My girlfriend and I are in a civil union; we have been together for 8 ½ years.

It's when a couple lives together for seven years. They get similar benefits to those that married couples get.

I think you're thinking of common-law marriage, DS. Common-law is where you live together for a certain period of time and get the benefits of married couples. Civil unions require a trip to the courthouse.

Of course, I think this may differ by state. I know here in Texas we mainly have common-law marriage.

Eien Ni Hen is right, although we did not actually had to make a trip to the courthouse. Legally and paperwork-wise, it's pretty similar to a marriage. There are some differences here and there (again, depending on the state/province, I guess), and some countries don't recognize it as a legal union.

Then what would be the difference between getting a Civil Union and getting married? Obviously I understand that Civil Unions are an alternative to marriage for same-sex couples in certain states (since most states are assholes and won't allow same-sex marriage). But I meant for heterosexual couples. Are there any differences (the wiki article wasn't very detailed)?

The first thing I thought was juef was a lady, hence the Civil Union.

It was already stated, but it varies a lot all over the world and especially in the states here. I think I remember reading awhile ago that in one of the states, a Civil union was allowed but they didn't really gain any benefits like marriage did. There was also some laws about how if one partner was in the hospital for something, the other was not allowed to visit due to it being a same-sex thing.

It gets pretty whacky on laws when it comes to anything remotely around same-sex couples. "Good" 'ole USA.
