ROM Hacks: You now prossess Simon's Quest: Redacted.
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:56:33 pm »

Update By: Spooniest

Mentioned in egoraptor's first Sequelitis episode, this hack, done by The Almighty Guru, streamlines Simon's Quest by speeding up text crawling, rewriting townfolk dialog, and there are a couple other surprises too. If you're still riding the fence on Simon's Quest, you can try this hack. Enjoy Simon's Quest the way it was meant to be played!

Never tried the Original Castlevania 2. Mostly because It didnt get my interest at all. I might give this a try, if the original game is really that... bad? Unfair? I don't really know.

Mostly it was just poorly planned. The Japan version might've had useful things in the town dialog; I'm not sure, I don't know Japanese. The Western release was a translation train wreck. At least if someone's a first timer, they'll have some clues strewn about that make sense.

It was that way in the Japanese too. The developer is on record as saying that the townspeople often lied to you in an effort to trick you. Yeah, the translation could probably be better. But so could the translation of just about any NES game. Most of the confusing dialogue was already there, IIRC.

So yeah I finished the game...
But to be honnest there is nothing really impressive. Someone could probably finish the game without using a walktrough now that there are people that tells you how to kneel near the lack with a crystal equipped etc...

But I can't put myself in the skin of someone who doesn't already knowns all this stuff after finishing the game multiple times so I don't know if it's actually "possible" to finish the game without other clues than the ones present in the game.

I guess there is still nothing that tells you how to use the "oak stake" properly, nor does anyone says where exactly (2 places) to use garlic to summon the strange man, and you have to find the clues in book without knowing their location which can only be done by equipping dracula's eye, which means you're shield-less (and you don't get the eye before the 3rd mansion so you have already done most of the game at this point).

Yeah, it's still not the overwhelmingly cathartic experience that Castlevania 1 offers, and it probably never will be. But I always like to remember what Mei Ling said in one of her quotes.

Quote
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying.
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying.

...Which she follows up with a bit of advice: "Be happy that you have the time to play a game."
