Interesting. I'm pretty much the opposite, because if I'm going to depend on some kind of benevolence, I want it to be decentralized. Too much power in the hands of the few corrupts too easily.

And you're right, too much power in the hands of big insurance has indeed created massive corruption, but because there is profit motive driving costs up, rather than down. The way in which other countries keep costs low for healthcare is that there is a certain bar is set for a standard of health care and companies compete to create that level of healthcare. This drives costs down, rather than up (because you are competing for government contracts, you have to be both lean and effective).
