Spelling correction of the word "Assohles", I fixed the typo and changed it to "Assholes". I also capitalized the words "French", and "English" in the description section. I got the following errors when I attempted to submit my corrections so I had to download, resize, and upload/change the images as well: 1. EFF's Patent Busters Take Aim at Nintendo's Handheld Emulation Patent

25 February 2008 8:56AM EST - Update by Karatorian

Other News

As part of it’s ongoing Patent Busting program targeting bogus patents, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a leading organization “defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights”, has included a patent held by Nintendo that covers the emulation of handheld gaming devices in it’s Top Ten Most Wanted list.

The patent is clearly aimed at restricting the development of emulators and related tools for handheld consoles, of which Nintendo’s Gameboy brand has the majority market share. This patent could have dire implications for the ROM hacking community as such software is of vital importance to the hacking of titles on these systems.

The EFF is seeking community contributions of prior art from before the May 27, 1999 filing date of the patent. Anyone with information regarding handheld emulation prior to this date can submit it to the EFF using a form at their website.

The EFF has been successful in overturning other bogus patents and is in the process of legal proceedings aimed at overturning more.

11 February 2008 10:10AM EST - Update by KaioShin

Translations News

mirror moon and Soylations released a complete English translation of the SRPG/Visual Novel Utawarerumono. Here is the original release notice:

Utawarerumono translation patch has been released!

While I consider this an open beta release because it did not undergo the same level of internal proofing as our other releases, please play and enjoy it to the fullest!

The release is currently compatible with the PC DVD version.

There was already an update to patch 1.1, which fixes some small errors caused by an old line inserter.

Staff Note: We can’t host the patch here on RHDN, if you’d like to play the game, head over to the mirror moon website. They also list sources where you can buy the game from.

Lode Funner is a level editor for the NES version of the classic Lode Runner. Features include the following:

  • Easy click-and-drag interface
  • No hardcoded offsets (makes editor very flexible)
  • Includes tool for expanding ROM (allowing for more space for levels)

Emerald Dragon now playable in English

03 February 2008 10:24AM EST - Update by KingMike

Translations News

After five years of work, Nightcrawler has released his English translation patch for the SFC/SNES version of Emerald Dragon.

With this release, Nightcrawler has released a patching program for Windows, designed for beginners to translation patches. (Advanced users may still apply the IPS with their program of choice.) He’d really like it if you read the readme, too.

Nightcrawler will be taking a bit of break before he returns to finish up Heracles 4, Tenshi no Uta (SNES) and any secrets he’s working on.

Blue Monkey Theme Added

29 January 2008 7:06PM EST - Update by Nightcrawler

Site News

A new theme was added to the site entitled Blue Monkey. This theme was based on a concept Demi had for another site which inspired me to do an adaptation for our site. Thanks goes to Kiyoshi Aman for creating some new graphics since we didn’t have permission to use the ones from the original concept design. Thanks also to Killa B and Spikeman for some assistance with other aspects of the adaptation. I think it came out looking pretty nice. :)

For those of you that may be clueless, ROMhacking.net is available in 9 different themes, which are selectable right here on the main page via the drop down box! It still amazes me how many people come here and don’t know these features exist. So, feel free to try it out. To anybody who may have their own better ideas of how the site should look, perhaps you might be interested in making your own theme?

Note: BlueMonkey utilizes PNG files w/ transparency, which means IE6 and prior will choke on it.
