen wrapped in plastic. It's almost always in a cup that you eat the ramen out of, and almost all ramen has other ingredients in it, and the noodles always seem fresher.

Really? Just about any national supermarket chain should have have them. I mean, maybe not imports, but definitely the simple single packs. There's like 5 places within reasonable driving distance of where I live that they can be bought in bulk, no less.

I meant in Japan. I very rarely saw the single ramen things wrapped in plastic. I think I saw, once or twice, a few of them in bulk packaging. But most Japanese people prefer the kind that comes in it's own bowl.

Or they just buy the noodles by itself, and make a custom soup to go with it from scratch.

Are these any good? I remember seeing them before at a supermarket, but just sorta passed right over them.

I once ate Maruchan ramen cakes raw with peanut butter on top because you guessed it, there was nothing else to eat.

Not a fan. It can be good if it's made up really nice with a bunch of meat and vegetables mixed into the noodles and topped off with teriyaki sauce or whatever, but otherwise I find it incredibly bland and artificial tasting. I eat it maybe twice a year, maximum.

But don't mind me, keep on keeping on. I have a bunch sitting on my shelf any of you can have for free haha.
The harder companies try to lock their products down, the more likely they are to test the limits of legitimate customers who look on enviously as the pirates enjoy a superior user experience.

That's odd, I have no trouble finding individually wrapped instant ramen. You can get them at supermarkets mostly, but also convinience stores and the like. Making a comeback maybe.

And it’s easier to add the extra goodness that way, since pots have room for it.

Most of the instant ramen consumed in my house is actually instant ramyeon. Same thing, different language.

Apparently the Korean side of my family went bankrupt heavily investing in it... just a couple years before it took off. Unfortunate, but it was a contributing factor to my corporeal existence.

If you're broke and have few other options, you can do a lot worse.

But I pretty much never eat them in the rainy season.
