Maka Maka Items
« on: April 29, 2011, 02:16:31 pm »
I'm wondering if I should change a few items, after I got around to scanning my manual for this game.
Perhaps ヤクブツ from "Medicine" to Drugs?
Thus could change くすり from Herb to Medicine (it looks like a Y-shaped capsule in the manual).
びんびんだま ("Bin Bin Ball") looks like a bottle of pills.
せきどめ (Lozenge) looks more like a cigarette, although it is described as curing a cold, I think.
くさや ("Grass") looks like a couple dead fish on a string. Makes sense, since I think the description is prevents enemy encounters.
メモちょう ("Memo sign" looks like a bird-shaped memo pad)
すいはんジャー ("Jar of Acid") looks like a mini-robot (sorta R2-D2). Apparently the use is to recover the party's HP)
こたつ ("Heater") is a heated table, functions the same as an Inn. I guess it's a portable heated table. Heater doesn't make much sense without description. Heated Table. I wonder if it'd be better to just localize this and change the name and to something like Hot Dinner?

Items page scan
Any input?

I haven't played this game so I dunno the context or anything (other than that it's a REALLY weird game), but here are my quick thoughts:

1. for yakubutsu, I would've gone with "Drugs" to begin with probably
2. Sekidome is what I'd call "cough medicine", so I guess go with whatever the icon suggests?
3. Kusaya isn't grass, it's actually a horribly stinky fish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusaya
4. Memochou is definitely just a memo book/memo pad/memo
5. Suihanjaa is what we would call a rice cooker

Not sure what binbindama is/does, though.

びんびんだま looks like extra strength Viagra.

Heated table could be changed to something like Coleman stove or sleeping bag, but then you would probably need to edit the item graphics. Is that ok to do in a proper translation?

びんびんだま ("Bin Bin Ball") looks like a bottle of pills.

Have you considered that the name of the item might be referring to the actual pills and not the bottle?

びんびん is onomatopoeic (dictionary says 1. blaring; loud so as to grate on or exhaust the ears. 2. Strongly resonating in the heart/mind. BUT it can also refer to a certain string-plucking technique in music... and... well, it shows up in pr0n in addition to all these more innocent definitions, use your imagination).

だま means pills here in this case. Pills in TCM are these irregularly sized small balls and you have to take a specific number for consistent dosing. The description in the scan mentions that they “smell sort of bad”, which TCM pills generally do.

It removes the “groggy” status, according to Japanese WP. Safest translation is going to be something like “energy pills”.

Also, the cough medicine looking vaguely like a cigarette is baffling, but apparently they actually have that in Japan. OTOH, this one looks more like a candy cigarette, which the real thing isn’t.
