Deep Dungeon IV
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:44:30 am »
Anybody want to translate the intro?

The author of the Dragoon-X translation requested it moved from "Complete" to "Dead" a couple years ago, due to glitches (sucks for whoever had a repro built :P )
So odino translated the scripts shortly after. Just now I decided to get some serious hacking work done. This is being entirely re-hacked from scratched.

Probably have more questions once I get the major dialogue block done. I think there's a few lines that seem to have been incomplete translations, or odino translated with space limits in mind.
Though I added DTE and dictionary and it's so far working pretty well (I had to move the location of the few RAM bytes I needed once I found this seemingly huge amount of empty SRAM space wasn't empty).

One other question I had: and enemy called He had it as Disembodied soul. Any ideas for a shorter name? It's beyond my limit of 10 bytes and 15 characters (after DTE is applied). I tried Floating soul, but it still glitches (will figure out why later). It's a flying eyeball/spirit monster.

I will edit, add, and modify as time allows.

20 years ago, the kingdom of Loram
erupted into war.
A Great Devil and his goblin hordes attacked their cities and villages.

The kingdom's army fought furiously with the goblin hordes.
The troops weakened in the furious onslaught...

Suddenly three adventurers: a mysterious soldier, a magician,
and a monk  stormed the evil stronghold and defeated the Great Devil.
Since then they were called the three heroes....

Now one  of the three heroes,  the soldier Frederick,
was cruelly murdered with great malice.

But the townspeople paid no heed to this
tragedy, and did not understand the significance.

A lone knight came forth
to avenge his father's murder.

Here are some various names I can think of that are shorter than "Floating Soul":
Spirit Flame or Will-O-Wisp or Human Soul.

If it's an eye monster, ひとだま is probably literally "single eye" (一玉: from 一つ and 目玉), rather than 人魂.  You could give it an "eye" name.

Here's the intro:

Quote
20 years ago, the kingdom of Loram was thrown into war.  A Demon King and his army of monsters invaded Loram's towns and villages, killing many.

The kingdom's armies fought valiantly but were unable to slow the monsters' advance.

Then three unknown adventurers, a soldier, a mage and a priest infiltrated the Demon King's stronghold and slayed him.  Since that day, they have been known as the "Three Heroes".

Now one of the Three Heroes, Fred the Soldier, has been brutally murdered.  His death was horrible, clearly an act of intense hatred.

But the people paid it no mind.  It had nothing to do with them, they thought.  They didn't realize the true meaning behind the murder...

But one man did set forth, a knight.  He vowed to hunt down the killer, and avenge the death of his father.

No joke, it says "Fred the Soldier" :).

I translated 魔王 as "Demon King" and 魔物 as "monsters", but you could replace those words if you want.  snark's "Great Devil" and "goblins" would be just fine too.

Edit:  +1 for Flyclops.  That's hilarious :)

Super massive bump.
But I started to work on this again.
Got this line here.

(string2) entered a shack. An old wizard appeared and claimed to be Caleph.

<END>
<END>
So you are Fredericks's son...Fred was murdered?! No...Surely you must meet my servant.

Doesn't quite make sense in context.
I go to Caleph's house (or maybe I'll have to change it to Calef, will need to check if I can exceed the original five-letter names), then he joins me.

Unless his "servant" is this dragon I passed by on the way to his shack, and thinks I'm shitting him that I'm the son of the legendary hero guy (named Fred) so he's trying to kill me. :P
I think Caleph is the beared old guy in the pic, and he does have this servant/assistant next to him named Saito.

Instead of "shack" I would use "shanty" or something if you need space. It literally says it's a "shabby/seedy hut".

"(String2) entered an old, seedy-looking hut. When he did, an old wizard appeared and said his name was Caleph."

Second one's more off:

"You're Fred's son, huh? What? You say Fred was murdered!? I don't believe it. The guy who did it must've been considerably strong. That does it. I have to go with you."

The last word is 行かねばなるまい. He's speaking fancy Japanese for "to go".

"(String2) entered an old, seedy-looking hut. When he did, an old wizard appeared and said his name was Caleph."

I'd probably use the instead of a(n) when referring to the hut, since the hut's existence has already been established in the context.

"When (String2) entered the shabby-looking hut, an elderly wizard appeared and introduced himself as Caleph."

So, Sumika is a shabby hut? I guess "Caleph's shanty" would fit as the location name, I have a 17-character screen space limit.

DS' line definitely makes more since as after the second line, I automatically leave Caleph's house with him in the party.

住家 is just the kanji for "to live at/in" and "house" put together. It means "dwelling". It's probably meant to be ambiguous since you get there not knowing who Caleph is, I assume. And it's probably not important to the story itself.

Just wanted to check these. Want to see if I'm missing anything, particularly about this secret place. Probably not. I notice the third and fourth floors of Kalim Tower are suspiciously smaller than the first two.

(string2) opens the door. He sees a weakened Erick inside. Erick was stunned. Seeing Caleph's form, he spoke...

<END>
Erick: Once...before we defeated Cymer... Revived. He told me to become a follower.

<END>
But I refused, and he locked me up here. By the way, I heard there is a hidden passage in this tower.

There is a guy named Erik on the 3rd Floor.

"When (string2) and group opened the door, they saw a weakened Erick inside. Erick was surprised, but when he saw Caleph, he began to slowly speak."

Erick: "Cymer, whom we were supposed to have defeated long ago, has risen once again. And of all things, he demanded I be his underling."

"But when I refused, he locked me up in here. By the way, there's supposed to be a secret passage somewhere in this tower..."

"I overheard some people saying that there is a monk named Erick on the east bridge on the 3rd floor."

That's the idea I thought to, although there doesn't seem to be a bridge on the third floor.
What happens on the third floor is there is this tile with "paralysis gas" that paralyzes the second party member and behind it is a locked door (which can be opened with a key found after defeating the boss), and behind that is another room with Erick. Unless the player is supposed to use their imagination and ignore the lack of a tileset change. :D

Which brings me to another question.
though typically translated as "[STRING2] awoke." I'm wondering if I should change it to "[STRING2] opened their eyes." This seems to be the string used when both Sleep and Paralysis are cured.
(paralysis in this game seems to work like petrification in other RPGs, essentially death but without reaching zero HP.)

I'm still quite a ways off, but might as well post the ending text from the ROM.

And then probably followed by some English credits I found afterwards.

Then it's probably 東の端にいる, meaning "he's at the eastern end".

目を覚ます can also mean "to come to one's senses".

"With the Dark Lord Cymer defeated, you have finally lived up to your father's name (*not entirely sure what うつこ means, so this part after the comma is a guess).
Even though the journey itself was harsh, now that you know it's over, it feels somewhat nostalgic.

And you remembered all of the people that you've met on the way."
